Bikes with character...

Yeah my bad, ya Sportster. Another line HD has changed. Doesn't really resemble previous generations anymore

So has the current Monster. The removal of the trellis frame made it a completely new bike unrecognizable from ever other Monster in the history of the line-up.

They should have called it something else.

I have an old notebook at work and came across a pro-con list from when I was looking at similar bikes D.Scrambler vs Thruxton vs V7 (don't remember if I was wanting racer or stone this day)

My biggest worry about the Guzzi was if I ever dropped it and damaged a cylinder head. In the end I chose Ducati Scrambler. But then when I sat on one at the show the controls felt so cheap up close. I felt that things should be premium with the Ducati badge. I ended up procrastinating until I was able to ignore GTAM and buy the Harley I really wanted deep down. (and the switch housings were aluminum!)

My 8yr old pro-con list (based mostly on online stats and reviews) was:
Triumph:
+Dealer, classic look, biggest engine
-brakes, suspension, weight
Ducati:
+Brakes, engine, comfort
-looks, desmo valves, could only buy new
Guzzi:
+suspension, exotic, handling
-dealers, comfort, smallest engine

Thanks for that @woot very helpful! And sums up some of my thoughts on those as well.

As for 'character'...not sure about these but they look good...

Too bad the smaller engine doesn't come with the white/red that @oioioi has on his big boy version.

Fun fact: Of the twenty people still posting on GTAM, ten of them own V-Stroms....

Sold mine. Got a Tiger with cruise control now.

Hopefully, it doesn't develop "character", like my friend's Harley.
There was some kit in it from the U.S. when he bought it.
One of the inexpensive parts used wasn't adequate for the job required, and it toasted the engine.

That's not character, that is frustrating. I am fine with separating character (interesting and/or fun to ride) and being an unreliable POS.

650 Stroms aren't fun to ride? I thought it was the big ones that were character deficient

Stop hating on the VSTROM.
Our army of StromTroopers is big and we will fight if we need to.

That XA model should have cruise control. The base models did not come with cruise control.

And yes it would also be nice if the 650 was offered in the same color as the 1050.

The VStrom 650 starts to really shine after I've been on the bike for 2 hours and realize that my ass doesn't hurt and I can ride for at least another hour before needing to look for gas, and I've got room to bring back some ridiculously oversized Princess Auto impulse purchase if I want to. The same features that tend to make a bike characterless also mean they have fewer sharp edges to the experience that get annoying after a few hours.

If you have the room and money, two bikes works great. One practical bike, and one characterful bike. The XSR900 that's also in my garage makes me giggle at least once per ride. Aside from the engine, part of the character is how impractical it actually is:
  • range is less than 250kms, and the fuel light shows full bars until 125km, at which point it falls off a cliff
  • the tank is aluminum so you can't use a magnetic tankbag
  • the gas cap is offset to one side so you can't use those nifty tankbags with the locking rings without looking dumb
  • the stock seat is good for 40 minutes tops, there's no wind protection at all, etc...
I knew all of that before I bought the XSR900, and it doesn't matter because it's also perfect in the role that it fills. I'm never going to try to turn it into a tourer.

The VStrom is like a wife: a little worn around the edges, a little too heavy, but very easy to live with. The XSR is like a mistress: looks great, not very practical, kind of expensive, maybe a little bit dangerous, but a lot of fun for an hour or two.

I really don't want to hijack this thread, but it makes me sad to hear that. I've been meaning to make my own post explaining why (spoiler) I don't like my TL1000S very much - and I started wondering if maybe what I actually wanted was a DL1000, but I remember general wisdom being that the 650 was the better bike

I rode a wee-strom once. I could see the appeal but I don't need to ride one again. I was very happy to end the ride and get back on my bike.
