Why Android is better than iPhone.

Can anyone recommend a smart phone for my parents? I need them to do business related activities and the flip phones won't do it anymore. They never had a smart phone before.

I'm thinking of giving them my note 2 and getting them a galaxy s4... is that overkill?

Google Nexus 5 will be landing here anyday now.

Only $349US to buy outright with no contract!!, for an unlocked phone with top drawer specs and the purest form of Android experience without all the bloatware garbage Samsung likes to put on their phones. It also features the latest Android 4.4 KitKat OS.

Quadcore snapdragon 800 processor, 5" 1080p display, Gorilla Glass 3, 13mp cam, 2gigs ram, 2700mAh battery

They will sell a tonne of these.

I would recommend getting them vanilla android devices (Nexus series). Reason being, no confusing bloatware, very bare bones OS, and it will be updated with the latest hotfixes and security updates. For example, you can get a new Samsung Galaxy Nexus for $150-$200. Install/enable accessibility features (if your folks need it) that include, larger Icons, fewer icons, and overall simpler interface than simply looking at a screen full of apps.

Show them the 3-4 icons they'll use most, put that on the main screen, and let them play with the phones. Phone, Messaging, Email and Camera (maybe maps) and you're set. What more would they need?

I've done this for a few of my folks' friends and once they got used to it, they like it.

32GB version is $399 US.

I understand the expandable storage, but are replaceable batteries really needed? how many people (outside of tech geeks) carry 2 batteries with them? or that you know have had to swap out their batteries? (current S4 recall not withstanding).

At this price. Who cares. Iphone is $719 and doesn't have those. And it doesn't have a 5" screen, 1080p display, nfc, and 2 gigs of ram either.

So when my battery is done, my phone is done?

I don't think I've ever had a battery die/blow up/become un-chargeable, before the phone itself crapped out.
In the instance of the Nexus devices, replacement batteries can be installed with nothing more than a torx screw driver and 4 1/2 minutes of your time. 6 minutes if you're having a beer while doing it :) (i.e. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-replace-the-nexus-4-battery-it-can-be-done-android/)

Only the one-piece phones I'd have an issue with, i.e. the Nokia Lumia 920. If that battery goes, you're SOL. But that's not any of the phones being discussed here.

Even if it's not user replaceable, most if not all companies offer a factory replacement function. I think Apple charges $80 for an iPhone battery.

As mentioned though, it really is a moot point as batteries today are likely to last the lifetime of the device. For a smartphone, say about three years.

agreed. Most modern day smartphones rarely outlast the battery. Gone are the days of the old brick (and indestructible) Nokia's from the 90's.

iPhones are 2 screws and some free time. Every joeschmoe has a youtube howto video of this.

Even for the schmoe's who don't want to try it for themselves, there's a ton of mum and pop stores that will do it for next to nothing. Ads all over kijiji etc.

I guess Im in the minority, as I carry 2 batts with me. It sure comes in handy.

Having said that, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a phone with a fixed battery as there are other options to keep it going as mentioned in other posts, and also the use of a car charger.

I went with a usb battery pack so the one spare battery supports phones/tablets/music players etc. Price is roughly the same as a spare battery for any one device.

Must be on iOS 6 or higher just for those curious.
