The only reason I came into this thread is because it got reported. I start reading from the offensive post and go from there. That isn't active participation....that's moderating.

Absolutely. Some of the best posts come out of outrage for the worst. If you ever saw 4chan when it was any good (probably a debatable adjective for the place lol), it had some of the most disgusting **** that you'd ever see on the internet (including opinions). But it also had some of the most intelligent debates that I've ever seen in my life. And you can't forget that humour also requires intelligence.

tbh I think rob's entitled to as many "useless" posts as he wants...he's had way more helpful ones (so it also seems irrelevant that he's a mod).

Personally, I've been on a couple of forums before (including super serious ones) and I think that gtam is a pretty good mix of clashing characters & opinions

i might agree with you to some extent (personally, never found 4chan to be worth it), but i really don't think comparing it to this site is analogous.

have we seen a lot of intelligent debate on this site?

there's a lot of immature and troll-like posts, tho. lol, one guy here still makes penis comments as though he doesn't realize how stupid those posts make him look.

nope, i have no problem with how most people reacted to the pills. it's the people who decided to use it as justification for decrying an entire group of people and culture, that i have difficulty with.

nope, patently untrue. i criticize mainland china all the time. i have a lot of problems with their government, how they pollute the environment, their criminal treatment of workers, exploitation of migrant workers, etc.

nope, i think i've already explained the issue i had with the joke--it perpetuates the idea by some members that their ignorance, racism, and/or hate is condoned.

i think more than anything, i wonder if someone fresh to riding were to sign up with this site and this was the first thread they read, could they walk away with the idea that we are a community of small-minded xenophobes? it's amazing to think that if the same people were to spout in public the idea that so-and-so country should be wiped off the map that they would be censored for hate speech, but that when it's written here, it's somehow okay.

generally, i have no issue with how the forum is moderated, but this thread, and a few others, definitely demonstrate that the rules, whatever they may be, are unevenly applied.

It is inherently impossible for moderating to be "evenly applied" when you have a situation that to a person of one background seems like an innocent comment but to another, is racist and offensive. It gets even more difficult when a person of the first background doesn't even understand WHY a certain comment could be seen as racist and offensive by someone of some other background, and yet the person of the other background can't grasp why the person of the first background would ever say something like that. But it happens! How can anything ever be "evenly applied" when you have a situation like that?

don't know how it works here, but at a site that i modded and admin-ed, we had short discussions amongst the team to ensure we were always on the same page in terms of handling issues as they arose.

i clearly know that as a moderator team you're all going to be defensive when you are challenged on what you do. that's natural. i am not surprised in the least that i'm receiving push back for my comments. . .that's human nature.

ultimately, you can choose to completely ignore what i have written and keep doing things exactly the way your team has been.

I responded to that post, calling it for what it was ... not decent enough moderating I guess. Apparently moderators should filter free speech, the only things that should be posted need to follow a specific agenda.
