blackberry 10

Ready to blow up this thread tomorrow? The whole thread has been building to this moment! Who's pumped? At the very least it will end the 9 pages of speculation and possibly silence a bunch of us.

Did you pre-order the White one or the Black one? or both? :D

Heinz interview on Lang O'leary on CBC tomorrow at 6:30pm. It should be worth a good "good cop bad cop" cross without too many softballs.

I'll hold off my order and break out the camping tent after the interview.

Do you guys get this excited about .....say motorcycles??

*looks outside at the snow* not this time of year..

UK SHOCKER: BLACKBERRY PLAYBOOK IS OUTSELLING THE NEW IPAD

"the PlayBook shifted 160,000 units and the latest-generation iPad 113,000 units over the Christmas period,"

http://bgr.com/2013/01/29/ipad-sales-uk-blackberry-playbook-310687/

:laughing3:

If they can sell their phones at $0 with 1 year contracts (fight the 3 years contract or subsedize it tooth and nail with the carriers) and undercut the iPad and Note2 (for example) by a couple hundred bucks, then they stand a chance. The PB has been shifting due to fire sale prices. At $120 the PB is a decent browser. At $175 people still felt ripped off. At $500, well you know what that did to the PB back when it's specs were competitive 2 years ago (though it's software was no where near competitive).

RIM needs the trifecta....competitive specs, competitive software and boot leg prices! Actually they need more than that, but that is the minimum they need to recover. If their price point is too high for a 3rd place product then they have already tied their shoelaces together! Even if their product is on par with the pack (maybe not leading), a comparable price to the others wont cut it.

I would also recommend back up measures:

1) Fight the 3 year contract (that's a killer when people consider how long they will be stuck with a handset).
2) Undercut everyone out there. Develop better value for money pedigree as a mission statement. A falsely inflated mark up, pretending to be elitist will hurt them badly and their arrogance will be taken badly by all those who are desperate to give them another chance.
3) Encourage sales of handsets off contract for no more than $350 to $400 to allow people currently locked in contracts with other phones to risk swapping hand sets.
4) Heavily subsidize current (loyal) BB users to upgrade handsets for half price or less! They need to reward the loyalty of those who have stuck it out all this time and get these new handsets out on cafe tables with pride like they used to be! Every chump who bought into bb7 over the last 10 months deserves a heavy subsidy!!!!

At the very least offer the above for a term of 1 year. If they can pull it off they can gradually up the price point of new products like the rumoured phablet and PB2.

only 1 out of 10 smart phones is a BB sold right now, this better be the real deal.

My son is at the pre launch media scrum at the Carlew downtown covering with Global, whats being leaked sounds good (hype, hype, more hype...)

Interesting point that seems to have been overlooked:

"BB10 is likely to erode a significant profit stream: BB7 subscribers pay RIM, through their carriers, a monthly fee for RIM's unique services. We estimate that consumers pay around $2 to $3 per month and corporate users $7 to $8 .
With BB10 this monthly fee drops away for consumers and for smaller companies. We estimate that this may cut RIM's gross profit by over $1bn (£635m) over the next two years.
To replace this profit stream RIM needs to raise device sales by approximately 15 million units, or a 50% increase. Only if sales exceed this level can RIM's profits start to rise.
So while the initial impact of BB10 could continue to support RIM's share price we believe that the longer term outlook remains challenging. "

All their eggs in one handset it seems! Propriety out the window too, which means they are on even footing with the other handset makers and OS systems. That completely erodes their previous confidence retaining mantra and leaves them out in the open for attacks. The lack of cool factor is all the more damaging while this exposed to trends as they are no longer anchored in the corporate or back-end service arenas.

RIM just dropped their name. Adopted BlackBerry only.

Good I was tired of thinking there was a research and development firm behind BB that was generating new products and services. At least this way it is clear what they are and what they do. The name RIM was deceptive or belonged to another era.
