We Know you Ride, But do you Shoot?

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

What do people think about the ar10? I found myself getting bored of the 223 and I've been tempted to sell and get something else. IRUNGUNS has some good deals on right now, but I've heard people (a few different people not just on boards) say the ar platform wasn't really designed for the 308. I've never had the chance to shoot one so I don't really know. I love my m14, so it could be one less calibre of bullet I need to have, or maybe I'm making excuses to buy one...

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

It's an ok platform but most likely a passing fad.. You'd be better off getting an M305 and some goodies from m14.ca. Haven't heard of any clear "winners" on the AR10 platform. It wouldn't be my plinking gun, more like a competition gun for Service Conditions, maybe hunting south of the border even though you can get away running a regular AR with the right loads.

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

It's a love-hate thing.. I've had good guys swear on a stack of bibles and also good guys do a different sort of swearing when it comes to it. You can always just run it on one of of your guns as an experiement (make sure the gun gets cleaned WELL, I'm talking parts and ultrasonic cleaner) before you start using FL. I personally don't bother with it. This works for me:

As recommended by a gunsmith who's been shooting IPSC for decades. I use a clock lubricator to apply.

I don't even bother with greases any more and I have plenty of Red'n'Tacky. On a side-note, this oil works great under all temperature ranges that I've shot in, from -10 to +25 (would have gone out at >+30 but we haven't seen much of that in recent years). Some people have complained about FL's cold weather performance and the good guy that loves it shoots indoors 99% of the time.

Btw a properly built $2000 AR is a much better shooting gun than anything you can get at any price. XCR's are hogs. Bushys are slightly less hoggy but still. Tavors are ok, but nothing impressive.

Thanks I read some guys using engine oils also, the Break CLP is very thin and seems to seep out, I was wanting to try something possibly more oily and thicker. I haven't added any grease, the only grease that is in the gun was what came applied to my trigger kit from Zev and on my original slide there was a copper color grease on the slide rails. I have some syringes I can use that should work like that mini oilier you have there

This oil is thicker than regular engine oil, but still maintains cold weather viscosity for those matches and clinics out in the cold or when hunting. Once I did an all day CQB clinic at -6 indoors. $20 shipped for something that'll last many years is great for me. Some guys go by "grease if it slides, oil if it rotates", but I stopped messing with grease without any loss of reliability (actually a gain as it used to cook off after doing a lot of shooting, while this oil doesn't). The coppery stuff is probably just the copper anti-seize. Syringes work great but are not as convenient for storage, especially when taking the oil bottle to a match.

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

I like G96 and MPro7, to each their own I guess

I'd stick with the m14 & buy a Keltec RFB or RFB hunter instead. Another option might be an upper in 6.8SPC or 7.62x39 - I'm assuming you have an AR-15 already. Just watch the compatibility with std AR-15 lower receivers. Keep the .223 for inexpensive plinking.

Johnny, read some reviews on CGN for Omega locks.. They say that they wear out quickly to the point where you can't unlock them. Just buy regular combination locks. A bit bulky but work every time and if you ever have trouble unlocking them, all you need is a screwdriver.

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

I'll try anything at least once, but where do you buy it? Online or at a local store?

G96 is sold online by a bunch of retailers, just google it and see who has it in stock. MPro7 I buy at US Wal Mart for 10 bucks

They work fine for me, and guys on CGN also said they have been using them for years with no problems. And I have 5 of them already. So I will take my chances. I will say that I can see you having problems if you over tighten them but I don't.

I had a range day yesterday, they had G96 so I grabbed a little bottle to try out and they also had weapon shield. I don't know if that is any good but it came in a little bottle with a needle dropper like FiReSTaRT posted. So I grabbed that too, its refillable so I can always put the G96 in there if its better. I asked the guys at the range what was good and a debate started, everyone had a different opinion on what they use and think is best LOL

Lol yeah, it's all smoke and mirrors and snake oil.

The only products that REALLY are different seem to be FrogLube and Fireclean. I use MPro cause it's cheap, and it has rave reviews from military, but then again so does G96

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

Just got back from the range.. Yikes, those PCV mags really didn't like sustained rapid-fire.. Were giving me feeding issues like crazy.. Not bad on an IPSC stage because there is enough rest between doubletaps, but definitely not suited for a mag dump.

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

I never fussed over oil... guns are stupid simple compared to something like a motorcycle engine, and the tolerances and types of stress are nothing compared to an engine. Any oil will work fine- hell you can just use Mobil1 and be done with it. Dudes will spend hours arguing over the dumbest ****.

I drive my guns HARD... Had cycling issues when BF CLP cooked off, so I started greasing the surfaces, but even that cooked off near the end of the typical training session. Running the Ipone gearbox oil solved that problem. Stopped having cycling issues no matter how much/fast I shoot running that stuff.

Yeah I doubt you'd cook off any kind of transmission or motor oil... wonder what temps the inside of a receiver reaches after a few mag dumps?

My aluminum handguard, even after butchering cooling slots into it with an angle grinder, gets too hot to hold with bare hands or even Mechanix gloves if we get too frisky with the trigger. PIG gloves have been holding up pretty well though. I may order an extra pair from DS Tactical.

Torture test with drum mags, their chamber never got over 150°F... that's nothing.

The gas block and barrel shot up past 600°F easily, so that's why you can't grab your alu. handguard with your bare hand after running the rifle hard... but cooking off lube in/around the BCG? Shouldn't happen.

My cycling issues were with the pistol.. Should have specified.. But I like the idea of "1 lube to lube them all" so I run it in everything

Holsters? What are you guys using? Brand and type?

My go to gun is basically a race gun now, so Id really like to get a race holster like Double Alpha Academy or Ghost. I have a basic hand gun course tomorrow and after that Im taking the ranges holster course, then next spring/summer I will take a black badge course. So I will also need a regular holster as they do not recommend me using a race holster to start as I will shoot myself in the foot...Which I am kinda on the fence about that as the trigger is covered on them just like a regular holster until you pull it out of the holster. So how is it more likely I will shot myself in the foot?

Anyways looking to hear what others are using for brand and style

I should probably buy a regular holster and just use my OEM slide for now, so I dont scratch up my new slide I just got
