who's still riding? (in toronto)

if I had to chose between the TTC and riding, I would probably put some studs on the tires and continue to ride the entire winter..this is how much I hate public transportation

This reminded me that I also hate public transportation, so rode in anyway. Need to figure out how to adjust the visor on my helmet, it's a bit drafty in there.

Rode out today, thermal layer helps, no problem at all, used heated gloves. Just watch out for possible road salts in some regions.

The past 2 years riding in sub-zero weather and I'm waiting for heated gloves for the first time in December - its the only thing that gets cold + feet

Not me, but I saw someone on monday, on a Honda cbr125 or 250, at 7am, heading south on highway 48 and turning west on Stouffville Rd. Is that someone here on gtam? Props to you.

I just bought a bike on the weekend and expect to START riding once I get it safetied, plated and I get some decent gear!

Its my first bike! Learning on hard frozen hockey pucks for tires will serve me well!

I seem to remember somebody offering a small type of chemical hand warmers, something that would fit in motorcycle gloves. Does this sound familiar to anyone? They are sounding attractive right now.

I have seen them in Princess Auto, I am sure places like Canadian Tire would carry them as well. I think Mark's Work Warehouse had them too.

Basically places that cater to Hunter's, Snowmobiler's, etc or people that work outdoors, should carry this kind of thing.

brr. -2C this morning, but after how awful it was on the TTC yesterday I couldn't bring myself to take the subway/bus so I rode. Battery voltage was 11.8, bike cranked and died, ECU reset and then came back to life. Second try and she lived ;)

Rode home last night. For different reasons went up 404 and headed East at Bloomington (to head home ot Port Perry.) Snow started while going up 404 and on Bloomington it became really heavy. I think about 3 inches of fresh lake-effect snow hit. A little after York-Durham line I pulled over as my bike (2012 DL650 V-Strom) turner over 80,000 km and I had to take a picture. Getting back on the highway was a bit tricky as the shoulder was pretty slippery but I managed. A few minutes after I turned of Bloomington onto Goodwood the snow stopped and the roads were dry.

Fun stuff!

Is that typical on motorcycles? My bike ran out of battery as I rode home. As soon as I parked the bike, the bike died.

Been riding after work and I'm pretty cozy with my layers, it's my hands that freeze pretty quickly.

Heated gloves are on my Xmas list.

I've had that happen for several independent and intermingled reasons:
- old battery, doesn't hold its charge well. Note that vehicle batteries last about 4-5 years on paper.
- charging system is weak. Over time, apparently stators begin to burn out (possibly due to electrical and/or grounding issues).
- too many accessories. In winter especially, heated gloves, grips, and jacket liners (in addition to GPS and other accessories) can draw more than the stator generates.
- special note - rumour has it lithium ion batteries (like those from Ballistic Performance Parts) are a challenge in winter; they don't generate enough amps to start a bike (or car) when they're really cold. Letting something like headlights draw power from them will warm them up. Patience and faith!

I've been stranded too many times in winter due to a fully discharged battery in the middle of a ride. Last winter, I started carrying a spare (heavy, bulky) battery with me. I think I'm going to take the plunge on a MicroStart battery from Anti Gravity Batteries (Pro6 carries them) this winter instead.

^ not really, unless the battery is really ******, but then it would have shown signs before. Probably a charging system issue.

Charging system works at any temperature.

edit: as noted above, heated gear can drain your battery especially in stop and go traffic.

Well done on the 80k in 2 years. :)

I'm toying with getting a DL650, primarily as my winter bike but also as a different option during the fairer seasons. They seem to be pretty cheap on Kijiji.

Yeah I ride a lot. Commuting, weekend rides, trips, etc.

My 2006 DL650 V-Strom has over 202,000 km on it. I basically retired it when I bought the 2012, it is still licensed and insured but I haven't ridden it in a while.
