What rifle should I buy?

Has anyone here heard of http://www.terranovafirm.com/firearms_license_toronto.php for getting a PAL/RPAL?

Their website makes them look shady, and they offer in 1 day what most courses teach in 2 and for the cheapest price I've seen anywhere.

The only reason I am even remotely considering calling them is because they apparently still have course dates in Dec. while no other training course I looked at has anything until January.

I think if I were to go with terranova though, I would want to go sign up in person and pay with a credit card so charges could be reversed if they turn out to be a scam.

The word on CGN is that Terranova is a scam. Try FAC (guns.to). Sometimes Gerhard can get you in even if the course is full and there is a cancellation. That's how I got in.

DO NOT GO WITH TERRA NOVA!!!! It IS a scam.

I signed up for it but thank god i did it through pay pal and i was able to reverse the charges.

Basically, you show up at his house. He shows you some guns and does some "training" he then gives you a list of instructors that will let you challenge the test. He is not certified to give you the exams, hes just "coaching" you and charging double what a certified course costs.

I challenged my PAL but my fiancee and my best friend went with an instructor from Barrie Gun Club. Great people, $115 for the PAL with the exam and lunch. Very reasonable.

Terranova is apparently bad.

Thanks for the info... the site looked shady to begin with. I'm glad I asked.
Firestart, I will contact guns.to and see if they can fit me in.

Sorry to borrow the thread, but there seems to be lots of people with knowledge here. Can anyone recommend a gunsmith in Durham to tune-up an old Winchester model 1906 ? Made in 1922, it was the first gun my dad shot, the first gun I shot, and I want it to be mechanically sound for my son to shoot down the road. It's not worth thousands, but my research indicates it has some value.

PM is fine - I don't want to totally thread-jack. Thanks!

I do not know any in the durham area, but there is an old guy that owns Frontier gun and sport on Hwy 20 in Fonthill that has a good rep. Especially with older rifles.

The "Sail" store in Oshawa - second floor at the rifle counter, ask for John Hickey. He did some stuff for me when he worked at Gagnon's. Seems to know his stuff. There's a competent gunsmith at Accuracy Plus, if you feel like driving to Peterborough - he recently fixed an extraction issue on a very old Winchester .44/40, lever action, I have.

So Diesel: have you decided on one yet?

If you're looking for lower cost, I would throw my vote behind RedLiner's suggestion: a chinese made M14 knock-off called the M305

The .308 Win (aka 7.62 NATO) makes an excellent large game hunting round. The price seems very good and the plastic stock would mean you don't have to take care of wood.

on a side note, if I could jack the thread for a moment:

Does ANYONE have a lead on an Belgian FN M-49 (aka SAFN-49), in good to excellent condition chambered in 30-06?

I've been searching for one for ages.

Thanks

I haven't 100% decided yet, and I have awhile to wait anyway because it looks like I won't get into a PAL/RPAL class until January... and then two months + after that until I can go shopping.

I am leaning towards the CZ858. I like the SKS (especially for the price) but don't really like that it isn't designed to take magazines. Sure it can be made to do so, but from what I read they don't always work the best. So the CZ858, which is only $695 including 4 magazines, bayonet, uses cheap ammo -- even the non-corrosive is inexpensive compared to other large calibers, seems like a good deal. I would likely get the folding stock version, so the little bit of wood on it would not be an issue. I also love the iconic look (nearly like an AK) -- looks badass.

Most importantly, it looks like lots of people are interested in the CZ858, so even if I get one and decide it is not for me then I should still be able to sell it without taking much of a loss. Although I suppose that with an SKS, even if I didn't like it I could just keep it anyway because what is $200 any more?

In addition to the CZ I might get a cheap 22LR too... just for fun. I figure if I am going to go to a range then I might as well have more than one choice of what to shoot once I get there.

I've considered the M305, but am shying away because from what I can tell the ammo is more expensive.

For a brief moment I considered getting a JRC 9mm because that ammo also isn't too pricey, there are lots of cool toys for that gun, and I can have 10 round clips, but a gun like that -- I think anyway, may be wrong -- wouldn't be that useful for hunting. Anyway, I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong, but the JRC seems like a short-range urban combat type weapon and not really that great for either a range or the bush.

At the end of the day, I am still a little bit hesitant about getting into shooting because I am worried that I will get bored soon with the nearest ranges being an hour away and then getting bored of range shooting. I could get my hunting license, but then I need to find hunting buddies and even then the open-seasons are so short. Seems like a lot of money to drop for just a few weekends a year of enjoyment. Even a worse $$ spent:times used ratio than a bike!

well, good luck on your decision/choice.

something to keep in mind though, and some may disagree with me on this: if you want to use the rifle for hunting, I'd suggest going with the more powerful .308 Win (7.62 NATO) caliber as it has a flatter trajectory and carries more energy down range for a cleaner kill.

On ballistics charts, the 7.62 x39 Russian round appears only marginally better than 5.56mm NATO, and iirc, has a greater curve in its flight arc than the .308 Win.

Again, you're stressing out over buying a single gun....when we all know it wont be your last...muhahaha...

Diesel, i'm gonna head out to the range next weekend. Sat or Sunday i havent decided yet. Let me know if you wanna come along. I'll let you shoot whatever you like, from 22LR to 8mm mauser.

I might just have to take you up on that, I'll PM you.

So, I too like Diesel am wanting to get something but I am on the fence. This would be my first civilian firearm.
I want to try hunting but I am not sure if I'll like it. I also want to be able to go to a range but not sure I'll have many opportunities. I thought I may want a hand gun to be able to better my skills with something more work related. Then I thought I may enjoy some kind of bird hunting more and would want a shotgun.

In other words. I have NO idea what I want to get as my first civi firearm. Yes, I have my res/nonrest. Help :(

The 858 is an excellent starter.. You will be able to take down boars and deer (just make sure you sight it in with softpoints as they'll shoot different than milsurp). You can take it to the range, have a blast and then take it hunting. Milsurp ammo is dirt-cheap. Out of curiosity, how useful are handguns for work? Not good at distance, no penetration, I would have figured you'd be better off with an SBR if you need to go compact - layman's perspective, correct me if I'm wrong :)

In most southern Ontario WMUs you can't use rifles (except for black bear, if I recall correctly), so a shotgun makes the ideal choice for hunting unless you have somewhere to go up north. Versatile too, you can take anything from deer to rabbit with the right set up

When I am at my most vulnerable (hunched over my patient), my primary weapon is my side arm so I like to be most proficient with that.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am talking to my buddy who's the OPP weapons tech. Seeing if he has anything for sale I may like.

I don't want to bear hunt. At the most, I'd want to hunt birds of all kinds and deer / rabbits.
