dispite what afong says, chinese culture has actually been around for 5 millienia. the things you mentioned are all since world war two, the great leap forward, and communism. are you saying communism is cultural now? You just have no clue whats cultural and whats not.

how can oppression of the people be cultural? that means that the people think thats ok and agree with it, and you should know that isn't true, look at tianiman square.

Polluting isn't cultural, its selfish capitalism, something every industiralized country experienced, the fact that they are doing is a few years later than everyone else doesn't make it cultural? same with eating endangered animals. You think elephants died because of the local ivory market? no, it was all overseas to foreigners.

China's current problems come from a government who is too busy trying to stay in power and get rich and shows little regard for regulating economic activity, they have no EPA or FDA and its a situation highly similar to the industrial revolution experienced by the first world countries. The fact that the industrialized countries manage to effectively regulate its citizens after getting wealthy is a function of means, not of the culture of its people.

trying to say its cultural is saying that chinese people in canada, as well as china, think the practice is ok, that could not be further from the truth.

I don't think being a criminal is ok, thats why you don't reflect my culture. The majority of Canadians dont' think exporting asbestos is ok, thats why its not part of Canadian culture.

Can we consider that cultural considering it isn't only one person doing it but the majority who believe girls are less valuable? Therefore the culture values women less. people will define culture as they see fit, whether it actually has any relation to reality or not.

I don't see why mods can't make inappropriate jokes? With laissez-faire mods...more crap gets through...but better discussion also comes out of it. If you want some good discussion, you gotta be prepared to have less of a filter.

My comment could have as easily been made of any nation, not just China, or in fact any group at large. It just so happens that a story about China was the topic of discussion. You saw a racist comment. I didn't make a racist comment.
