Working out! Fitness! Nutrition!

Powerlifters and Oly. Lifters train for strength .... they are strong and most are at least pretty big.

Bodybuilders train for size and looks ..... they are big and most are at least pretty strong. (I'm in this camp, I'm not a powerlifter).

Crossfitters try to train for everything, and most are mediocre at everything........this is why I make fun of them and will continue to make fun of them. Their only saving grace is that some of their women are hot.

Why make fun of anyone? Everyone trains for different goals. CrossFit is definitely not specialization, and is an attempt to be as all-rounded as possible. I've used it in the past to reach some specific fitness goals, and it worked well for me.

I've seen many amazingly fit people at the xfit gyms I've been to. I can't say I've seen much that was mediocre (other than myself in many instances, lol).

Just out of curiosity, what were these goals?

I agree that whatever gets you working out is good. If crossfit gets you excited and actually working out whereas regular resistance training and cardio would bore you to death and cause you to quit working out than I guess go ahead and do crossfit. Most women are afraid to touch weights (which is stupid) so at least it gets more women to actually lift. HOWEVER, most people would reach their fitness goals faster and SAFER doing resistance training and good ol' cardio (if they can stick to it).

One of the biggest things that bothers me about crossfit is that they take olympic lifts, which are very technical, and focus on speed vs technique. Oly. Lifters practice their technique to death since when performing the motions with heavy weights any mistake will lead to a failed lift, or worse, injury. Crossfiters take those same lifts and perform them as fast as possible with sloppy form. This seems like a recipe for injury and is actually really painful for me to watch.

The other thing that bothers me about crossit is the amount of money some of these gyms charge for what is essentially a gym to do glorified circuit training with some Oly. Lifts thrown in.

I have a lot of friend that do cross fit, its like a cult. They look down on anyone who doesn't do it, drives me nuts. Ive tried it a couple of times and could never get into it, good old fashion gym is still my choice.

I get you!
I myself hate weights, so im going to get into old school calisthenics (sp!!?) to redo my foundation and build strength slowly but surely.
Still going to do boxing though, but adding this on top. Who knows, maybe after building some more strength ill start liking weights?

It's marketted similarly to how Apple marketed their products. Crossfit brought absolutely ZERO new to the table as far as training is concerned. They took a bunch of things from other disciplines, combined them, slapped a fancy name on it, and put an inflated price tag on it under the premise of "hey, this gym is Crossfit certified so, it's better!". Kind of like how apple charges higher prices for the same products, because, hey, trust us, it's Apple, so it must be better. I bet it attracts a very similar clientele too.

There's a crap load of guys up here on base that wear there "crossfit" t-shirts pretty much all the time.

It was quite the rage around here a few years ago, but now it's not part of our PT program due to the risk of injury. Still allowed to do it on your own time, but since it's not for everyone and there are people that don't have a clue, we can't do it for group PT.

I can however, see the use of a program like that. A mountain of muscle can be a liability when it's 50+ out, wearing over 100lbs of gear and "Mr. Protein" hasn't trained his body to be walking all day in the sun like that... Those boys just become more weight for someone to carry out when they go down from dehydration. It's better to be well rounded in a job like mine than to be just big.
I had a dude overseas that was massive. I told him if he goes down and unable to get his *** out of there, we would have to BIP him. (Blow in Place). Obviously it's a joke, but man it would have sucked to carry him through a grape field and over walls if he wasn't ambulatory.

"Crossfit" is a just a convenient marketing label (which Reebok seems to be in on now). I get that some people benefit from it and a lot of people respond to the environment of a crossfit gym and I think thats great but some of the principles/practices are dangerous no-no's. I get that it sort of started somewhat paying homage to old school weight lifting but with the competition element of it now in place, its sort of veered of that course.

A lot of crossfitters just train to do more "crossfit" so they want to be awesome at double unders or kipping muscle ups... Like, why all the kipping? I was watching one of the competitions and those kipping muscle ups on rings just look like shoulder injuries waiting to happen. And doing speed/rep trails for Olympic powerlifting moves is just a dangerous idea since form goes out the window when you start getting tired. Going to failure on those is just not smart.

This is the one argument for crossfit that I can't debunk:

Really can't argue with this lol. A lot of chicks pretty much have the ideal bodies IMHO.

I was struggling to pass the physical testing for policing in Ontario (PREP test). Crossfit was the only thing got me through it. My overall cardio improved (with no running, yay!), my leg strength improved, and muscular endurance improved. I'm not saying that I couldn't have gotten these results in a different manner, but at the time it's what I used and it worked. TBH, I had been training for a long time in a traditional gym with a resistance and cardio program that just wasn't cutting it. Crossfit in a way put it all together for me, and could almost simulate the test in a sense.

I respect your criticisms because I know you know your stuff. As for risk of injury - that's definitely a possibility, but it's up to each individual to monitor their form and ensure they aren't rushing through the lifts. I know that the xfit gyms I attended were nazis about proper form and technique.

All in all, I don't do Crossfit anymore. It helped me reach some goals, but I didn't ultimately *enjoy* it. Now I train in martial arts, and it's something that keeps me active while pretending to be a ninja. :p

You should come and workout and see the numbers some guys are putting up. Your mind would be changed. But your scared I get it:p

you have no idea what you are talking about. Come and do an Olympic lifting session and you will see technique beyond anything you know. The trainers where I go all constantly go to Olympic and power lifting seminars to learn more and more. Don't be such a know it all and wimp. Come and try. On me

That could be said of any gym. Go to the right place and it will be different. Again, come to where I go on me. Your mind will be changed. You have no clue

Is it an Olympic lifting gym or a crossfit gym? I have a lot of respect for Oly. Lifters already so if it's an Oly. gym I'm not really sure what you're trying to change my mind about. I don't think their workouts would be optimal for my goals but I'm sure most of these guys would smoke me in strength. Which gym is this?

Quoted just so that everyone can see them again. :D:happy2:

It's too bad that so many women are afraid of lifting weights and putting some grunt into it. These women look A-MAZINGLY hot!

It's CrossFit Newmarket central. They really know their stuff. Technique is number 1. What I'm saying is CrossFit places aren't all where technique sucks and everyone is getting injured. This place is run by good people who take the time to learn and teach, they go to Olympic lifting seminars and other seminars and pass that info on to the clients. I have never been injured, am 43 as I said, my dead lift is approaching 400 with no straps, FRONT squat last Friday was 270. The way they teach works.
