blackberry 10

No it's not. You want to know why? Wearing glasses isn't cool. That's why someone invented contact lenses. Stick that **** in a contact lens, and you might have something.

Tom Cruise, Raybans in Risky Business, stopped wearing the raybans and went batcrap looney and got divorced

Jack Nicholson? prescription Raybans

Roy Orbison? , just cool, didnt need glasses, wore 'em because they are cool

Steve McQueen?, king of cool wore glasses

Strippers in plaid skirts, white blouses and glasses? so cool

Me, yeah I'm cool to

I think the idea of transparent screens & HUD incorporated into glasses is meaningful if you actually have a need for it like the example of a competitive sail boat racer who has to look at vital stats or a variety of metrics that help his performance. Like, Ironman, controlling a sophisticated armoured suit that can fly and shoot all kinds of weaponry. Like a fighter pilot that is flying a jet at ridiculous speeds while shooting down bad guys. That I can dig. You can make a business case for all of these.

What is silly though is the idea of converting a smartphone into a set of glasses given the kind of things people will realistically do with a smartphone - surf the web, tweet, facebook, text/email and on occasion make actual phone calls. This whole idea of being "connected" which in a way actually does the opposite. I can just visualize all these clowns walking down the street with blank looks on their faces, walking in front of traffic and getting smushed, and furthering the trend of not paying attention to what and who is around them. Its already fairly ridiculous how many people walk down the street with their heads down staring at their phones.

If you actually care about your health, frequency/radio waves actually do have a negative impact and the idea of wearing a reciever of such waves on my face and around my brain all day just does not sound like a good idea.. I don't even carry a smart phone in my pant pocket because there is clinical evidence it lowers your sperm count.

Most people that actually partake in the real world will also find it a hinderace to have a device like this strapped to their face. Not having the wear glasses is so much better than having to wear glasses so Im not sold on the idea of HUD glasses.

Neither of them look very interesting or innovative...

Just looks like a late to the game screen phone and another office tool that the Curve pretty much is.

Nothing that would make me want one or even replace an old phone with on a new plan.

The real question is, is it 'good' enough to solidify that 3rd spot on the smartphone hierarchy behind Apple and Google?

We'll know when sales numbers get released next quarter, until then, we can just sit and wait. I know a few people that are buying them to check them out.

Transparent screens seem to be the evolution that phones will follow until we get a tactile projected UI. I agree with your HUD comments as well, adding that if you were requiring a high tech HUD like this you would get one from a serious company that has been doing it for a decade and not google. L3 or similar.

If Oakley and someone came together on a project like that it might have results but right now you have one company with half the product and another with the tech.

The viable HUD market if for people that require head mounted info feeds and NV / IR optics. Especially at this stage where you are bound to your laptop and an awkward one hand pocket mouse that will probably be mistaken for you wanking yourself in public.....

Keep them afloat in an office environment?

Possibly.

There is no end to must complete PDF tasks in the corp world.

RIP blackberry :(

I dont see anything competitive for them. I think they had a better chance if they had offer their hardware in android or something

Sent from my Phone, dont judge the grammar

I am of the belief that even if BB created the best phone hands down, the naysayers would still bash it. If you've built your reputation destroying Blackberry, that humble pie would be too great to swallow at this point. It's a great product and every BB user I spoken with, online and in person has all told me they plan on upgrading. Waterloo is a big tech town and not everyone works for BB here so seeing the tech community embracing BB10 was quite something. I don't think this is the phone that will delivery the knock out punch that everyone seemed to expect, but it will certainly shut some people up about the death of this company.

What they released is sufficient to keep current clientele, but i dont see it snatching away android or iphone users.

BB10 is very innovative and as a current Enterprise BB user, way more than I expected. There are many brands out there of all products and I see no reason why BB cannot compete. Having iphone, Google, and a few main competitors will keep all companies sharp just like the auto industry etc. We never want the day that you only have one choice.

Cause everyone lined up for those 3d TVs with the glasses...right?
I have one of those fancy 3d TV'S.... I didn't even know and I have used the glasses a total of 1 time

Went milling around Eaton's Centre today looking for a Z10 to demo. Mum's the world and the people at Roger's looked anything but hyped, stating "we are all in the same boat...no demo for another 2 weeks until after the product drops".

Hmmm

I have heard about the odd demo here and there but it is really hit or miss when you're trying to hype a product up. Big news like that, and then a week cool off period? Even if you were a fan hurting to line up over night, cause there are those that just love that experience of fanatacism, you are really left "blue balled".

Even MS set up a kiosk at EC ahead of their release of Surface and Surface Pro. They hit Dundas SQ today in the snow with a tent to pump the new Office Suite too.

This is F'n TO and BB can't launch in style?!?

I can understand trickle feed teasers in the build up to a launch, but when the penny drops there really does need to be fan fair and pomp and circumstance in the tangible flesh.

Xbox set up a retail store to launch Kinect ahead of launch also, and TO aint even their home town!!!

Win8 phone may not be as polished as BB10 or perhaps it is on par with its own idiosyncrasies, but it has serious weight and vertical intergration potential behind it, along with some stigma, yes. But BB is now in a similar leakier boat and no muscle behind their punch.

There should have been at least 1 demo kiosk, heavily advertised with 10 demo Z10s....at least!

http://forums.crackberry.com/blackberry-z10-f254/where-can-i-try-out-z10-today-toronto-765963/

Crackberry is reporting sporadic locations demo'ing it. Sad launch to say the least when there is this much confusion.

6 days to cool off the presentation is doing them no service. You want to capitalize on fanboi queue hype! You want glassy eyed dropped jawed "BB people" filing out of some temporary kiosk / boutique store waving their BB10s in the air like they have been baptized by Jimmy Swaggert himself!

Rumors of what rep might be pulling a demo out of his pants on the sly or incompleted deliveries or stock locked back of house is not the right way to launch a product. What was the point of the simultaneous presentations in London, TO, NY, Dubai etc for anyways? Could have been one net feed out of London where they actually launched! There was no regional experience and no point to the useless international countdown. It was either half assed, on the cheap, or poorly cobbled together.

Waterloo isn't a big tech town, it's the arse end of nowhere. They would like to think they are Silicon Valley North but that's like saying Prince Andrew is the smartest Royal...so what, he's still dumb as a stick. Chucking money at buildings just makes them brand new and shiny, throwing money at people doesn't make them suddenly smart....that doesn't innovate things and there's not that much innovation on display here. There's a lot of catch up and perhaps some incremental "me-too" improvements but RIM is no Google.

I agree with this completely... the phone was over hyped going into launch.. people were touting it as the second coming of christ for some reason and the word revolutionary was thrown around a lot.. and I'm guilty of it too. The truth is what else can a smart phone really do? what else would you want it to do? People said the same thing when the i5 was released.. it was nothing extraordinarily new, but really what else were they going to add? So now because of all of that over hype apple users are saying wheres the revolution? I thought it was going to eat my iphone for breakfast and writing it off.. The truth is, it doesn't really do anything the iphone doesn't do.. But it does do everything the iphone does. And it does so with UI that I really like.. it does a few things better them some of the other OS in terms of the way you access information in my personal opinion, and that's just preference.. some really like the UI on the iphone, I never have.. for the way I do things on my device I find it slows me down.. This is the one for me. That doesn't mean it's better or worse then the iphone.. it's the same.. it's just better FOR ME as the others are to others. The only indisputable fact that should be agreed on by anyone giving it an honest and unbiased review.. is that it has the best web browser available. And that's by independent test.. it's the fastest and it scores the highest of any browser for HTML5. But all in all it doesn't do anything the other big two don't do. It just does to everything they can do, and opens the door for personal choice in the way those things are done.

This is also true.. every single person should be rooting for BB10 to succeed.. because even if you don't like it for yourself personally.. it advances the space. As a whole the OS might not be for you, but there will be a feature or two you like.. and guess what, apple will copy them in their next release, and add a little something extra, and then google will copy that and add their flare.. then rim will come out with BB11, copy both those things and add something else.. as a whole that's what keeps the industry moving.. if there's no competition apple and android would get complacent, new features won't be developed and everyone looses.

Went to my Telus rep this morning to get my new SIM card, its a micro so your BB curve SIM doesnt fit, switched over and had my IT guy move my email push and I'm loving this thing.
Took a bit for typing but I'm on to it, Telus commercial has a reasonable number of pre orders.

Hard part was getting all the Telus reps to let me leave, they havn't got product and have no hands on experience, everybody wanted to play with it. I'm happy enough and think Z10 will keep BB going for a bit.

Though most of what you said makes great sense, I strongly disagree with your BB11 comment. What you see now is what you get!

It took them over 2 years to "bake" an already "Pillsbury" off the shelf ready made OS. They botched the hell out of its implementation in PB and took a further 2 years to prepare it for a smaller size hardware. That is shameful! BB OS7 was a joke, delayed, and was not backward compliant with half their hardware effectively severing a massive chunk of their product line and limiting the company's fortunes in the interim to BBOS7 uncompetitive phones! That was effectively a 3+ year fumble!

With all their talk of Porche (vertical integration) nothing came of it, except a car demo and an insanely priced dressed up Bold.

Yes we are here today and viewing a "me too" product, but the path to get here inspires zero confidence they are capable of a backward compliant upgrade! FFS there is no release date or info on a PB update of the F'n baseline OS (QNX)!!!!!!! No one can even in the tech industry is even allowed to fiddle with what should have been the easiest phone in their roster to roll out, the Q10!!!!!

This is one of the worst cobbled launches in the industry! Dates are all over the place! I wouldn't be surpirsed if there was a recall or serious failures of the device, based on my experience with BB myself, going through 2 white screens of death!

Why exactly would anyone believe they could launch a BB11 any faster or better than their BB10 launch or Apple or the merciless Android progress and constant updates?!?!

I mean come on, the Android emulation on the BB10 OS is Android 2.3!!!!!!!!!!

Hey anyone remember that the PB update to OS 2 wiped the entire device clean?!?! Yeah, real confidence inspiring!!!! And what did the latest update of the PB provide...sms messaging while bridged, thus draining 2 batteries at once! And having 2 stupid devices beaping and chirping away like a nagging boss.

Do you really believe BB10 will achieve vertical integration with your car, tablet, laptop or what ever inside of 5 years, especially when Heins has spoken on the record of stating something like that would take 3 to 5 years?

Have you been to the Apple store? Forget Apps for a moment, have you seen the number of peripherals for their phone? Baby monitors, remote control helicopters, etc?

BB10 is it.....for a looooooooong time. They have NOTHING in reserve. BB is that one white sprinter at the beginning of a marathon with nothing in the tank for the last 20kms. Oh and they sprinted right into 3rd/4th!
