Newer water cooled motors have twice the service intervals as the older air cooled. I'd be going for something with a 821 liquid over a 1100 air any day.

821 has 112hp vs 85 for the 1100 (both have same 65 tq)
821 gets a desmo service (with belt) at 15-18,000miles whereas the 1100 gets a desmo service (inspect belt and valves) at 7500miles then a full desmo service (with belt) at 15,000miles.
821 might be cheaper on ins also as it's much less cc's.
Full desmo service will run $800ish private and $1000ish dealer. No idea what the partial service costs but I'd guess it at $500ish.
Other than that full desmo service on say a 821 or similar newer motor you've only got basic maintenance and oil changes which you can do yourself (roll the date back a year in the display menu to delete the service reminder then it just gets reset when you get the desmo service done).
That's just my $0.02 after owning one.

If I didn’t want air cooled 2v, that would have been my choice too.

Those numbers seem off when the M796 is 87 hp 58tq
I see 95hp 76tq didn't realize how little difference there was between the 796 and 1100.

The two motors may have similar torque numbers, but look at the shape of the torque curves:

Taken from here when I was comparing my 821 Hyper to an 1100:

I was originally planning a 1098/1198 swap into my 998, but recently have been considering an 1100 instead as I prefer low RPM torque over a wide range rather than peaky high RPM HP. The bonus is a lighter package, no changing out my coolant for water for track days, and half the number of valves for inspection/adjustment.

That's a 31% increase in torque on the 1100. The 2-Valve motors are all about the torque.
"The Ducati Scrambler 1100 is powered by an 1079cc 2-valve-per-cylinder air-cooled L-twin engine (which is a 90-degree V-twin). It makes a modest amount of power, peaking at 63 kW (86 hp) at 7,500 rpm, and makes peak torque of 88 Nm (65 lb-ft) at 4750 rpm."

OP was looking at a Scrambler so my comparison in power/tq/Maintenance was based on that.

Ok that makes sense I think he was looking at the monsters as well which make more power. I wonder why they neutered the scramblers so much.

Probably money…plus if they’re exactly the same power wise…may cannibalize Monster sales.

Monsters/Hyper's etc only have slightly more power. 90-95hp and 76tq (tq at 6000rpm btw). The dyno graph above is likely a nicely modded motor.

Understood - the 1100 pictured was modified, which is why I said to look at the shape of the curve (meaning not the numbers). Even then, 95 nm is still only about 70 lb ft, so still not far off. Just way more down low and across the range compared to the 821.

Had a chance to ride 2 sweet rides thanks to a kind GTAMer that trusted me with his steeds.

Monster 796
Great fun. Great sound. Good handling, good power.
Always expected the monster to want to tear itself out from under me but power was good and put smiles on my face the whole time.
Cons was ludicrously painful after about 30-40min of riding.
Could be something that’s fixed with a seat…but damn good fun.

KTM Adventure 1190
Holy snap this is tall, and I really struggled with getting on or touching down at lights even with the seat lowered.
Could feel the weight at low speed, but the thing wanted to tear me off above 6000rpm…stupid fun!
Felt more comfortable on it, but felt like I was sitting on a bbq the entire time.

Right now between a Monster and Scrambler…I’d be lying if I wasn’t leaning toward the scrambler. Less oomph, less sound but def more comfortable for longer distance.

But that sexy red frame on the 796…and that sound…

what specifically did you find uncomfortable about the monster? Just the seat?

Not sure, the seat felt ok while riding it. But when I stopped my lower back was killing me.

Could be that I was just not used to it.
Not sure what your budget is but might I suggest

KTMs are very comfy ergonomically.

I have crappy flexibility on my hips (office jobs) and my hip flexors are so tight that i need breaks every 30min if on a supersport regardless of distance or speed. My honda is wider so that makes it even more uncomfortable after 30min compared to my yamaha.

Can you squat ass to grass? If not, possible factor in monster discomfort.
