What rifle should I buy?

...also keep in mind that the 20 round magazines (pinned to 5 rounds) are a whole lot easier to release from the rifle than the short 5 round magazines (they fit tightly and don't drop out when the release is engaged so it's easier to have the grip and leverage of the 20 round magazine)

Been looking at the 305B too, the only thing bad is the ammo costs compared to 7.62X54r or 7.62x39 surplus ammo. Do you plan on reloading to keep costs down or will you not be shooting that much?

I thought it was $100

Pretty sure it's under $100, that's what I've been seeing over at CGN

If you can find them, the Australian International Arms 10 rounds magazines for the AIA M10 No. 4 Mk. IV Modern SMLE Rifle [AIA-M10N4] will fit the 305B and legally allow you to have a 10 round magazine instead of a pinned 5 round one.

Apparently AIA is trying to make a comeback and if they do and they release a batch of those magazines they will sell a ton of them to Canadian M305 owners lol.

Everything except firearms. I bring ammo over the border from Michigan all the time. Not sure if accessories are necessarily cheaper, but the selection is better.

Without paperwork?

It is illegal for a Canadian to purchase/possess/export ammo from the US without a form 6. If you get caught on the US side you get your vehicle confiscated, deported and banned from ever entering the country again.

^^ I was just going to say....

Canadian side doesnt care that you're bringing it over. Its verboten to EXPORT it out of the country, and without a small game hunting licence for US, you as a canadian citizen arent allowed to possess it in US to begin with.

Now, there's a workaround, but involves travelling with a US citizen. He/She possesses the ammo/components etc up to the border, when you declare it AT the canadian border then you as a CAN citizen declare it to be brought in.

If 308 was cheaper to shoot/reload, i'd be owning a M305 right now. But just like the VZ/CZ/SKS there is no great way to mount a scope to the action, the side mounts are the best but far from ideal. Reloading for 308 involves 30 cal bullets which are double if not triple the price of 223, double the powder drop = at least 60c a round.

If you really want a 308 round for hunting i'd go with a Scout style bolt action. short barrel, it WILL be more accurate, easier to scope and if you're not a SAKO or Remington snob, can be had for cheaper than the M305.

Mike, the Marlin XS7 you were shooting was a $250 rifle with a $170 scope. 100 yards you saw the capability. Same rifle can be had in 308 for the same money.

I didn't know you could do that! I'll have to make a trip to a gun show and pick up a ton of 7.62x51.

Can you also bring back reloading components? Bullets and casings and what not..

Have they ever seen it and questioned you at the border?

You can't. If caught on the US side you are ******'d. You cannot even buy a red dot sight at walmart and bring it across the border. You are playing with fire in doing so.

I purchased it new online from a reputable dealer. It's the 18.5" shorty. We're emailing back and forth right now about repairs/return

There's a wealth of info on canadiangunnutz.com. I've been reading up on them for a few weeks now, moreso this past week as I try to decide whether to get it fixed or return it.

Diesel, check out this thread: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?199665-M-14-M1a-US-GI-M-14-Inspection-FAQs

People who keep them love them. But everyone does say they need some work. "a diamond in the rough for a great price" they keep saying. For a $450 to $470 poorly made Chinese knock off of a $2000+ M1A (actually, a semi-auto Chinese knock off of a US military M14), it's not bad. Apparently I got a "bad one" but there are several issues with them, the most common being that the barrels aren't installed correctly: they're usually under-indexed (need to be screwed on more) and occasionally over-indexed (screwed on too tight) causing misalignment of the front sight, but more importantly, misalignment of the gas cylinder relative to the receiver. If it's only a couple of degrees it's not an issue, but mine is off by about 6 degrees, causing the operation rod to bind on the operation rod guide.

If you know what you're getting into and are prepared to do some work on it yourself, or even send it to a gunsmith who knows these rifles (obviously more money then), it is a decent purchase, but there will be additional costs. If you want something more refined, better put together right out of the box, you're likely to be disappointed, as I was.

from Wolverine? They're the only ones who look like they have them in stock still (22" barrel)

I went for the 18.5" as the benefits of the 22" length barrel on accuracy seem negligible for me. Having said that, from what I've read, there appear to be less issues with the 22" rifles (different state owned factory I guess)

Those of you interested in getting one, keep in mind these are not regularly stocked items. Importers bring them into Canada in batches, but seemingly not on a regular basis. If you want one, you have to snatch it up.

It's for this reason that I'm sitting on the fence about returning this rifle (can't exchange it for another)

cheaper than a Ruger, but it's a knock off of a semi-auto M14/M1A

Sounds like you get what you pay for with the chinese crap. Since they are a blatant copy im a bit surprised they allow them to be imported. I think I read they dont allow importing them into the usa? Good on them
If its true.

Thanks very much Busabob for alerting me to these quality issues and directing me to that Canadiangunnutz thread.

I would have been a very unhappy camper if I ordered one of these and it required a ton of work even though new out of the box. Now after reading that thread I am not sure if I will order one of these. I want a rifle I can shoot, not one I have to spend hundreds more to bring it up to a safe standard.

Fedon, perhaps you are right. Maybe I should just get a bolt-action in the caliber I want. I have seen some package deals including a simple scope for less than $350 -- like this http://www.basspro.com/Remington-308-Whitetail-Pro-Model-770-Rifle/Scope-Combo/product/10218563/ . Where did you buy your Marlin?

Oh good god stay away from the 770. It shares nothing with its more iconic and widely used 700 and its a huge piece of crap.

There's a joke. A guys telling a story how he left his 770 in the front seat of the pickup while he ran into a store to buy something. Came back outside and saw broken glass and realized someone must have broken into the truck to steal his rifle. When he walked up to it and looked inside there were TWO 770's....Its that bad!

I bought the Marlin from Ellwood Epps. If you can find one in 308, get a Stevens 200. Its basically a Savage rebranded. All the Savage aftermarket stuff bolts right up and its a great shooter.

You really know how to get a guy's attention.
The Marstar link doesn't work for me

Yea 710's and 770's are terrible rifles. Might as well take the barrel off, put the rounds in by hand and fire it with a pointy hammer.....

700's on the other hand are still great rifles.
Even better when you drop them in AI's AICS chassis.

yeah, just saw that the link works now. thanks!

if the M305 works out, this is along the lines of where I want to go with the build:

Lol a la Jaime.

Would u be put on the news as a Master of terror; exporting weapons of mass destruction?

Sent from my tablet using my paws

Not really. TAFB imported them the wrong way.

The problem is, the police, Sheriff, ATF and HS all want a piece of a Canadian leaving a gun store/show because it's automatic SS and deportment to them.

Each State keeps the cash generated by your (whatever they take) @ auction.

They also burn Americans the same way IE: leaving Vegas with 30rnd mag and entering Cali.

MI is bad because they have lax laws like Nevada. No mag caps, less restricted classes so it's watched for both Canadians and out of Staters.

Seems like they're not there to make sure people follow the law but to catch as many people as they can

....and thats surprising?

when i visit gun shops in US, although i dont buy anything i still dont park in front of it with the Ontario plates....park somewhere else and walk over....less hassle that way if someone is eyeballing the place.

Ironically enough, the Americans are jealous of our short shotguns....i told em, i'll gladly trade em the short shotguns for the pistols and AR-15's not to be restricted.

True say. I love it when I hear a guy coyote hunting with an AR saying he's jealous of my 14" Benelli. All I can think is, your crazy hommes.

And for the Saigas!!!!!!!!! That's the only AK variant I have a real interest in... Otherwise, I'd go with a VZ.. BTW who's getting in on the Type-97 pre-sales? :D
