We Know you Ride, But do you Shoot?

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

Honestly thats not my general experience with people in the hobby in general however online everyone seems like if you don't shoot the same what they do then your some kind of idiot im sure its just general internet buttholery.

I will say its defiantly not a place i will be discussing politics

I was trying to be funny....LOL

but your right, I don't talk politics there either......

Rimfire, Service and Red Rifles are the least snobby sub-forums.. Now if you get into Action Shooting Games or Black and Green Rifles, you better have thick skin unless you got a half-decent rig

What ?? you mean my Norinco AR15 won't cut it.....or my 99 dollar special - 9mm Tokarev either... :-(

Meh i can take a ribbing. I think i'm just going to buy what i like and worry about it. Im defiantly not looking to buy a 1500plus firearm anytime soon.

Lol, that's about as much my AR-15.22 cost....

$70 Lower
$100 LPK
$650 22lr upper
$80 Troy Alpha 15" rail (difference after selling the CMMG 12" keymod rail that came with the upper)
$280 Trigger (Geiselle S3G)
$15 Hogue grip
$150 Ace skeleton stock with carbon fibre tube
$60 Various reliability upgrades and spares for the 22lr "BCG"
$50 Buffer kit
$20 Extra trigger springs

This doesn't include mags and optics and it would be more in today's dollars (I did most of my shopping while the dollars were pretty comparable) With that being said, I wanted to have a legit competition gun and I don't recommend this setup to your average shooter. It's restricted, it's expensive and in any case you couldn't shoot more than 1-2 matches a year with it in Ontario

yFr7txH.jpg

Now for a 10/22, you could come out a lot cheaper..

$300 for a basic 10/22
$150 for that tacticool stock you crave (do NOT waste your money on Archangel or anything else from that manufacturer!!!!!!!!!!)
$20 for a UTG rail
$50ish for an upgraded charging handle and mag release
$30ish for a bolt upgrade kit (firing pin, extractor, extractor spring)

You're already pushing $550ish for a solid 10/22 rifle without mags and optics. You could spend another $150ish for an upgraded trigger. I did my own trigger job and got it real nice, so I saved money there. Ended up selling the 10/22 and buying my AR-15.22 in pieces.

$1500 is cheap for a gun. Good optics is where it gets REAL expensive...

My Savage / MDT Tac build cost me just shy of $3k and that's with a relatively "cheap" optic.

My buddy has a US Optics scope with NightForce rings on his rig that cost more than my Savage and my AR15 put together!

Off topic: Range day tomorrow @ Silverdale to break in the Savage. Have 21 custom Sierra Match King loads prepped increasing in 0.5gr increments. I'll post pics tomorrow!

I know i'm just not ready to even start thinking about being their yet. Not to mention i could not even begin to think how sick i would feel if i was to purchase something like the swiss arms rifle and then in an instant its now an illegal prohibited weapon with all the money down the drain so you understand i'm a little gun shy (pun intended) about getting something like that.. may wait to see how the next election turns out before making some more purchases (worst thing being i don't even want to vote for the people least likely to change anything)

BTW went for the 10/22 as a first time I will do this as a build will also be getting an SKS i have some ideas for that too.

No shame in that. We all start somewhere...

My 1st gun was a Glock 17, then I bought a Norinco 1911, shotgun and AR. The Nork's all shoot fantastic and have had 0 issues.

I have my restricted so pistol is next. Im thinking 22lr double action (i have a thing for 22.r) and recently became enamoured with revolvers but will thing about a higher caliber pistol eventually

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

Shooting is an expensive sport. Period. In fact, it is more expensive than riding. Since June of 2010 (and I'm not bragging) I spent over $53,000 on 40+ firearms, ammo, accessories, and scopes.

The problem with shooting is that as you get older your tastes begin to "mature"... when you start looking at $3000 cuts of Turkish or Circassion walnut for a custom stock, you know you've been bitten by the bug! Thankfully, my wife is patient and I make a fairly decent buck!

Another problem is that if you buy and sell like me, you ALWAYS lose money, usually in the order of 25-30% of the original price. So, if you buy, buy for life! I learned that lesson the hard way. That means, if you can afford it, or if you're patient, bypass the affordable junk and save for a quality gun.

I now have everything I buy customized by a professional gunsmith (to better fit me or to simply meet my specialized needs) before I even shoot them, or I have them completely built from scratch. It's costly, but extremely rewarding and I don't end up wasting money by selling them soon after.

I also have a few affordable utility pieces, like SKS's (which I love, best bang for the buck by far), Rem 870s' and Canadian-made Savage rimfires which are not junk, but they aren't very special either. The CGN forum is the LAST place you'll find consistent messaging around what to buy and what not to buy. For example, the exceedingly popular Ruger 10/22 seems to be worshipped. I almost paid somebody to get rid of mine. Never again.

Lots of pistols can be had with factory, or aftermarket, .22lr conversion kits giving you the best of both worlds for much cheaper.

you can get into something like this ammo costs more but it will go out farther and better groupings

Savage 17hmr

I already have a washing machine.

Thanks for the advice folks im sure once I start shooting i will learn pretty quick what I enjoy and what i want to explore more of the money isn't the issue i know its an expensive hobby its just i don't want to jump in at the deep end like triple said i want to buy for life hence why I went with something that seems to be pretty poplar amongst most folks and is already in a rnd I enjoy. Right now I was 2 of everything I see so will send a while with a 22 an sks and a pump shotgun before I step up to the big leagues

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

My 22LR BTVS is identical. Eats everthing I feed it and has never failed me. I can't seem to part with mine either.

Nice build. While I've not had experience with their 10/22 options, I have AA on my SKS and Rem870 and both are much more solid than most other options I've checked out.

Thanks... Since I've taken the pic, I've replaced the foam tube with a CF one. Can't wait to get my baby back from the customs people (currently in South America, jumping through the gun licensing and importation hoops lol)

I have 3 problems with Archangel offerings, both the Nomad and the 556 (and that's without even factoring their insane pricing into it)...

1) The weight.. They are hogs.. There's absolutely no reason why a 22lr rifle should be that heavy
2) The rails.. Made of plastic and have to be removed when you strip your gun, thus affecting your zero. I don't wanna have to sight in the rifle every time I strip it for whatever reason
3) The quality.. I don't remember the Nomad, but the 556 literally has threaded plastic.. How long will that last?

That's the reason why I recommend Choate M4 stock.. It's a lot lighter, but still sturdy enough, you can take it off without removing the sight since the receiver-mounted rail will be exposed and it will last as long as the rifle. The only downer is the sharp edge at the top of the beavertail, but that can be fixed with a sheet of sandpaper and a 2min application of elbow-grease.

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

Silverdale range day today to sight in and tinker with custom loads.

Top half of pic is setting up on the line to get on paper at 25ds, bottom of picture is the 1st 2 rounds hitting at 100yds.

I am very impressed with this build!

I was just at the lodge at Glendorn. Www.glendorn.com an incredible place but also a shooter , hunter and fishermans dream. There is lots to do for non shooters and hunters too,
they have 1500 private acres, skeet and trap, hunting, fishing with their own hatchery and are a beretta gun dealer and sell you guns at cost.
incredible place, food and lodging first class...I will be going back many times and my wife loved it too.

Fair enough. I can say that in the SKS and Rem870 offerings, neither of those three issues are present. I'm happy with mine but your concerns are all valid for the 10/22 platform.

IIRC, their SKS stocks were well-reviewed.. Hell, most kiddies like them on their 10/22's, but they are the minute of plate at 10yds on 1 in 3 shots kinda crowd... Then they decorate the useless plastic rails with AFG's, flashlights, lasers, etc etc etc and pose thinking how cool they are. Useless for actual shooting, of course...
