Another Mike Holmes Stinker (Meaford)

Speaking of Holmes-pushed businesses, anyone heard anything on AGM Renovations with the Russian (I assume) guy?

Edit: found this on Reddit

My buddy knows the owner of AGM renovations. Said its a 1 man show with nothing more than contractors that he dispatches in/out to jobs.
There's a guy like that here in east end T.O.
I've used him a couple of times and seems reputable.

And takes a cut of every job ... nice gig!

Probably not that hard to set up , find a dozen or so Kijiji Carpenters and make a deal .

I used to work for a renovator, years ago. We had several guys like that that got jobs for us. They are salesmen. That's all. They get the contract, then find people to do the work.

Problem isn't getting the deal. Problem is getting the job done properly.

Alright, I need to get off my *** with this new venture. Weekend I'm going to do an ad blast in the area for dad's and mine business. F it.

I don't expect much initial take anyway, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Brother and I did work for friends , decks fences , ceramic backsplashes ,change toilets and fixtures , anytime somebody saw us we got offers for work. We weren’t looking for work , but could be busy all the time . There is a huge shortage of ‘ trustable’ sub contractors.

50+ years ago I met a cute little thing but the relationship never went anywhere. Decades latter I ran into a guy that turned out to be her cousin and I got the full story. Cute little thing's father was a truck driver in the construction industry but got laid off.

With his time off he decided to replace his sidewalk on Fenmar Street. A neighbour asked him if he would do his as well. Things escalated. Now the laid off truck driver's sons go to Arizona to buy cars at auctions.

I go to the supermarket to buy Arizona iced tea.

Hang in there MP, that vintage Porsche is just around the corner.

Thanks. My goal is very simple...if I can make another $1k/month after expenses...I'd be VERY happy.

I don't think that's impossible or overly optimistic...but it won't happen overnight.

Reminds me of driver service in my line of work. "Hire" people with no guarantee of work, when a company calls a needs a driver for the day, dispatch whatever driver answers the phone that day to job placement. Pocket $20-$40/hour after what you bill vs what you pay the driver.

To add insult to injury, lock said driver into a contract so that they can't get hired by any of these companies if they get into a nice placement and the company would actually like to hire them permanently, so these poor soulds get stuck in perma-temp hell sometimes. Yes, it's legal, and yes, I've seen people lose out on an amazing potential career jobs because their stupid driver service wanted $10-20K or more to "break their contract" and let that company actually hire them.

Anyhow, that AGM place has always come across as skeevy to me. What really turned me off was the commercials they were running last summer where they were outwardly claiming that if your bathroom was "over 10 years old" (or something in that rediculously low range) that it was somehow an impeding disaster and were strongly suggesting it was urgent you get a completely new bathroom. Their current latch onto Mike Holmes, in light of all that nonsense, doesn't help their case.

Yep, same here.

Convert your new shed into a garden suite.

My kid did a spoof on Facebook a while back, he was inundated with offers. Even had a couple of realtors try to get into listing action.

No temp driver service is making that much from their drivers... maybe in a rare example from many years ago.. but certainly not in today's market.
The mark-ups are typically 35-50% on top of the pay rate.. from that comes employee burdens, insurances, etc... the agency doesn't make anywhere near what you think it does.
It is absolutely illegal to prevent a temp from being hired to a full time position.. it is illegal to ask a temp to sign a contract that tries to limit the person being hired somewhere... never mind trying to enforce it.
The temp agency may have a something in the contract with the company that they are assigned to work at, but those are also unenforceable
Temp contracts typically state the temp can be hired after 3 months... the fee for hiring the temp early is equivalent to the fee for the remainder of the 3 months.

Not sure about the wage cut percentage anymore (although it used to be very hefty, I know of companies charging $50/hr to the employer yet paying the employee $25, so hey), but the contracts are still very much a thing. Legal or not (which I guess we'd both have to find legal citations for), they're a thing - my own company lamented about it just a few years ago as there was someone they wanted to hire but didn't want to pay the buyout.

I suppose if one kicked up a fuss about it they might be able to break that deal or whatever, but good luck next time you need a rent-an-employee and that agency has blackballed you and won't answer your calls, and they're the only place in town.

Law changes in 2017...

Agencies can not charge or restrict temps from being hired full-time.
Agency can not charge the client company a fee for hiring a temp directly after 6 months of the temp working there..

The 6 months thing is the issue. When my company hires on a very rare occasion (usually only retirements), they need to hire asap. If they have a guy who's been working for us long enough (even just 3-4 weeks) to know that they're a good fit whatever while filling on on a vacation replacement, and a spot opens up, they need to fill it *today*. Not 5 months from now. And they're not gonna pay a 5 month penalty when there's other candidates out there. So dude gets ******.

Its a give-and-take thing. Dude can't get himself employed he's gotta roll with the punches.

I worked with a few temp places that had pretty slim margins -- they were making $3/hr off unskilled labour. Most of their staff had an issue with full-time employment, either they were not able to get through an interview or they had attendance or workplace issues that kept them in the dead pool.
