Covid booster

I could not do it . There’s a reason my wife specialized in paediatrics .

Barring supply problems my appointment has been moved forward a few days with the combo being Pfizer, Pfizer Moderna.

I'm keeping the January slot open until the earlier jab is in my arm. Sadly that skews the line up confusion but this whole thing was born and reared in confusion. I can't help but wonder if there aren't more people on lists than the entire population of the province.

I have two appointments and am also on one waiting list. I suspect there are many similar or worse at taking dibs on spots. Mistrust of the systems has become as big a problem as the virus itself.

Once the wave begins to subside there will be jabs looking for arms and free pizzas for showing up.

Until wave five............

Apparently, signing up for an earlier appointment cancels the later one automatically. Given the crapshow that is bookings, I suspect this only applies to multiple appointments booked through the provincial system. I have zero faith that there is a decent link to the pharmacies.

The later date is through the province, the earlier date through a clinic and the waiting list is with the local drug store.

If anyone is working with the provincial system I highly recommend wearing a full face helmet so when you resort to banging your head against the wall in frustration it won't hurt as much.

FWIW I got through the provincial system by phoning on a Sunday just after noon.

I gave up. Pharmacy for us.
 
I'm officially boosted. Very slight headache is only thing going so far, but that could be due to the half a carafe of coffee I've consumed this morning, and a late breakfast.

I look forward to being the only person at work in about 2 weeks LOL.

Is your wage related to the number of people available? It would make sense that as availability drops, cost to shipper increases and hopefully some of that gets passed to the drivers.
 
Just curious how many "boosters" or shots are you all willing to take?
In Israel they are on their 4th, there is some talk of it going to 8.
Not trying to stir any controversies or anything.
I hope it doesn't go that far, but the way things have been going....

From what I am reading, they are trying to gauge Omicron's severity. Many reports are saying this might the Coronavirus' "last gasp" as it mutates to a form that is less lethal and becomes endemic as opposed to a pandemic, ie. becomes something we live with every season, like the common flu.

Based on what the hospitalization rates and new data will reveal, measures like social distancing, masking, travel restrictions and indoors gatherings may all change. My thoughts on boosters will also depend on what they find. If it's bad, I'll take it, but I'm not happy with the ongoing program of mandatory boosters to combat every next strain: Echo, Nu, Sigma, Zeta, etc.

It's an interesting question and I suspect the right answer does not have a number attached. For instance, how many flu shots are you willing to take? For most people, that's as required (one a year with current science). It is worth looking into the science each round to see if science supports your decision instead of politics or fear.

They are only doing 4 in certain high risk populations and it’s a small control group right now. If you look at the vaccine schedules I’ve posted before they also have extra shots for those deemed at risk for various diseases. What you’re doing by getting the booster is making sure any symptoms you have are mild and you don’t gum up the system.

No one knows what variant might come next. It may be totally benign. The issue with Omicron is it’s transmissibility and there’s some interesting math here where even though it may be x times less severe than delta for symptoms, because it is y times more transmissible, a certain proportion of z people will end up in hospital all at the same time….where z is a greater number than we have seen before. So whereas you will probably survive even if you end up in hospital, you’ll still need that hospital treatment to do so taking away resources downstream, and because of the ease of infection there’s still enough people that will get sick enough to “gum up the works”.

People won’t die as much FROM this COVID strain, but people will definitely die because of factors due to COVID. Less will die if more of us have vaccine protection from severe symptoms by getting a booster shot.

Might as well rant a bit…I already know people impacted in terms of waiting for important test results that are non-COVID related. That in turn has an impact on potential treatment schedules down the line. And for some things like certain cancers, days wasted waiting can literally make huge differences in patient outcomes.

Chatting to family back in the UK today and my sister hasn’t got any friends that have not had COVID. One died, another‘s mother died, one has long COVID symptoms they can’t shake off, most of the others had milder symptoms like headaches, fatigue etc.

I am totally unqualified to state facts but Covid could end up like the common flu with an annual shot being required or take your chances. Masks and distancing would continue for the more cautious, a practice many Asians have followed for years. It'll be a few years to find out, at best.

The economics may take longer. How will the restaurant / entertainment industry fare if 10% of their previous customers stay home?

If WFH continues, how will the landlords adjust when the spaces are massively downsized and large spaces are only required a few times a year, so conferences are done at a hotel. Most board rooms are empty most of the time so rent a common one when needed.

If WFH really takes off home can be in another province or country, where owning a house isn't a pipe dream.

As many antivaxxers pointed out, the common flu wasn't considered a big deal and it killed thousands every year. So we add another disease to the list of things that can kill you. It's like being run over by a Chevy instead of a Ford. Different brand same result.

I'm out on the booster for the time being. I want to see what direction this heads. Moderna last week said the booster is providing good protection against Omicron but at the same time said they are working on a new Omicron specific booster. So does it work or does it not? Are we doing this for every variant? What's the end game here? When do we decide to live with this virus being around, thought we were working towards that when the over whelming majority of the adult population was double vaxxed. Are we just going to put restrictions back in place every time there is a new variant?

Just questions floating around in my head.

Vaccines train antibodies to recognize certain parts of a virus. They are pretty specific so that antibodies don’t go “off the reservation” and attack things they shouldn’t. Omicron has some things that look like delta and previous variants and some things that don’t. The vaccines we currently have recognize some parts and not others of omicron thus they offer more protection than nothing but not the best.

Your seasonal flu vaccine is modified every year to better recognize whatever strain is predominant that year. This is no different with the COVID vaccine except that we don’t have a full library of variants to draw against as we are in the pandemic and it’s evolving around us.

TLDR get the booster now. If this becomes a seasonal thing then any yearly shots will better recognize the threat as we learn more about them.
 
Good protection "against serious disease".

Not the same thing as good protection against infection.

While it would be nice to have a booster shot that gives good protection against infection, such a thing is not available yet.

In the absence of that, I'll settle for something that improves my odds of staying out of the hospital. I can deal with being under the weather for a couple of days, should it come to that.
