Story indeed. They aren't dumb. It was very convenient that the least damaging situation is the official story. Maybe that's the truth but I highly suspect it was well crafted and difficult to disprove.

From that angle it's pretty clear that if he had been a few feet to the right, he'd have taken himself out of the gene pool without much damage. Unfortunately he apparently had his two kids with him.
Either way it's really clear that this idiot wasn't even able to properly see where he was operating the boat. I very much doubt he was near top speed but obviously he didn't need to be in order to do a terrible deed.
Unless this is where they towed the boats, but I don't think so... the story is that they were docked.

Buddy is well ******. Good chance he's gonna lose literally everything, and then some. Which is fine.
I'm guessing O'Leary's defense was seven figures. Like I said above about him hiring a high profile ($$$) lawyer, not with that boat he won't. You need yacht money for that. Look what happened to Donovan (Reciprocity) when he hit a pedestrian in the Burlington G&CC crosswalk on Northside Drive. The victim's son was a high profile lawyer. The lawsuit crushed him.

How old is the kid? Were they licensed? Lots of ways this still falls in the dbags lap.

For a single victim it's probably close. For three dead and five injured, I don't think anyone carries enough insurance.

Replace the water with asphalt and it sounds like a big box parking lot. Maybe Tesla needs to get into self driving boats because the brains aren't there to do it the old way.
Chances are they are related or very close friends. That's a lot of sorrow in one group. Add the unknown injuries and the cottage will never be the same.
Does Mr. Pickle Fork have a boating operators card?
Do any of his kids?
With him on board there would be some crossover of responsibility.
What kind of dad would think of putting the disgrace onto one of his kids?
