Where's Wingboy?

Glad you're ok. It's nice to let adv bikes have a nap now and again. Too many pavement princesses.

That's the best thing about ADV bikes: they look better with some battle scars...

Exhausted after battling thunderstorms high winds and tree branches falling in front of me. Rode from Shuswap lake to Castlgar. Crossing the border at Nelway tomorrow.

Can't cross the border with an open liquor bottle. It lasted 13,300km.Salut Neil Peart.
On our trip back from Vancouver via the US, I was actually behind the wheel at the border crossing.
The border guard asked if we have any food?

ME: Yes.

GUARD: Like what?

ME: Hamburger buns, snacks, drinks.

GUARD: Do you have any meat?

ME: No (as I knew that was not allow across the border)

GUARD: Really, what are you going to eat the buns with?

ME: Trying to think on the spot with a confused look on my face.
Ummmm, ummmm, vegetables, like carrots, tomato's.

He sort of laughed and let us in.
I supposed we could have been vegetarians but than again, I don't know of any Polish families who do not eat meat.

Cute border crossing this morning. Two little kiosks in the middle of nowhere.
"Hi sup?" Not much eh. "Have a good time"
Most of the 500km was like t2 t3 t4 at Mosport. And the the terrain turned arid dry rolling hills. Nelway to Twisp. (Twisp? I wanna make a Tyson joke here) Evidence of massive forest fires is kinda scary. My stupid abs light has been blinking at me since i dropped the bike in some gravel. So i figured if just rebooted it, all might be ok. It's been stalling locational too. The positive battery terminal was loose. I'll see tomorrow.
Beer me somebody!

The Cascades were awesome. Nice cool ride with lots of snow to be found. Talked to lots of really nice people. Winthrop is a really different town. It looks like an old wild West Town. I'm headed down the west coast now.

One more thing. The Tenere has been behaving weird since the tipover in BC. The abs light was flashing, it stalled a few times and didn't seem to be running as smooth as it normally does. Last night i figured i would reboot the ecu by disconnecting the battery for 60 sec. Hahaha. The positive terminal was very loose. Ran like a new bike today. Always check the simple things first.

Winthrop is a bit weird. If you want more alternate reality stuff, you can also check out Leavenworth, a whole town styled to look like a Bavarian village.

Enjoy the coast!

I think an easy >50% of electrical issues are solved by a cleaning/tightening of the battery leads (or a starter relay). It's always a relief when you figure it out, though...

Unreal day. Started in Marysville WA. Rode thru Seattle because i have heard it's different. Space needle is cool. The highways are weird. Lots of tunnels.
Took a left and headed for Mount Ranier with heavy clouds and fog. But the closer i got the better the weather got.YES! Long 30km switchback ride to get to the top. Entertaining watching the hippies tailgate in the parking lot. Lots of them carry their skis up the snow slopes. Or just hike up and slide down on thier butts. No devices allowed. Nothing!
Turned South for Mount St Helen.i think i did about 150km of switchback which was also filled with huge frost heaves. Suspension was set on max, and i still bottomed it a bunch of times.
When you see Mount St Helen's all you can do is shake your head. It's unbelievable.
Went to a pharmacy and asked for help with my heat rash (monkey butt) pharmacist is a rider. Cool! He gave me clotrimazole (athletes foot cream) and said take a day off. Whatever.
Absolutely no idea where I'm going tomorrow.
Beer me. Love you all.

Edit. The forest roads from Randle to Cougar were like a tropical rainforest.

Try Ihle's paste if you can find it, once the infection is gone. We used it on the twins for diaper rash. I use it occasionally for red ring.

Getting old sucks...Mt St Helens just makes you feel inconsequential to the power of Mother Nature.
It really does. I remember seeing the tv coverage and the National Geographic issue. But it really didn't sink in. When it's right in front of you.... Different story.

It's 90 here in Connell Washington. I'm aiming for cooler weather east of here. South Dakota to check a few things out. Maybe stop at a bar in Sturgis.
Really cheap motel. Laundry in the bathroom sink and a helmet liner wash. Gave my jacket liner a wipe too.A LOT of sweating in the switchbacks for the past few days. Stinky Wingboy.

We got to St Helens just at dusk and partner clambered up to the highest part of the lookout and got this looking like it
still had lava from the setting sun....there is some steam coming from the ruined caldera so the old girl is just snoozing. Well worth the ride up ( which is very nice ) The visitor centre was closed when we arrived but we could go to the lookout. The devastation some 40 years on is still incredible.
st helens on fire.jpg
Rainier is only cloudless 30 days a year from Seattle so if you saw the summit you were fortunate. It is such a monster ...those are the "regular" Rockies in the foreground with Rainier soaring up the way Denali does.
If that sucker ever erupts gonna be a real problem for the Northwest. Same volcano chain/type as St Helens but size large.

Good choices.
I'd second Beartooth but Yellowstone this week will be a total zoo ....and hot.

Certainly not from snow tho there is likely snow at the summit - it will be remainder from the spring plowing. It's a major route and you are two weeks later than when we did it...
Try Chief Joseph Parkway I think ...we missed it and I regretted that. Went sailing by the turn.
The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, Wyoming 296, links the town of Cody with the Beartooth Highway and the Northeast Gate of Yellowstone National Park. The route crosses the Shoshone National Forest through the Absaroka Mountains to the Clarks Fork Valley. The 47 paved miles of the Scenic Byway run from the junction with U.S. 120, 17 miles north of Cody, northwest to their connection with U.S. 212, the Beartooth Highway. The Beartooth Mountains and the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River lie to the north of the road, and the Absaroka Mountains and North Absaroka Wilderness are to the south.

The trick will be doing Beartooth while avoid Yellowstone but if you are patient and plot a route Yellowstone is magnificent.

All of the road closures have been due to cleanup of flooding aftermath. Fallen trees and rockslides.
Google maps shows the east end of the pass closed. But news reports say it's open. I'll try. Thanks @STARSHIP

Not much to say. The town of Connell was an armpit. Interstates were boring for about 200k. Just like Saskatchewan. Then in Idaho i found more mountains at 75mph. The time changed. And speeds went to 80mph weee. Fuel mileage goes way down at 80mph,dilligaf.Thunderstorms all around as i rolled into Missoula Montana.
Looking forward to dinner tonite. There was only a Mexican restaurant last nite in Connell. Only person in there (cops coming in every few minutes) my dinner looked like someone had eaten it already.
