Upgrading from SS 600cc to litre bike

Concours > Busa and ZX-14 if you were actually wanting to tour.

I use the Busa as a yardstick for people who are rubbish at riding. 3/4 of the Busa riders I've ever met only bought one because of it's fastest production bike title and cant ride for ****.

You expect people to buy Busa's so they can drag knees?

LOL, you got to be fk%^g kidding me... did you even ride the SS before or you are throwing a question out there just to stand out... from what you are saying, sounds like you are switching from 250 to whatever but wanted to impress someone....

A properly tuned 600 doesnt have a slow pickup at all... in fact, at the very bottom it has a better pickup than heavier bike....

P.S. dyno jet power comander + proper tuning + aftermarket exhaust = death machine... roll-on willies not a problem until 5th gear... also, just an fyi, bigger engine means squat. rode 9r stock vs yzf1000 + port and polish + oversized pistons = he saw my taillight after 4th gear (mid range)

SO, THE POINT HERE IS: maybe its not the bike, maybe its the rider...

OHHHHHHHHH, and btw, ye, it is a 250: http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforum/showthread.php?177036-WTB-1990-ZXR250-Engine-Parts
grow some balls, there is nothing wrong with riding a 250. up-sizing bike engine size in a thread just to look cooler, is same as buying a magnum condom at the shoppers drug-mart, just to impress ppl around u...

Wooh, did I strike a nerve or something??? No need to get all hostile on just a question. If I did anything to piss you off, I am sorry for what ever that is.. peace man ;)

The zxr250 is a project bike I bought with a buddy of mine, if by any chance you know of any parts for this Japanese import bike, appreciate you letting me know.

The 600 pick up it does suck ***, with power commander, dyno tune and whatever.

Thanks everyone for all your input, whether in support of the litre bike or tell me to go to a retirement home...;)

I will admit that I DO NOT and COULD NOT ride my 636 to its full potential, but to ride it to its full potential, does it mean that you need to consistently launch it out from 0 to 100 km/hr in 3 sec? and max it out at about 250 km/hr every time you are on the highway??

Actually, my car without the limiter can go 320km/hr... does it mean I need to drive at that speed all the time??? So if that makes me a poser, I truly am for sure!!

It seems a lot of hostility comes from people thinking I ride slow and thus, I shouldn't be getting a litre bike. Hmmmm... I guess most of the 911 owners should go get a smart car instead from the way they drive. And most senior folks on a Ferrari are just suicidal.

Like I said on my earlier post, my main question is the differences of the throttle response between the 600 and 1000 and ideally getting the feedback from people that actually had ridden in both. From what I am seeing on the replies, it seems that the extra power should be manageable as long as I don't go too crazy and the handling is relatively the same.

Thanks again for everyone's feedback!

you always want more,

do you liter bike guys think of upgrading to a 'busa or zx14?

I am contemplating about the idea of moving up to SS litre bikes. Main reason is the faster pick up with less effort...with the 600, it seems like I need to give it a good twist to get it out fast. However, I am still a pretty conservative rider, ao even on hwy, I go within traffic pace, maybe pacing with the faster vehicles but not trying to filter through cars going at 180+ all the time. In that regard, my 636 is more than enough.

Also, I plan to get another used bike, and from what I heard, the engine of litre bikes are generally in better condition than most 600cc. But that's case by case and you need to look at the actual bike itself. But I am guessing, given the same maintenance level, a 1000cc bike would be more durable than a 600cc??

The key concerns are the insurance and the handling. I still consider myself a novice with only 2 seasons, so, my turns still has a lot of room for improvement. Would the litre bike makes it a lot harder to adjust to the turns? Also, I said I wanted someone for easier acceleration, but would it be a bit too much to handle?? Haha. I had never ridden on a SS litre bike so I don't even know the feeling. None of close friends have one, so never got first hand experience.

Anyone who had made the move from 600 to 1000 can share their thoughts, that would be great.

I am considering the zx10, cbr1000rr, R1 and slight chance of a S1000RR but I kind of worry about BMW's electronics relability cuz i personally had bad experiences with their cars, not sure if it transends into their bikes... : p

Straight line acceleration on a 1000 is absolutely retarded! Roll on in 2nd gear at 180-200km will lift the front end up...

With that said in the city its a lot easier to ride, also im 6 feet tall and 225lbs and found the 1000rr more comfortable than 600s.

Cruising in the twisties is also not that much of a difference, to me the difference was when i started to push it on the street. In this aspect the 600 wins hands down. Handling is better and you can actually rev the **** out of it without dying. The 1000 when riding on the street full out will result in one of two things, a) death b) loss of license :lmao:

With that said id get another one in a heart beat :)

Yeah OP I have the same bike and I agree. Even with the extra 37cc it's gutless at lower rpms. Would like some more passing power instead of downshifting every time I need to make a quick pass.

I race both in a weekend and prefer the liter bike, however I hate to say this but you do not need any more power on the street than your 636.

You are probably riding the bike at around 8000 rpm, these bikes don't come alive way after the 10000 mark, so pin the throttle a lot more than what you are.

With only 2 seasons under his belt, I'd be surprised if the OP has even come near redline on his 636... I was intimidated in the higher RPMs until my 3rd season of riding, and I'm only on an sv650.

OP; sounds like you want more torque - maybe look for a v-twin ~600cc bike instead? They offer slightly more torque and responsiveness at lower RPM's and "city/legal" speeds.

I've got both a 600 and a 1000. Ridden back to back the 600 feels like it's broken. The 1000 puts a smile on my face from just over tickover whereas the 600 needs its neck wrung before it gets fun. Price out insurance and see what the difference is for you (for me the price diff isn't very much).
It's hard to get a 600ss to feel "quick" unless you can get the revs in the 10k+ range so if a litre bike isn't quite the level you're at yet maybe you should look at something with more midrange in the 600cc range or even a larger displacement but tamer power delivery (SV1000, FZ8, etc).

Of course a 600 will feel slow if you've just ridden a 1000. Same as a zx14 makes the 1000 feel slow. Don't know about all of you but I get a smile out of my 600 everytime I get on it.

Umm, NO.

The ZX14 will make a 1000 feel small maybe. But not slow.

I upgraded a few years ago from a cbr600rr to 1000rr and my opinion is handling is about the same, of course the 1000 has way more power but is manageable. Your the one in control the bike will only do what you want it to.... My girlfriend has never been on any kind of bike and she rides my 08 cbr1000rr all the time now.. She rides it like a granny but I guess still rides it. So I don't think you will have any problem moving from a 600 to a 1000..
