Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

In my area, South Frontenac, it doesn't matter. Decks are specifically called out for permits, independent of size. So you can build a 10 X 10 outbuilding without a permit, but a 5 X 5 deck requires a permit. As you mentioned, contact your municipality.

    Can-Am bikes are back!

Yes. Commercial use definitely voided the warranty.

    Can-Am bikes are back!

I used to work for Bombardier before they sold that division. I spoke with some engineers that had worked on their four-wheeler design in the early days. They told me that they designed to the bare minimum and didn't worry about warranty claims. They figured that most people only used them...

    The city life is tough

You'd need to pay me some incredible money to move from my place (north of Kingston) to Toronto. 1/2 hour commute on country roads, then along the lake for a bit. I literally can shoot deer from my back deck (I don't, but I do shoot them from the property across the road). Retiring this year...

    Water Filtration Systems for Home

We're in the bush and used Caduceon labs here in Kingston. They are a laboratory, and don't sell treatment, so they have no horse in the race when they tell you what you need to fix your water. Looks like they have a lab in Richmond Hill.

    Maple Syrup Boil Time

I've got two tapped. I'm retiring this year, so next year I plan to run a pipeline up the hill behind the house and get a bunch more. I'll drain it into a 200 gallon tank on a trailer and either set up a proper boiler or take it to my neighbour to use his setup.

    more tech we don't need

My Dad had a special sharpener for blue blades. You'd put them in, and turn the handle a few times to hone the edge. I tried it and went back to regular safety blades after that.

    Think you're having a bad day ?

Yeah, they probably do. I'll ask my buddy next time I'm in contact. He stayed there until retirement a few years ago. You always needed to watch what you asked for with management. Just when I was leaving, one guy got something in his eye and complained that CN should have given us safety...

    Think you're having a bad day ?

I always carried a pocketful of spares. You also learned how to use a pair of lineman's pliers to do just about anything. If you dropped them, you were heading down to get them, or if you were lucky, you had a buddy on the ground to throw them back up. Sucked when they fell in several feet of...

    Think you're having a bad day ?

When I worked for the railway in northern Alberta we had many days that started at -50 and warmed to -40. We tried to keep most of the work in the shop or surrounding area working large pieces where you could stay fully dressed, but some jobs had to be done, no matter the weather. We were...

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Get this book and read it. Piles of good information and it might help you determine if it's cost effective to go ahead. Of particular interest might be table 25 where it says what kind of studs can be used to support walls. For exterior walls "Roof with or without attic storage plus one...

What's a good ultrasonic cleaning solution for carbs

I use Decon 75, which is a lab detergent. Then a couple of water rinses and rotate through different solvents to make sure everything is dry. Working in a chemistry lab makes this easy.

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

I did something similar, but ended up in the drywall. I was "how is this floor and plate so thick?". I built it and I should be into air by now. Stopped and went upstairs to see a little bulge in the drywall. Regarding MPs wiring. I did mine differently, but I did have a green field. I...

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Fairly common. The fridge wants to maintain the temperature around 4 as previously stated. If the temperature is sensed to be less than 4, it just doesn't turn on. The fridge control is what also cools the freezer, so that also doesn't get cooling, but it slowly warms up to ambient, maybe +2...

Been stuck in the same spot at 404/401 for 30 mins

Yeah. Makes me feel like an idiot that I thought it might be something like a lawn tractor and needed to be thawed out.
