Now why did they leave? What drove those people in a city the size of Toronto at the time to move North further from the city?

In all honesty the current situation of Detroit (in my opinon) is a result of a large number of factors......corporate greed (at the top), anti union sentiment, big three mismanagement, NAFTA, some geographic factors involving shipping/rail, municipal corruption, consumers wanting cheapest product regardless of global consequences (insert Walmart here).....feel free to add. Detroit isn't unique....but it is perhaps a prime example of the manufacturing industry in the more developed world.
None of them have to do with the % of whites or blacks or hispanics or any other population......the rise and fall of the population percentages WASN'T the cause as some have suggested.

You have valid points, but your assessment is misleading by omission. And your perspective is not as unique as you make it out to be. There are other people on the board who are more than familiar with the Death Star size Margaritas at at Xochimilco's......and the areas surrounding it.

I bet feminist have already harassed and labelled the poor guy to death already. He makes some valid points which are based on societal norms.

I know a lot of women that make more than their male counterparts, but they work 'like men'. I.e. career first, little to no family, second. or third. or fourth on the list. It's just the way it is.

Until they wake up one day wondering what happened. Their kids ignore them, they end up divorced and "haggard like" then they turn harder and crustier or maybe the boil a bunny type :)

Poor city planning. Lots of highways, cheap, spacious lots in the burbs, and no urban scene of any value. Happened to dozens of US cities between the 50s and the 90s, and it's a natural consequence of their free market, small government mindset.
 
Anyone catch last week episode of Top Gear in Spain? They point out their ecnomic collapse as well. Pretty scary.

Any country run by former GoldMan Sachs employees always fail. USA, UK and Japan are failed countries. We just don't see it yet since we can print our way out of trouble. The debt has become so large now that the USA cannot even go to war with IRAN.
