What pickup truck do you use?

If I were looking for a truck to haul a bike, I wouldn't go full size. Old, Cheap and Reliable little Japanese trucks like the Nissan pickup which uses 240sx engine and other shared parts is cheap and easy to maintain or the 'indestructible N50 Toyota Pickup (Hilux) or more easily sourced but not as cheap or reliable are the Chevy S10/GMC Sonoma and Ford Ranger.
the 4.3L V6 in the Noma/s10/Jimmy/blazer is the most reliable engine GM has ever made..(also worst on gas for the size of vehicle..i burned more gas than a 2010 suburban on a 250km all highway drive, and almost 50% more than a V8 exploror full passenger and luggage capacity on a 8hr all highway drive...i only had 2 passengers and a couple snowboards in mine.) i had 2 of them and never a single problem with the mechanics of either vehicle.

both got smashed by other fools on the road though... loved my sonoma, but it was horrible in the snow, only thing going for it was the long wheelbase and low ride height, easy to correct your drifts . sold it for a 2dr 4x4 jimmy. great to go through the snow (especially unplowed hwy 93 which i drove every day) but you really miss the length in the wheel base for playing with drifting corners in snow....and correcting when it maters.

I don't break the limit when I have a horse on.

Understandable ... and on much of the Trans-Canada, that would be 90 km/h.

Just understand that, take the same truck and trailer, and drive 75 (ish) mph / 120 (ish) km/h through Kentucky, and it's going to be using 21 - 23 L/100 km, just like the other V8 gas-engine trucks in that Jennings trip. The Honda used a smidge less thanks to being smaller and with a smaller but more modern engine. Newer gas engine trucks with more modern powertrains would probably do a little better, too.

Chrysler Hemi-powered trucks don't get fantastic fuel consumption ...

I had a old mazda B2200 to start and worked to get me to the track and back. Got a Nissan frontier next and could not kill that truck. Had 695,000 MILES on it when I got ride of it. Loved it even it it was a bit hard on gas.

I have been getting around the whole truck issue for the last 6-7 years still haven't come across a situation where i really needed a truck or had to rent one or whatever. My friends have trucks and they constantly complain about fuel and operating costs. or there afraid to drop a bike loading it either to damage the bike or to smash the bedsides from a fall. My solution was to build a little 4'x6' trailer, it has a nice low floor 16" and 20+ tie down points. there is nothing to damage should something fall or shift. the tongue folds up against the front wall to reduce the space it needs and to act as a stand so it stores level. The ironic thing is my friends are constantly borrowing it even though they have trucks.

Here is the old "tow rig" 1994 toyota corolla 1.8L engine and 5spd. this thing towed alot sometimes 2-4 times a week for a 150km round trip. it was a bit lacking in the power department but it managed ok. It got retired about 2 years ago with 370km's on the clock. I got 7L / 100 regular driving and 8.5L / 100 towing gently.

The new rig is a 2006 subaru impreza 2.5i 5spd (non turbo) this thing is a great tow vehicle. has enough power, handles very good and most of all is fun to drive. regular driving yeilds about 10.5L / 100 and towing is basically the same

Do they actually list a town rating for that year of Impreza? Tow ratings on cars are pretty rare these days.

The 2002-2007 impreza's are rated for 2000lbs towing, the wagons have the trailer wiring routed into a plug in the trunk you just need to add the converter and 4 way plug. The corolla was rated at 1500lbs. it is getting rare to find cars still rated to tow especially small cars. I find the japanese automakers are still rating there cars for towing the germans and americans not so much.

My WRX was listed as having a 1900 lb tow rating and that was part of why I bought it. After I bought it I found out it was an error in the dealer's ad and it has no tow rating.

I think this whole tow rating thing with cars is a bit of a sham here in NA. Lesser cars tow more in Europe, it's just here if you don't have a v10 Duramax Diesel, you can't tow anything.

i.e. http://www.airforums.com/forums/f463/towing-with-a-tdi-vw-jetta-79645-7.html

You can't tow with things that don't exist.

I don't know if or when they solved the 2nd gear issue with the wrx but I wouldn't be towing with it. Mine has the STi tranny in it with an upgraded clutch and I have no doubt it would pull a trailer with a bike or two but there's no way I'd risk those parts, I could buy a decent truck for the price of them.

I've towed two dirtbikes and all the gear/tools needed for a day of riding with a 93 civic 1.5L. It did it but just barely, you couldn't pay me to drive that setup for two hours. It took 35min for me to get to the ganny and I felt sorry for my car everytime I was in 3rd gear going up a hill which was every hill. A car with a decent amount of torque would work ok for towing but it's going to put more wear and tear on it and make sure you have good brakes.

I was exaggerating the point :)

Darn right! 200 ft/lbs of torque less and 90hp.

It's still a sweet ride.

It's over 300 bhp and over 550 ft lbs.

Sorry, misread your post at first.
