blackberry 10

Stock is taking a **** kicking on the Nasdaq. down 7% in a matter of seconds since the start of the webcast.
TSX up 5%

"Flow - Hub" looks strong. Problem might be too much integration. Do I really want to see FB updates of colleagues, clients, or have my bosses see direct access to my social media status, including my Linkedin updates? Whatsapp is mildly invasive but no where near that level and I am not certain that is a good thing. The rest of the hub is strong though.

Keyboard predictability and language "toggling" looks strong also. Would need to test it out to see how useful a feature that is and how well it works. "one thumb" typing by picking words and flinging them up was demoed quite well. Curious to see how that really works in the flesh.

Screen share is a good feature. Limited application as you have to be in the middle of a BBcall which is limited to BB users and then have them interested in seeing a live screen of your device. Neat but very limited as it overrides their phone. I can't think of any time I ever needed to see the screen of a contact's phone, other than a screen shot or a specific link or file while at the same time sacrificing my phone to their control. It may have some over-seer applications of a micromanaging boss though.

Image editor looks light or weak. but...

"Story maker" is a great native app for making instant Youtube-ish videos! But I am certain another app developer will have that on other OSs in no time flat. It is basically a very stripped down automated video editor.

"Top app partners"...Skype, Whatsapp, Economist, Angry Birds, etc. Good start but after their previous app blunders I doubt they will work as well as any other platform. Kinda heard all this before. I fell for this back when PB's update was released and the Android sideloading was heavily hyped. "Can install apps simultaneously without needing to reboot"....welcome to 2011!

Release dates....
US: End of Feb...lab testing! March availability on most carriers in US.

Canada: $199 on 3 years contract by Feb 5th.

Available in UK tomorrow!

Very dodgy start!!!!!! $200 and stuck to a 3 year contract?!?!?!?!?!!?!

At least we will have some user reviews coming out of the UK sharpish.

Celebrity spokes people: gimmicky but high calibre classy choices. BS that Alicia Keys will do anything for BB other than promotional stuff on the side, but the hype is well appreciated I'm sure. Early talk of Gaga not coming to fruition was a good move.

All in all....not too bad. Looks like they are running with the pack although the handsets themselves don't impress me much. Still bitter to have to wait 2 years to get a phone version of the PB, or wait 2 years for a decent OS that does next to nothing to innovate beyond what is currently on the market. Aside from the hub and flow which (seems) intuitive, I see nothing here to bring me back to BB from Android or my Note2. No stylus, no annotation capabilities, no native office suite, no split screen, no word on battery life, the list goes on....

I truly don't feel the hub integration was worth the delay and what they had in November was a half baked OS. The delay in the launch met with a further 2 months to get this product to market is a fail and does not bode well for their growth over the coming couple years. Not a single mention of future products or the allusion to mobile computing Heinz is trying to take credit for in some Al Gore invented the internet fashion.

I give the release a B- which slightly bettered my expectations.

This is controlled by the Blackberry Balance setting, whether the phone is in 'Work' or 'Personal' mode.
When in Work mode, you can't see personal things, unless you go out of your way to setup personal accounts on your Work profile.

They have Skype, WhatsApp, etc on BB10.

Why is the stock going down!? It was right where I predicted it would be back in Dec. $18.

http://www.marketwatch.com/investing/stock/rim?countrycode=ca

People shorting shares and perhaps triggering stops. Short interest is pretty high on RIM stock and its been going up along with the share price.. I was watching the stock and as soon as they started doing the demo on the phone, it dropped real hard. Its not likely real selling on the part of actual long investors.

Here's my prediction for the BB10 Super Bowl commercial.

"Que James Bond Music"
2 special ops solders leave Blackberry headquarters with a new BB10 phone,
While trying to deliver the phone they have to deal with terrorists and Apple fan boys.
In the final scene they arrive by helicopter to the White House, run down the hallway to the Oval Office and hand Obama his new phone.
Obama plays with the phone and says, "This is sweet...but can you get me the one with the keyboard?"
End scene with logo and James Bond Music.

I'm mildly placated. Better be better on the battery life or I'll be enraged again.

Actually I had to come back to rip on this issue more....

"working on an update"?!?!?!?! What?!?!?! Sad they aren't coming out all guns blazing with an update to time with the release of the phone. At least it could entice PB users to adopt the OS and go run out and buy a Z10! FLOP! Secondly they are conceding the demise of a tablet agenda, rumours quashed. That's it, the old out dated PB is what we (formally loyal) bboys are stuck with.

Any mention of the phablet? Nope! Nothing in the pipes!

Any release date on the BB10 PB update? Nope!

And what a cop out on the battery life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PB has always had a strong battery life. I was always impressed that after extremely heavy use my Curve would crap out by 7pm. With a quick charge I could squeeze another hr long music / jogging session; then I could care less if it blacked out by 10pm or so.

My new Note2 has Ouuuuuuuuuutstanding battery life, literally 30 to 40% more on my old Curve. I run that phone ragged with speaker conference calls, speaker music sessions, video watching, upwards of 100 emails in and 60+ emails out a day, document editing, and so on....and the Note2 makes it to 9pm easily. In my light use days (weekends) I usually get to 24 hours with 30% life left on the battery.

Now, why did I just pump up the Note2 again? Well because I am flabbergasted that that kind of phone with such heavy screen use can crank out such impressive battery life, and I am shocked Mr. Ketchup dismissed the matter as remedied by the "removable battery feature" and suggested one "carry around an extra battery"!!!!!!!!! Samsung has the same "feature" and would never suggest such a thing, as they took a huge leap forward in battery life from the first (flyer) Note, to the (established / game changing / niche creating) Note2.

This is the reality of what BB is up against!

Obama is Blackberry's most famous user...why not use him to launch the phone?
http://crackberry.com/president-obama-still-using-his-blackberry

Not so sure he would be willing to endorse. Could use the "president" from 24 though! But the whole relay thing was done to better effect by Google.

But then again, I doubt anyone watching the Superbowl is really that aware of Google glass and the shtick could be regurgitated by BB with a polished refinement that could play well with audiences.

On a another note, Obama could cut down on those "er um ah" pauses if he were to adopt Google Glass and use it as a teleprompter. Could have done wonders for Bush also.

Personally I am itching for Glass as a motorcycle HUD!!! Less eye fatigue than Oakley's HUD too I suspect.

PS Google glass already in the hands of developers for $1500 a pop.

But by the end of 2013 Google is aiming to have them to consumers for $300 to $500 each.

If one has waited this long (2+ years for a BB smartphone) you're probably used to waiting for mediocrity. Why not wait another 11 months for meteor-crity!!! Why lock into a 3 year contract for a "meh" product that will be antiquated inside of 6 months?

Anyone wearing those idiot glasses will be vigorously mocked, just like those tools who walk around talking with Bluetooth in their ears.

Just cause it's cool to you, doesn't mean it's cool to the cool kids who set the trends.

What about Punisher nose fairings? ;)

That was fast!

No more RIP jokes! Damn!
No more RIM job jokes! Damn!

My recourse is.....

Dingleberry

"A smallish, semi-dry, extraordinarily tenacious remnant of fecal matter which, when unwittingly rolled into a mixture with toilet paper lint by the action of wiping, becomes almost irremovably entangled among ones anal hair, a situationality exacerbated by the vigorous chafing and friction between the buttocks and most commonly remedied by the sad and almost entirely unavoidable remedy of plucking out at its root the individual hair to which each dingleberry is conjoined. Of related interest, dingleberries are often noted as having the vague odor of undigested corn or peanuts." - Urban Dictionary

Sounds about right.

Which one has been more successful?

Um, who cares?

Can you drop a little hint as to the conclusion I'm supposed to draw from that question?

I'm going to guess you're saying....

Looking like a dipshit is cool because helmet cams have had different success rates?

Honestly. I don't get the comparison.
