Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

Never heard of vinfast before. I sure as hell wont be giving them 50k+. Assuming they arent vaporware, the chance they deliver a competent vehicle and stick around to support it are low. Lease maybe.

Some details in their expansion here

Partnerships with Magna Styer, BMW, Pininfarina
Safe to say they're far from vaporware

Will be interesting to see a thorough review when they come out at end of year

You are a little too early for April fools....

I like that it’s a direct to consumer retail model. I think slowly dealerships will start fading as more manufacturers figure they can sell direct to the consumer.

not surprised to hear this, and won't be surprised if the GM ultium is a disaster too.
Personally, I'm tempted to stay with GM over any other maker simply because they've been doing electric longer than anyone else AFAIK. They've got to have patents on a ton of stuff going back to their EV1 days and having now owned a Gen1 and a Gen2 Volt, I'm more than pleased with the product.

Yeah, neither the EV1 nor the Volt took off sales-wise but I truly believe GM was too far ahead of the curve in both cases. As an example, try and get any PHEV these days - they're all in high demand and does anyone YET offer an electric-only range that the Gen2 Volt does 6 years after Gen2 was introduced? I don't believe so.

tesla raised prices for all of their models. right after i picked mine up :).

the biggest thing I noticed with EV vs ICE:
I drive pretty aggressively and like to accelerate hard whenever I can.
The ev torque and throttle response I knew to expect, also the lack of sound (character). But without sound, the main takeaway for me is that I can floor it all the time and not feel like I'm doing anything bad (to the engine or to others).
ICE Non-performance vehicles, noises when you push them that kind of makes you hesitate to repeat. Performance vehicles make noises that attract unwanted attention.
just my 2cs so far.

obligatory tesla picture.

There are quite a few US states (not sure about Canada) where there are bans on selling directly to customer.

The issue is that they can't go gradual. Toyota tried this years ago in a few markets. People would take the slightly lower quote from the website and ask the dealers to match. Made those dealers angry who were paying for marketing, supply chain etc.

It's not too different from other consumer products, say motorcycle gear, where they have to artificially inflate their website price so that they don't undercut their distributors. Having a distribution network does have some value. I would be hesitant to buy a vehicle that is too complex/dangerous/warranty voiding for me to service AND also has no dealer network.

Straight to Princess Auto after picking it up eh? 😄
Nice colour man!

I see one of the big US brokerage firms downgraded GM stock mentioning their EV approach - it's taken a bit of a hit.

You mean this? Makes some great points

Oh, the hypocrisy.

Anyhow, on a different note, last weeks weather warmup let me do my annual spring test on battery longevity. Happy to report that my terribly engineered POS Volt (/s) at now 11 years of age....exceeded it's factory battery rating by 4km still, even in less than ideal conditions.

Thank Doug for that. Deco makes the stickers on your Volt batteries.
