Why do so many ghetto people smoke?

Funny, I smoke. Yet I've owned my own property since my mid-20's and I have a better education than 99% of the people on this forum. I'm not saying that to be offensive or insulting, but I doubt there are too many people here who've been in a Doctorate Program. I hardly qualify as "ghetto."

No one is saying only ghetto people smoke, just that it appears to be more common amongst people with low SES (as knowledge put it).

You'll be surprise how many ppl here who post are much educated that u though. Just because they talk crap doesn't me they are not educated.

That's impossible! She's too smart to be misinterpreting the premise of this thread!! :-)

And I live in the ghetto and don't smoke. OMG

RockerGuy, I had to read this twice to understand what the heck you were trying to say. You should take up smoking. Calms the nerves.

I am a social smoker

I would have thought reading comprehension would be part of that education, I guess not

How many smokers do you see and automatically assume they're "ghetto" because they smoke?

As for SES, which I will assume refers to socio-economic status (basic sociological term), educational attainment is part of that basic equation. If you are in fact actually interested in correlations between substance use and socio-economic status, I could hook you up with some current research for kicks and giggles. A good place to start just for the heck of it would be Bourdieu's (1979) "Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste." He looks at everything from substance use to genres of music and applies it to 'classes' of people. What's most notable about it is how "tastes" shift amongst classes over time. E.g., in his research listening to Jazz music denoted lower class. But by today's standards, Jazz appreciation denotes higher class. The same goes for substance use. Smoking cigarettes was once in vogue, but by today's standards is 'morally' unacceptable and linked to a particular 'class' of individuals. An example applied to this topic in particular would be the moral entrepreneur movement and the anti-tobacco lobby. Peter Berger (a well known social constructionist who I admire a lot) has actually done a lot of research into this particular topic. Howard Becker, another awesome social constructionist actually coined the term, moral entrepreneur. His work is also great reading.

None, as I didn't say that in my original post or any subsequent posts.

I suppose I could have said, "a lot of ghetto people are smokers, but not all smokers are ghetto"

Next time I will be more clear for you. But hey, you did jump at the chance to talk yourself up, and did you ever nail it. Bravo.

I think this is the most words Kellen have ever typed

From your initial post it certainly sounded like a judgement call on smokers 'as' ghetto. I smoke. I'm going to defend myself.

Now why did I waste my time bothering to make reading suggestions? I don't think you're actually interested in any research surrounding this. Like I said, I think you're just making generalized appraisals about people based on a single thing you don't like.

Where is the judgement call that smokers are ghetto?

Clearly there is a significantly larger percentage of smokers among the ghetto population compared to the population as a whole.

Maybe you are a little sensitive about feeling a little ghetto when you smoke.
