Working out! Fitness! Nutrition!

RE: meal frequency - in case you are interested in the debate about meal frequency. Lyle MacDonald I think does a good job on the topic in this article. I think he takes an unbiased approach to it.

RE: Post workout window - I for one do not think of this period as a myth. I think there is merit here so I agree with Taleb. For me, I don't do the PWO shake, instead my post workout meal is my biggest meal of the day. Calorie & protein wise its about 50% of my daily intake in one meal.... As you can imagine, its my favorite meal of the day!

Good read regarding meal frequency. I agree with the points. I don't think eating more will get you leaner.

I do however think that frequent healthy meals will keep you going... Prevents cortisol (cortisol is a hormone that works against testosterone) this in return will put on fat. Also frequent meals will give you the energy you need to be active and not just want to sit and be lazy. Also from personal experience for people who are already fit, the more the frequent the meal is, the more physically "pumped" you will look.

So yes, frequent meals does not mean you will lose weight. However, will better assist you in achieving your goals when combined with all the other important things.

k, so I'm back with another question if you guys don't mind: is nutrition/rest just as important when you're putting on mass vs. toning down? My friend and I both hit the gym just as hard, but we have different goals. We were trying to figure it out earlier, but from what we were discussing, it looks like either answer's just as plausible.

---------------------

I also have a funny story for you guys: I was working out earlier and a group of 5 guys came in. You know the type: foreign dudes who find the need to talk really loudly while they all work out together. One of them has his hair slicked back, is wearing a tight dress shirt, jeans, and reebok pumps (lolololol). They're in decent shape, with the slick-back dude being the alpha male of the pack. So this guy makes it his mission to spot all of his friends in between their sets.

I'm doing skullcrushers and I see this guy spotting his friend doing push-ups! I nearly dropped my weight and I looked crazy laughing to myself. Dude was sitting on his friend while pulling the guy up. hahahaha.

I can't tell if what's funnier: how gay it looks or the fact that it defeats the purpose (but then again, maybe it was the guy on top who was working out and the guy doing the push up was supposed to be his weight).

If you're looking to achieve any kind of goal, nutrition and rest are vital IMO. Put the effort in at the gym, but make sure you put the effort in outside of the gym.

Nutrition is very important for both but what that nutrition consists of is different. If you are trying to tone or cut down then reduce calories and eat the most nutritionally quality foods (that really goes for both but bulking you can get away with more cheating). The only way to gain mass is the eat big and lift hard (well non chemical way). Eat lots of protein but don't forget to get in the proper balance of fats and carbs as many people get too protein obsessed and forget the other building blocks.

I know a few posts have knocked protein shakes but for me having a busy life there is no easier way to get a hit of low cal protein as a mid day snack. Its just easy and convenient to keep under your desk or in a gym bag.

I go through phases where i work out religiously for 4 or 5 months.. then something happens to make me fall out of the routine and i stop for 2 or 3 months and lose all my progress.

I used to be the same way, but I think it's finally gonna be consistent for me this year. Saw some dude that was at the point that I want to be at and it took him 3 years to get there. I used to go 3-4 months straight and then exams would hit and I'd have a month off. I signed up at goodlife which has 24 hour days, so now I have no excuse not to go/miss a day. I just wish the hours weren't so damn useless on weekends so I could push for 4 times a week.

BTW, thanks for answering my questions, guys. This place is such a great resource. If anyone else is looking to get into it, I have a full-body routine that's split into 3 days which is pretty well-balanced (still working out the few kinks/exercises to have it perfectly balanced). I'd be happy to post it for anyone looking to get into it.

Can anyone recommend a good gym that has a wide variety of weights and is not crowded? I am currently signed up with LA Fitness at Don Mills and it get's way too crowded at time where you have to wait 5 minutes or more for a bench. Somewhere in Scarborough would be good.

The Goodlife at Kennedy Rd and Ellesmere isn't that busy most of the time. The free weight area is larger than most gyms. It's pretty ghetto, though...if you can handle that. ;)

Which Goodlife you going to be working out at? Might be moving to a 24/7 Goodlife.....Bloor X Islington......you?
Pretty far from there... I'm signed up at the parkview goodlife (by dvp & eglinton). Not sure it'd be worth the commute for this location, though. It's one of the crappier locations - I only chose it because membership was cheaper since it's in flemo :laughing8:

If you go during normal hours, try venice fitness on warden just north of st. clair. They have all the weights/machines that you'll ever need and you'll probably never be waiting. IIRC, the membership isn't too far off from YMCA's rates.

I do the same thing! In my case it's usually injuries that put me out (clumsy drunk, always hurting myself.) lol

I was out for alittle more then 6 months with a dislocated knee cap, just got into working out a couple of months ago. Being out that long makes you feel like you are starting out brand new, kinda sucks.

i wouldnt recommend this gym until you actually walk in. It has to be the sloppiest gym layout i have ever seen. It is like they rented out 3 adjacent office spaces, opened the doors to each and put some equipment in there. It is small too...I joined premier fitness on islington but they are now in the process of moving to queensway and kipling so i am waiting for that

Just started 28 days of Paleo and I have to say, reading all the info, my mind is actually blown.

Will update at the end of July and let you know how it went.

Did you end up doing the Chin Picnic thing? If so, how did you do?

Yea I did... Placed Top 5... 15 finalists made it on stage. Good times.. Just collecting all the media pics and vids I can find.. Once I do I'll post it.
