Yes, I have free time, sometimes - other times I'm running around in circles (literally). It's the nature of my job. I'm fully aware of what the management does -comes in to kill time and get away from his wife. I have not seen management do a single thing to bring any work in to the business in 12 years.......although he did write his and his wife's recent vacation to China off as a business trip. Again, I don't care. Just don't tell me "we're" going broke.

If they are the owners and take all the risk to keep the bills paid then they can work as little or as much as they like. If they are telling you the company is going broke then they are idiots and you should leave.
but sounds like a good deal for you, decent pay, free time, and you get to gossip.:D

There haven't been any risks in 25+ years. Because of the skills of the employees (who do the actual work), there is a consistent+loyal customer base. The business pretty much chugs along in spite of itself.

You equate free time with slacking. If I'm working the business isn't running at (theoretically*) 100%. If I have free time it is, and I have to wait until it stops running at 100% to do more work to bring it back up to 100%. Lather, rinse, repeat.

* theoretically - the business could run better if the management spent money on maintaining the existing equipment/consumables to the minimum industry standards instead of fixating on having the latest Android smartphone (that he hasn't got a clue how to use) to give the impression that he's a mover/shaker COO. I do the best with the hand I'm dealt.

go to him with a business plan to improve the business and profits. Or go out and start your own and take the clients from these people you think can't run a business .

I used to work for meaner and leaner(by comparison) mom+pop companies until I joined the Sheet Metal union. People think union workers are slackers.
This thing with the equipment and consumables boggles the mind. At current job site the company payroll is roughly $150,000/week. 2 or 3 people in management have made it their mission to take the axiom "penny wise, pound foolish to the nth degree. A job cannot proceed efficiently without tools and consumables. We're going down the toilet fast.
I wonder what happened at Heinz.

Sonny you're delusional. I don't think you know how "most" work places function. There is plenty of "middle men" and waste all around when it comes to work places.
People get annoyed when money is ****** away on ignorance and at the same time the boss tells them "sorry no raise, there's no money". Meanwhile their nephew has a job at the company where he does absolutely nothing, well not nothing, makes the people's lives who actually do work more difficult.

It's hard to say who's bullshitting, because both Sonny and FullMoto are speaking vaguely, dancing around what they do without really providing enough info to really back their side up.

I mean, I don't blame either of them, because staying employed and not risking your business is more important than making points on some random forum.

But the discussion is kinda useless. Maybe Sonny's experiences apply to the rest of us, maybe they don't. Maybe FullMoto should leave and take the clients with him, or maybe that's not possible for legal or other reasons. I really couldn't tell you, based on what's been said so far.

I have no problem saying what I do. I program, set-up, and run WEDM machines. If you understand what WEDM is, you'll understand why I have free time at work, especially with the current CAD/CAM software. What used to take hours to program back in the dark ages (the 80s) now takes minutes.

Details don't matter. The general culture needs to change on both sides. I know why my company withholds tools and consumables. Because we would steal them.

I run and own a business 100 percent....with 1000's of clients and 25 employees but I'm delusional on how most work places function...ok!

With all due respect, I don't see the problem that FMJ has. He gets paid ok, gets lots of free time at work & gets to drink beer at lunch. Maybe I need to be in his shoes to fully understand.

You just can't have it all

Many kinds of middlemen. But usually they are thought of as distribitors or sales that take a commision.

This is silly. Everyone loves to rag on sales people.

Remember, without sales people, no one else would be employed!

All you have to do is read his post on the matter. It's all there.

In this thread: People that run a business and people that THINK they know how to run a business. It's all about perspective and everyone only sees what they want to see.

not so much the retail sales end
way more at the distributor level
lots of sweetheart deals and/or protected territory
how else would it be that as a small business i can buy at retail Canadian made products in the US for less than Canadian wholesale price?
savvy customers see the US pricing then come in to my shop and think that I'm way overpriced
makes retailing in Canada a little challenging to say the least
