Maybe the Tort would have be covered by insurance but the insurance amount was already all spoken for?
It was a long time ago but a friend had the min at the time 250K coverage and was being sued for a lot more. Insurance basically said they are just going to give the other party the 250K uncontested and the rest is his problem including legal costs. Maybe that was the case?

If that's what he meant, then yes, that can definitely happen. I was once in as similar situation being sued for 3x my coverage. I was advised to hire my own lawyer to represent me as opposed to only relying on the insurance-provided lawyer (who represents the insurance company) to fight for a settlement within my limits. Luckily the provided lawyer got them to settle within my limits and that was the end of that. Made for a few years of sleepless nights, though.
I agree with the others. Sounds like he was sued for more than his coverage. In that case, it sounds vindictive though. They wanted to crush him. Even if he had 5M coverage, I suspect they would have gone for more just to make a point. In that scenario, there is no level of coverage where you are fully protected. You may not lose in court for the full amount but that barely matters as the lawyer fees will bankrupt you.

In the USA the son of a mafia boss ran out into the street and was hit and killed by a driver. The driver disappeared shortly thereafter and was never seen again.
John Gotti's son. He was riding a minibike and was hit by a neighbour.
Some say the guy disappeared for his actions, or lack of, after the accident. more so than the actual accident itself.
I'm visiting a lawyer friend this afternoon, nice guy. Most lawyers just do what they're told. Tell them to get the $100,000 you are owed and they do that. Tell them to teach the guy a lesson as well and they go after everything.
Beware of psychopaths. Offend or hurt them and they will try to destroy you.
While I agree that's the right motor sometimes small pee pee man has a flashy boat but cheaps put on the motor as their need to show off exceeds their ability to pay.
Clinton Hammond was drifting off to sleep just after 9:30 on Saturday Night (May 18). It had been a long, wonderful day at the property he shares with other family members on Bobs Lake. Beautiful weather, water skiing, swimming, and Sunday was waiting on the other end of a restful sleep. Then...

There might be a life lesson here. If someone is doing something ridiculously dangerous in your vicinity it might be worth your while to have a word with them. It can be done without being confrontational if framed like I'm worried that you may hurt yourself. It would sure beat looking like some kind of keren talking to the media about how you have been watching this behavior for weeks and just knew that something bad was going to happen.

Every ahole on every lake has had many conversations (polite and otherwise) regarding their behaviour. Each conversation emboldens them and their behaviour worsens. The dickwad at the inlaws lake passes people in a 30' wide (ie one boat at a time) no wake zone at 60mph plus.

As with most traps, you are more likely to catch an innocent than the intended target. If I was in my boat I would have narrowed the gap and let the rocks claim him but I was in fil's boat and didn't want it to get a skid mark.
