who's still riding? (in toronto)

my personal limit with the gear i currently have seems to be 0 to -5 . i don't think im going to be riding in colder than that this year. its my first year and i don't have heated gear, which seems to needed in negative temperatures. other than that,,, im gonna ride. if anyone see a 125 in the 416, especially downtown... that might be me :p

Went out for a ride yesterday after work. Was awesome.

Put on a good 130k riding between work sites. Could really have used some warmer gloves but everything else was fine.

I use Warm 'n Safe "Ultimate Touring" gloves. They're reasonably water resistant, heat well, and offer some sport-glove-ish protection like knuckle guards, etc. I will often take them with me on fall rides even when I don't have my heater cables, just to enjoy dry hands in case it rains.

Warm 'n Safe also has "Ultimate Sport" gloves, but they ditch the water resistance, I believe.

Did you get your "Warm and Safe" Gear online or from someone in Canada?

I commute 160 km round trip, every day from Tuesday through Saturday. I have only not taken the bike two or three times since March and those were event related (i.e. needed the car after work for something.)

I stop taking the bike when there is a likelihood of snow on the roads. Good gear makes the difference for everything else.

With these colder days I'm more worried about tire traction.

With these colder days I'm more worried about tire traction.

Just take corners a bit slower and watch out for sand/salt/gravel in corners.

Or... Tire warmers...?

Yea, I have chicken strips this time of year. Not really sure how much tire traction is affected at 0-2C but I don't want to find out.

I know in nice warm weather my tires wont give, but I have no idea how they will behave when I start riding with frost on them.

Also in case of loss of traction(sand, gravel, etc) tires might not regain traction as easily.

Can someone with track experience chime in?

Remember it's not just if your tires are warmed up...the road is cold, so half the equation is always going to be cold no matter what you do to the tires.

Awesome weather last night. Stop by hard rock then just had joy rides all over the place, after some burritos of course.

When I was out on the bike yesterday I got cut off by an idiot to where I had to brake hard, since the pavement was cool compared I the summer months, the rear started to fishtail but atleast I got out of it!

Be careful now on the road, the tires definitely won't grip as good as summer time, take it easy & slow...chicken strips are a sign that you are a safe rider!

I often rode with long-distance sport-touring tires (PR2's, Z6's) down to about -10c without a problem.

Respect that your tires won't have great grip (sand, salt, cold), don't try to get a knee down (Barna!), watch for black road surfaces (black ice, or just plain wet, where dry pavement is white or grey with salt). Slow gentle cornering, baby the throttle throughout the ride. And expect that parking lots are going to be ice until proven otherwise. Yes, I've had to use my feet as skis to keep the bike upright in the occasional parking-lot. If you can't flat-foot your bike, YMMV.

If you want to take on more aggressive winter conditions, try on a set of Conti TKC80 sport-bike sized knobbly tires (120 front/180 rear). They shocked me at how good they were, even on black ice where your boots are challenged to find any grip. Rode those down to -16c without any drama. Love 'em!

Past couple of days I was losing the back end. DTC now set to 8 ;)

i've got chicken breasts on my tires now. bike is acting up in the cold...I think it's a sign to hang it up :(

Match your revs, less rear brake, less throttle dropping. I've found that the rear kicks out during cold temperatures mostly due to engine brake.
