blackberry 10

I have a google phone +3 apps. It's from 2010 and it was free with a plan. It's worked every time I have used it if it's been in range of a tower.

Had a BB years back and it jammed and rebooted at every inconvenient time so I'm not a fan. Nothing political. I have a Curve from work. I like my phone better and it's older.

Google will sell that thing just like Nintendo sold the power glove but you'll pay $1500 for it.

Compared to the technology it's washed down from that's cheap but it's a beta of easily breakable crap on hipster glass frames.

No where close to Ironman bud. Just years later trickle down tech as a fad for kids to out iPad each other with. You're not really in that demographic. Zack Morris and all.

This is how you go super sayan.

But you have to be one of the cool kids. Screech.

Touche (Screech). Well played.

Not sure if the iPad is a kiddie trend though, as it did reinvigorate the slate / tablet dream and motivate others to step forward and produce tablets that were actually productive. Almost the way the iPhone jump started the Smartphone dream 5 years after the PDA / phone combo first materialized. I referenced the 3G network as an example of a premature tech that seemed kitchy and gimmicky for some time, until some slick marketing heads at Apple capitalized and aggregated the divergent tech innovations.

Google (with Glass) has that ability to synergize and boost the current technology and I wouldn't be so quick to disparage such a device as some kiddie pissing contest.

BB should be secretly developing the same tech and try and get within 1 year of a Google release date. Samsung is also well placed with their current and future transparent and flexible screen tech. Apple might be in trouble and will have limited ability to purchase such tech if their cache keeps dropping and Samsung doesn't see an advantage in selling them the tech. As Apple potentially could lose market share Samsung might tighten the noose on proprietary tech.

BB is already too late to develop flexible or transparent screens, but they can get a jump on something like Google Glass, cause as your say, the hardware is fairly basic. As they are not a threat they may also be able to source transparent screen tech.

The bottom line of my point....and to bring this back to the positive / lessons to be learned for the future realm...is that ultimately we all want the best for BB, or at least a Canadian company. And if nothing else it may have been a great ride and there are some great take aways from the BB saga, even if they sound negative from first glance.

To tie this back to Motorcyces, which is really why we are all here on this forum, I would like to draw a counter parallel to a small, regional national firm that turned things around and developed a recovery strategy and kicked it off despite only inklings of a possible downward decent....Ducati!

Small, patriotic, over hyped, defined the Superbike class through the early naughties, and kind of coasted through the late 1098/1198 phase. They developed an aggressive strategy through the recession in the direct face of the BMW domination of the performance of the SS class, and the giants of Honda and Yamaha!

Ducati strategically targeted a new market (the US), picked up a second rate rider (Nicky), a likely has been, with hidden potential (Checa), launched the bloated (by European standards) Diavel, innovated and turned the Multistrada into the Swiss Army knife of bikes, one on the back of the success of the other, culminating in the dramatically over hyped Panigale.

In the end no one product of theirs is superior to their competition, even the Panigale! But in the end their strategy was never to be number 3, and they capitalized on their zealously loyal fan base, and aesthetic pedigree. They ramped up the life style marketing and went from strength to strength. Aprilia did well too, but Ducati didn't have a economic safety net of Piaggio, and they knew they couldn't rely on the 3rd world or developing markets to save them!

Was a buy out in the cards? Damn sure it was, just like it was for MV Agusta and Buell. But where those 2 outfits were powerless to chart their own paths under Harley, Ducati groomed themselves for cherry picked buyout by the power house Audi!

My hope would have been to see RIM make similar moves. It wasn't necessary for a total revamp like Apple. RIM was never that crushed and their stock tumble was as much negative hype as the recent rally has been positive hype. But at the same time RIM really hasn't done anything in the way of Ducati.

a) RIM needs to aggressively target a leading market, even if it means leaving their comfort zone. Launching late in the US was not wise.
b) RIM needs to innovate and develop a new bench mark product or tech that will feed into a new line of development stream....like Ducati's electronic suspension or frameless design for example. Despite it not proving to be a game changer, the perception of innovation at the very least has endeared people to Ducati rather than sticking with that stubborn trellis frame!
c) Don't put all their eggs into one basket. Rossi flopped, but Nicky succeeded. Ducati was able to weather such a setback by diversifying their target demographic. RIM needs to be able to buffet a potential set back in the coming months! What is their back up plan?
d) Despite the circling of the vultures, RIM needs to at least plan for an advantageous buy out, not a cop out with shoulders shrugged. I'll credit BB with seeking options in that regard but even a groomed buy out needs some staging and presentation. The "make or break" attitude of BB is not the right approach. Ducati never proposed the Diavel or the Multistrada as a make or break move, even if behind closed doors it was.

Bottom line is that BB doesn't really need to out perform their competitors in terms of their product if they can follow the Ducati model. The question is if they have that kind of strategy and vision in their ranks to buy another 2 years to then be in a position to be merged or be an innovator again.

Were any of you convinced today by that presentation that they have such minds in their ranks? FFS the phones weren't even appealing!!!!!! Nothing sexy and alluring about them! That was an easy opportunity to appeal to form over function the way Ducati arouses passion!

All you've been demonstrating is why RIM was wise to fire your ***.

You're really hyped about that watch arent u?

Sent from my Phone, dont judge the grammar

I didn't really read what he said I just wanted to see how much he could type in response.

Sounds like he is gearing up for a sale. QNX is simply NOT vertically integrated and any car company can drop it in a heart beat, especially with no contracts or proprietary arrangements in place. Heinz is proposing vertical integration / mobile computing as a 3 to 5 years strategy! That's an absurd time-line!!!! Especially when MS is already all over it like stink on a monkey!

Looks to me like BB would rather sell off the firm on the basis of QNX rather than slug it out. On the face of it, the company does look like a good buy now compared to 1 year ago. The handsets can allow a buyer to coast for at least a year while a much more integrated giant implements or progresses the QNX potential.

The potential of QNX might be the white elephant but no one can be certain and there is certainly proof of potential, and it seems that may be the saving grace of BB as every other traditional aspect of BB falls of the map (security, keyboard, led, data compression, etc).

BB has clearly demonstrated they are NOT a software firm and they couldn't ripen a banana, let alone an OS (that was already functional when purchased). BB needs a proper software giant to buy them and progress QNX to this so called potential.

I foresee a BB sale if the BB10 is a relative success.

Maybe they sell off at $30 when it looks like they have momentum to climb to $40 (if the Z10 is a success).

I'm a little put off by Heinz ambiguity and distancing. He smacks of a "cleaner" CEO that sees his job as almost wrapped up. I don't feel he is a long term CEO.

Being German Heins, just made BB10 the Mercedes-Benz of the smart phones. While every dishwasher is playing angry birds on his iphone during lunch breaks, the decision makers will be running the world using BB10. I heard this phone is so good, Jobs may rise from the dead to over see iphone 6.

I'm in the midst of watching the launch video now. I like what I'm seeing. I'm even being swung over to the touch-screen model.

Very good review of the Z10 on the Verge. Bad news is battery life is reported as puttering out before the end of the work day. Reports of Heinz' "carry a second battery" seem to be substantiated and doesn't bode well for the future of the OS or hardcore business users. Some frank in depth review of the hub and 8 recent "widget" limit.

The Note (1) had a poor battery life but then again that was a flyer of a phone that was a surprise success even to Samsung!

Some useless background trivia on google HUD glasses,
Larry Elison, who has some connection to the software business had his designers on this 6 yrs ago for his sailboat racing program. Larry won the America Cup, (which has bigger budgets than F1) racing with the skipper wearing $100,000 custom oakley sunglass with HUD for critical info, speed, compass, wind angles. At the time he wore a backpack with batteries and a reciever transmitting to the glasses.
Larry's hobby is behind this product, it's going to be everywhere in 3-5 yrs.

this stuff isnt for everybody, but its cool in some circles

No it's not. You want to know why? Wearing glasses isn't cool. That's why someone invented contact lenses. Stick that **** in a contact lens, and you might have something.

Helmets are lame too. Squish your face, noisy, muffly, heavy.....if there is a need or desire they will be worn. PS glasses more than sufficed until contacts were invented. All the while glasses had the stigma of a disability (poor vision). You'll notice tinted contacts have not taken off despite the technology while sun glasses, googles, visors, etc are cool as fook!

Lazzy? That you? Still upset about your sacking?

So I'm sitting here playing with my new Blackberry 10 and I gotta say, its pretty seamless and nice. allegedly craploads of new apps being released to go with. I've not had a touch screen phone as a personal phone and I'm missing the manual keyboard a bit but I think in a day I'll be fine. Its a nice clean unit, linked with my household wireless and virtually set it self up.
very similar to the galaxy. I'm happy

You got a new wifi enabled tv? if so can you one tap fling movies or images onto the tv?

Is the hub just another name for the typical bb all in one inbox that was on their previous OSs? Starting to hear negative reviews of the hub as it is not a message preview hub as advertised but actually one mega inbox as with their previous inboxes. I hated that damn mega inbox! The Android notification centre is worlds ahead of the mega inbox!

Typically I would get 100+ work emails in a day, 10+ personal emails, 30ish calls, 25+ Whatsap, another bunch of txts, etc. I hated that in the BB inbox it was all just thrown in and not distinguished or categorized! Android handles large amounts of messages far better than any previous BB....I constantly had that haunting "new messages" number which I could never bring down under 30!!!!! It was seriously stressful to never be able to bring down that number because I deliberately left a message as unread in Outlook to be able to get back to it later!

Seriously though my stress factor has dropped off now that I can swipe away a "35 new messages" notification from work in one swipe. Or brush away "10 new messages" from a Whatsapp biker group! What a huge difference not to have that haunting number of new messages!!! That damn blinking light was like Chinese water torture until you went through every stupid app to preview a new message! Don't even get me started on the damn PB echo of every damn message in bridge mode!!!!!

so tell us, how is the hub working out?????

Congrats by the way!

Very very deep review here!

For sale: One old pony, does tricks...well one trick. Once was famous circus pony...now selling cheap to turn into glue.

12% stock drop + late launch + rebranding of company. Not good omens.

I havent got this hub thing totally figured out and may need a 12 yr old as consultant.
It appears I can spilt my personal mail and work mail and work files/personal files and build folders so its not one huge inbox
i'm liking the multiple image screen and intuitive email typing
It will type email from dictation, FINALLY

playbook like browser and very fast, 200% faster browser than my curve and pages look "less mobile"

no smart tv here, but it turned my house thermostat up. and no not by accident

so the hub wont be key for me, my daughter thinks its killer, but she follows Facebook, twitter and BBM and mail continuosly and the hub sits as a preview and can be open while all other apps run. Its very cool for the 20yr old.
I'm a business user, I have no video/music on my phone, the HDMI output will be of little use in my world. Being able to run multiple email accts and split them out cleanly is very attractive.

Split screen? As in 2 fully running apps, perhaps drag and drop from one email attachment into another? Or a file directory? That would be killer! Android has the split screen but no drag and drop from email to email as far as I can tell.

looks like i can tile four screens and run multiple apps, I cant get all my mail running, my IT guy will have to set our servers to push to a new device (so I'm told) , this thing has potential, i love the way the phone directory appears and with the screen size I can read stuff without squinting. The browser is like my playbook and the interweb loads are WAY faster than conventoinal BB.

Cause everyone lined up for those 3d TVs with the glasses...right?
