Another Mike Holmes Stinker (Meaford)

Dude can't get himself employed he's gotta roll with the punches

Fine and dandy except when getting hired at the company I work for is a bit of a big deal not only from a money standpoint, but especially a benefits, pension, and most importantly, work life balance standpoint when compared to the rest of the industry.

And I've seen us go 3-5+ years without hiring again.

It's like seeing a winning 6/49 ticket with your name on it in the office window, but you're not allowed to cash it, because contract, penalties, yadda yadda.

As someone who spent a few years as a perma-temp at a company 25 years ago, a company that shirked a lot of responsibilities and avoided a lot of "hassles" (ie basic legal responsibilities and decency) of being a direct employer by just employing literally every single person who worked there through a litany of different driver services at the time (when there was a lot more of them out there than there is now), and got screwed a few times because of it over those years, I have no love lost for these rent a driver agencies.

If you can’t get hired full time as a truck driver right now , it’s either because you can’t actually drive ( not a deal breaker) or your a complete idiot ( not a complete deal breaker either) . I’m not sure I’ve ever seen so many driver wanted signs in my life . If you’re reasonably skilled and can read ( and understand ) paperwork you can pick your job .

True. For year's we have used a private trucking company to move our stuff around the GTA. The owner just tossed in the towel, and said he can make a lot more money as a driver than an owner/operator. As a bonus, the trucking company bought his truck from him for $20K over market value.

Getting hired at a *good* company that constitutes being considered a long term/forever career job vs getting hired at a bottom feeder company that treats you like a disposable warm bum in the seat are two very different things in this industry. And in the last 10-15 years the number of bottom feeder companies out there have ballooned exponentially.

In short, yeah, there's a lot of positions open, especially as the current generation retires and there's not enough people going into the trade anymore, but there's also a ton of total **** jobs. This industry is its own worst enemy a lot of the time.

The 6 months thing is the issue. When my company hires on a very rare occasion (usually only retirements), they need to hire asap. If they have a guy who's been working for us long enough (even just 3-4 weeks) to know that they're a good fit whatever while filling on on a vacation replacement, and a spot opens up, they need to fill it *today*. Not 5 months from now. And they're not gonna pay a 5 month penalty when there's other candidates out there. So dude gets ******.

Legally.. The temp can quit the agency on Friday and be hired by the company on Monday.
Not the best practise on the company's part.. but neither is holding temps for 6 months.
The 6 month thing is law.. but not typically these days. Your HR or whoever deals with the agency needs to renegotiate..

Like I said, all fine and dandy until you desperately need a temp driver a week later and that same driver agency won't answer your calls anymore, or conveniently says they "have nobody available", because they have quietly blackballed your company.

Have seen it happen. Particularly problematic when they are the only game in town as is the case in many areas now.

It's like pushing your rights in a petty fashion at work sometimes. Sure, you'll probably win, but your name ends up on the fridge for the next month or two.

Heard another AGM commercial today offering "free home inspections", which of course the commercial strongly suggests you absolutely positively need if your home is 10 years old, because scary problems of course.

Who wants to bet that every single one of these inspections finds "major problems that need to be addressed immediately"?

Of course, if it's a Mike Holmes house, that's actually possible, but my $20 is every home has a "problem" that can only be fixed with a major renovation.

I had to scream at a friend when he told me he OKed a company to test his water (Mississauga). It's free and they give me an Atlas. It's a con. They run a glass of water and put in a drop of something that turns the water pink showing that it's polluted. It's just red dye.

Good news is this seems to be going in his favour. Fingers crossed.

Was approached in a Home Depot Mississauga store by a guy wearing the Home Depot apron, soliciting for a "free water purity test".
Almost fell for it 'cos of the Home Depot apron and it being in a Home Depot store - is Home Depot that broke to resort to this scam?

What corporation has turned down a chance at super high margins? Last I checked, every HD has ultrasonic rodent resellers. Those cost nothing and do nothing constructive.

Any Black Aprons are not HD employees. They are vendors/contractors shelling for that particular product/service that have been 'authorized' by HD. Beware the Black Apron !!

When you rent out your reputation without due care expect some negative feed back.

We don't need a go-fund-me for MH.

If I recall right.. there were posts on here some time ago.. a member had issues with the Mike Holmes inspection company.
