Bikes with character...

My CBR250 is to this day one of my faves. Stupid fun and cheap to run, but obviously doesn’t keep up with anything (in my hands anyway).
The 300 engine is a huge step up and above the CBR250 motor. More torque, HP and top end. I’ve ridden a friend’s CBR250, and thought to myself, “is this it? really? how is this possible?” The 300 engine a great… to the point that I’ve been seriously considering trying to find a used one specifically commuting to work. (65km round trip).

I went to see the Monster S2R 1000 yesterday. It was nice. Showed some mileage but clean. Service records from Apex. Needs new tires. And for some reason I had to teach the current owner how to properly latch the tank back down?

Anyway, I lowballed him a bit but he considered it. Said he was waiting for a previous visitor to finalize a higher offer.
It sold last night (not to me)
Thinking of upgrading your Monster already?

Not really that much of an upgrade, but different feeling and character. I kept going back again to look at the ad, I work nearby, so figured I'd go see it.
Alas, the goddess Ducati is a fickle mistress. She deemed me unworthy and fated that it shall belong to another.

No bike. But I’ve heard those things are stupid fun.

It's a shame they discontinued it. They should come out with a supermoto-styled n MT-07 to compete with the 690 SMCR and 701 SM, as well as one based on the MT-03.

Just feel compelled to clarify, a 1 litre 2V air cooled Ducati is no R1. You would be good to 100hp with mods. Torquey though I guess.
A 2 valve 900 makes 79hp on the dyno. My 900 2 valve with big bore kit (944), and a LOT of cylinder head work made a bit over 90hp. They can be made to put out more, but they turn into grenades.

I'm with ya. I was meaning crank hp but I don't have personal experience like you.

I've been following this thread for almost a month, I've read every post on 22 pages, BUT I still have no idea what a "bike with character" is.
Someone want to explain what "character" is?
I've owned and ridden bikes with distinctive characteristics but I always though the "character" was the idiot holding on to the handlebars.

You answered your own question. Some bikes, usually Japanese, do not have any distinctive characteristics. They are practical, perfectly engineered machines that push no boundaries. Like the the CB500x

I believe the first page covered it pretty well.

Owned 4 Ducati's and never had a problem that i couldn't fix myself. Never been stranded. The only problems that my friends in the docc have had were problems they brought into themselves.
But there are lots of issues to learn about on yt. Click click click click click. Lol
Chat Groups / Forums, not only YouTube. All are a great way to keep you out of a poor purchasing decision. Learn from other's pain instead of experiencing the stress first hand. Certain brands have a reputation for breaking, Ducati, MV Agusta...even Aprilia and not giving a F when your purchase breaks and tying it / you up for the entire season while waiting in line for service and or parts or both. If you are talented enough to do it yourself and have the specialty tools, you'll be on the winning side of Ducati. Most aren't. I'm not alone in my opinion of Ducati, altho they are getting better, the support network is not there. Unless you can wrench, have the knowledge and tools, there are better purchase decisions out there.

Ducati, MV Agusta, even the Aprilia of old = Form over function. I'm wondering in the K5 vs Ducati Panigale video where the K5 came out on top if the bike can actually cook your testicles. Both were reading temps in traffic and those are literally cooking temps. Could you actually cook your jewels on a Duc is a legit question.

The Japanese bikes lack the "character" but they are function over form and they work and they have made sure parts and support are plentiful.

"Character" translates to "problematic" and should be listed in the motorcycle dictionary as such.

The offense rests.

I'm not wasting any more time on that guy's videos just to find that what you said isn't exactly true (again). All I know is Ducati has been a great brand for me. I haven't looked back since my first 748 in 2001, and before that bike I never owned anything longer than a year or two. I've had my 998 since 2007. Every brand or model worth riding has issues, so if I based my buying decision solely on what COULD happen, I'd be using public transit. My 2001 M3 has 300,000 kms - no rod bearing issues, not VANOS issues, no subframe issues. My 2007 SXV has close to 30,000 kms - original orange sealant, no rebuilds, starts the way it was designed. My 2002 998 has over 60,000 kms and has been awesome. 2015 Hyperstrada we;ve discussed. I never worried about any of these letting me down, even when riding them into the middle of nowhere.
You pulled the engine yet to check the valves?

This guy has the right idea. Tired of fixing the broken SXV he tore the engine out of it and replaced it with a Kawasaki ER6N engine. Now doesn't that just say it all?

You ever see how people treat GSX-R's? Bouncing off the rev limiter on one wheel. Stunting them to their absolute limits. It's actually shocking that they tolerate this abuse, but they do. 450 lbs smashing down on the front wheel repetitively. It's amazing that a street bike tolerates this...but the Japanese bikes do. There's a reason street squids chose these bikes.
