Another hit to our economy.....

Sounds like the word you want is jealousy and or ignorance if your comment is about what you feel and not
reality

I don't really understand that comment. Cost to my employer is 100%. Of that I probably put less than half into my jeans after everybody's siphoned off their share. I don't know how jealousy or ignorance plays into that unless you're talking about the profit my employer makes. But that couldn't be it because you're not that stupid. So what is it?

edit, the last thing I begrudge is my employer to make a profit and I want the company to flourish

I almost always believe in less government intervention, however, here I think it is needed. Wage equalizing import duties should be put in place. If the average Canadian wage is $20/hr and the average in China is $2/hr, then slap everything that comes in with a 1000% import duty. Take the proceeds and give them out as business grants/loans here.
Perfect recipe to start a trade war. And a trade war between us and China; we lose!

ypu get about half and the employer pays all the expenses out of his half. So the word you were looking for to describe you was greedy then?

i employ 25 people. The biggest expense I can't do much about is rent. Only due to the fact most of my employees take the subway and I have to be on the yonge line with underground access or I will have some unhappy highly skilled highly paid people. Everything else is pretty cheap or reasonable to run the business. Can you outsource or move and get wages and rent for a lot cheaper? Yes but for me the business would be inferior. For other companies who just manufacture a product such as ketchup they can do that anywhere in the world and therefore will find a cheaper spot to do it. Free market competition unfortunately benefits some and hurts others. That's life

Curious as to what is highly paid and what they manufacture?

You're making me read between the lines here. I know who's "side" you're on so I'll take your comment in that context until further notice. I'm on both sides. I want to flourish. I want my employer to flourish. I'm talking about third party syphoning off of the both of us. This comes in many forms. I better stop now before somebody calls me Captain Obvious. "Greedy" gimme a break.

Paid more than competitors by a large margin, bonuses and benefits as well as unlimited vacation as long as it doesn't affect their work. We dont manufacture we are a professional office

What middle men

I think the situation Bernie is aluding to is similar to mine (and a lot of other people). There are 5 people on the payroll where I work. In order of $alary: President, Vice President, Shop Manager, employee, and Office Manager. Of the 5, the only one's that actually do billable work are the Shop Manager and employee. The President comes in 4 hours a day (to get away from the Vice President, for the most part). His duties involve reading his email+watching anti muslim videos his friends send him, Skyping his friends (on the employee's work computer), and walking around bitching about profits (we're actually swamped with work at the moment). The Vice President shows up once a month to look at the number at the bottom of the page. The Office Manager is there for half days, and spends half of those on the phone to family+friends, doing paperwork for a second job, or trying to win some CFRB $$$ contest online. So in a nutshell, 65% of the company's wages are going to non-functional or partially functional employees. Do I care? Not a lot. My cheque's never bounced, and it's a reasonable number on it. Just don't tell me the company can't afford consumables to keep the business going or perks that were agreed upon as wage incentives upon employment. I'm not as dumb as I look. I know where all the money's going.

The reason why most of these plant closures are happening (and all foreign outsourcing) is to maximize profit for the shareholders. A long time ago, companies had a sense of community - that they were part of the community and had some responsibility toward that community. That era is gone, for the most part. Corporate greed is now firmly entrenched and they care about nothing but money. Money has become the new god, and our society will pay dearly for it. The race to the bottom is accelerating and income inequality in society is becoming a vexing problem - the question now becomes - what can we do about it?

well you work at a poorly run business with lazy management or you have no idea what they do to keep the company running. Also, you seem to have a lot of free time to monitor what everyone else is doing at their job. So overall the company seems to lack in productivity everywhere

Yes, I have free time, sometimes - other times I'm running around in circles (literally). It's the nature of my job. I'm fully aware of what the management does -comes in to kill time and get away from his wife. I have not seen management do a single thing to bring any work in to the business in 12 years.......although he did write his and his wife's recent vacation to China off as a business trip. Again, I don't care. Just don't tell me "we're" going broke.
