Daily sports car?

I would disagree look for one that is old enough that values have bottomed and are rising so there is no depreciation. A 4th gen f body should fit that bill. A almost new mustang will depreciate like a rock a fox body no so much.

Although I 100% agree with your logic, it has to be wife-friendly to drive. I’ve come close to buying a Fox-body a dozen times (even this past June the guy sealing my driveway mentioned he has a Fox-body at home he’s not ready to sell but may soon so he knows to call me when that day comes). If I buy one it’ll be a supercharged Coyote in it and be silly (ie. not wife-friendly).
Honestly I’d prefer to get a Viper and make money off it if ever I did sell it but again not wife-friendly.
 
There are some good, and not so expensive fixes for the IMS issue. The best one absolutely bathes that bearing set in high pressure oil. It's unfortunate that this issue has been a problem. Fortunately I have a 9A1 which is an evolved Mezger motor, and it will survive just about anything short of an atomic bomb. 1200hp+ builds exist on the stock longblock, which is probably stupid, but it's impressive.
 
I wont argue. I've been lucky. With over 75000kms owning two of them I had to have a AC hose replaced 2 summers ago. $1600. Thats it. 981's are incredibly reliable.
But yes parts are an eye watering price. I know someone that had to replace both headlight assemblies on a MY2000 Boxster. About $2500 each.

As much as I admire them, owning a Porsche is not for the faint of heart.

Viper is probably closer to double your budget of 25k as a minimum. Very wife unfriendly, but it is a car that I dream to be able to afford it one day.

For now….its all just a dream.

Reliability is easier to achieve when limits aren't pushed. I've owned a few Hondas (CRV, Civic and a Prelude) and my wife drives a Lexus. They are fine for what they are but are not special at anything and thats ok. I'm not knocking them at all.

Oh I know. If I saw a clean one for $25k (or even $50k) it would be in my garage that day. Just spit-balling cars that I want that are appreciating.

I've driven a couple of Fox Mustangs and ... I don't get it. They drive like old cars.

I've driven a S197, and that one was a lot better.
 
Sports cars should tick boxes for their owner. For me it’s fun driving around town and a bit of weekend touring. I don’t care having a race track ready car for the street.

I have had a few that were my daily drivers, that never worked well for me. Right now I have a 69 Spitfire. Under1500 lbs, 90hp 4 banger with a 4 speed gear box. I love driving the thing.

I have my eye on a late 90s Jaguar XJS convertible, found a single owner V12 with 66000km that I’m mulling over. Ive always wanted a Jag convertible.
 
If you want a proper modern sports car on the cheap (ish), you can't beat the BRZ/FR-S/86. I bought a BRZ as my winter car, it's stupidly fun, easy to get sideways at pretty much any speed you'd like, but not in a scary code-brown way. Clutch is short and light, shifter is almost Honda-like, steering is surprisingly good for an electric rack. Driving position is PERFECT. Only problem for old boys is the car is almost stupidly low even stock, and getting in/out as a 40-something is not that fun often.

I don't see an issue getting in and out of a low car, that's just technique -- own one and you'll figure it out.

I'm sure the BRZ/FR-S/MX5 are fun, but to me, they are the motorcycle equivalent of a CB300R or R3 -- an inexpensive beginner's sports car designed to be a daily driver. Plus, If I owned one I'd be crushed knowing or watching a Hyundai Elantra N embarrass me.

I'm old school on sports cars, They don't need to be expensive or outrageously powerful -- I like iconic styling and a fun driving experience. Cars designed for 20-somethings, fart-can tuners, or doctor's wives ... not for me.

FYI I'm not parked on much of an angle in this shot, the rear is a pretty good amount wider than the front. As for power, I find that nearly 700hp is a nice way to cruise through rural traffic with authority. I get people aggro about getting passed, though .. I find that strange.

Looks really small and low. Probably seems to come out of nowhere like motorcycles, and startles those being passed.
