Bikes with character...

Chat Groups / Forums, not only YouTube. All are a great way to keep you out of a poor purchasing decision. Learn from other's pain instead of experiencing the stress first hand. Certain brands have a reputation for breaking, Ducati, MV Agusta...even Aprilia and not giving a F when your purchase breaks and tying it / you up for the entire season while waiting in line for service and or parts or both. If you are talented enough to do it yourself and have the specialty tools, you'll be on the winning side of Ducati. Most aren't. I'm not alone in my opinion of Ducati, altho they are getting better, the support network is not there. Unless you can wrench, have the knowledge and tools, there are better purchase decisions out there.

Ducati, MV Agusta, even the Aprilia of old = Form over function. I'm wondering in the K5 vs Ducati Panigale video where the K5 came out on top if the bike can actually cook your testicles. Both were reading temps in traffic and those are literally cooking temps. Could you actually cook your jewels on a Duc is a legit question.

The Japanese bikes lack the "character" but they are function over form and they work and they have made sure parts and support are plentiful.

"Character" translates to "problematic" and should be listed in the motorcycle dictionary as such.

The offense rests.

LOL, you realize the people who post on chat groups, forums, and YouTube are a very small percentage of actual customers, right? Pick any brand you like, Japanese or other, and you'll be able to find someone posting negatively about them.

You pulled the engine yet to check the valves?

This guy has the right idea. Tired of fixing the broken SXV he tore the engine out of it and replaced it with a Kawasaki ER6N engine. Now doesn't that just say it all?

The guy formerly known as Mladin.

Yes. It takes all of 30 minutes.

And yes, it says he's an idiot. If he had fixed whatever problem he had properly by someone competent, then he wouldn't constantly be fixing anything.

I ride an FJR, in the city heat is quite unpleasant - I've actually hopped off to get myself away from the inferno for a few minutes. Fortunately, the Japanese designed a great seat with ample insulation -- the boys are protected from the furnace.

I'm sure Ducati did the same thing with their seats. It could just be their customers just don't have as much to protect.

You ever see how people treat GSX-R's? Bouncing off the rev limiter on one wheel. Stunting them to their absolute limits. It's actually shocking that they tolerate this abuse, but they do. 450 lbs smashing down on the front wheel repetitively. It's amazing that a street bike tolerates this...but the Japanese bikes do. There's a reason street squids chose these bikes.

I think I'm going to regret getting involved here.

So Ducati's break because they're junk... but Suzuki (gixxers) break because they're abused?

So when a Japanese bike blows up, it's because the owner abused it, but when a European bike blow's up, it's manufacturer's fault?

EDIT: I see I'm not the only one questioning this thinking.

The RXV / SXV is quite possibly the most unreliable bike ever built...I remember hearing they were dripping oil at press launch and some wouldn't even start. Dark days for Aprilia. If they could have gotten that unicorn sorted, it would have been a bike to buy.

I own a GSX-R 1000 and a Husqvarna 701. I owned the BMW version of the Husqvarna TE / SMR 511 as well which was a nightmare bike just like the SXV.

The 2016 forward Husqvarna 701 are good bikes. The 2017 has the newer motor, shorter stroke. The 2016 has a little more down low than the 2017.Nightmares? I belong to all the Husqvarna 701 forums... what horror stories? Some issues with slave cyls, kickstand switches, front brakes needing bled after storage. All I've done to mine is change the oil. Most of the guys on the forums spend their money modding them out.

This is the "Husqvarna 701" group on Facebook with 54,000 members:

General problems:

Engine cases disintegrating from corrosion (first post):

Worn cam shaft:

So if you've never had any of these problems yourself, then you are proof that just because the internet posts about all these "known issues", that they don't affect everyone. Just like I've never had any of the issues you posted about the Hypermotard.

Well that's a giant load of rubbish.

Triumph got sold and the guy sent me a message not to come because someone horny for it was on their way.

BUT a nice GTAMer let me ride their Scrambler…and wow…I need a higher budget!
Nice to meet you W ... and c'mon it's only $500 and I'll leave the Comp Werkes exhaust on it 'cause you know that sound is "character" right there! 😀

Thoughts on these type of bikes?

while i don't like what that owner has done with it, i love that style.

the 900 is epic too.
kawi has a version
i think the best looking are the husky 701s, hard AF to find one tho.

I want to like them, but the engines look so busy - like they couldn't make up their mind what design aesthetic they wanted to go with.
XS anything is crazy fun but hard pressed to win a beauty contest.

At the end of the day it's like a girlfriend... what attribute matters more to you - crazy fun or beauty?

That's a choice most Yamaha owners have to make.
