What did you do in your garage today..?

FIL’s compressor won’t turn on so YouTube is teaching me how to fix one before he brings it over on Sunday.
I just changed the oil in mine yesterday along with the generator and my car. Also pulled apart my new snowblower before it hits the snow and properly lubed/greased/anti-seize the thing before it hits snow. I’ll hit all those small engine machines with Krown and detailing sprays today.

Butchered up a cubical storage system from some scrap plywood for my kids outdoor toys.
The section on the right was made 2 years ago I think, but things were still messy so I added more. Now everthing has its spot.
I told my kids "if you cant find it in here, you obviously didn't put it away properly. Look in the garbage"

All the garages and Cdn Tires in Brampton (that I am aware of) have stopped doing that. Too many people dumping contaminants in with the used oil.
Jiffy Lube has been letting me bring my full oil pans to dump in their drains for 10 years now.

Someone on here suggested a heat pump/ac unit from Sennville. Checked with my hvac guy and he raved about them. Website said a 12000 would do for a 24x30 garage, hvac guy said go big or go home, so it’s a 24hf unit. Finally heat after twenty years freezing my ass off! So, installed yesterday.
There’s a 2 page article on heat pumps in today’s Toronto Star. New heat pumps are actually outselling new furnaces in the U.S but Canada is way behind. Apparently the newer ones work in cold climates and are becoming feasible due to soaring natural gas prices.

I should’ve gone that route when I replaced my furnace last year…but I’m still not 100% they’re great for our winters…not yet anyway.

Lets see how long that stays put :p
Curious what is that bucket thing to the right with the cup on top with tubes?

I have to admit that I’m somewhat sceptical but it‘s a compelling article that should be read for anyone considering a heat pump.

Dust separator system for a shop vac.

Common for woodworking. I had the orange hose hooked up to my table saw.
I also use it for general vacuum duties of the garage or car.

My actually shop vac is stored 6 feet above my work bench on the other end. and connected with the black hose . Above the garage ceiling it changed to a rigid central vac pipe and back down to black hose.

This is done so the debris stays in the white bucket and the shop vac only acts as a suction motor. Filter stays clean pretty much for all of it life.

There are many knock off available on amazon etc.

My mother just got a quote to install a heat pump and leave her gas furnace as backup 1500 after the rebate.

I stand corrected then. That’s cheaper than I paid for my hot water tank at about $2000 or so.

Wow! I've been thinking of replacing my 17-year old furnace and A/C. I didn't realize they'd let you keep the gas furnace as a backup (thought you had to get rid of it). $1500 to upgrade to a more efficient system for most of the year and have a relatively efficient natural gas furnace as a backup instead of resistance heating seems like a no-brainer.

Heat pumps as a sole heating supply are not viable for most of Canada as their heating efficiency drops with the temperature. You might be OK in lower BC, but even the warmest parts of Ontario require supplemental heat for an air source heat pump for sub -10 days (actual or windchill). I have 2 little rental houses in Porcupine, both are about 900sq' bungalows. I reno'd one and put in a new 2 ton Senville 2 head HVAC unit it replaced a 45,000BTU Williams gas heater.

Last year gas cost was $1500 for the year (heat only) for each place -- they are pretty equal. Electricity for this heat pump house was $2400 this winter -- $1500 for the gas house. I did a fist pump in Oct and Nov as the heat pump was saving about 1/2 on gas -- then wham! Dec thru Mid march it got too cold and he heat pump wouldn't make heat, the resistance heater kicked in and it's up to 4x costlier to run. $400 for Dec and March, $800/mo for Jan and Feb.

In the GTA it wouldn't be that drastic, but I'm guessing the heat pump and gas would cost about the same to run. The big decision comes around supplemental heat... fireplace? resistance coils? leave old gas furnace in place?

I'm going to find out soon, I'm replacing resistance heating with a minisplit heat/AC pump into the garage at my house. It cost about $1000 to heat this winter (500sq' upstairs maintained at 18C, 900sq' downstairs heated only when I was in there (8 hrs/week). I'll report the cost this time next year.

Is that a wall-mounted minisplit or a unit mated into the existing central HVAC?
