Toxic work colleagues

This is more of a cathartic excercise in venting but any advice is good too.

Where I work there is a woman about to retire. I already have been doing her job a little and doing it much better than her over the past few years. Over the past few years I also did some work outside the dept that was totally legal and above board but she just didn't like it, I won't explain but it made her look bad but I was just doing a job. Over those years she's taken every opportunity to belittle or criticise me and I just shrugged it off. I just received a promotion and am doing pretty well truth be told. I have a good position in the dept etc. This woman's latest e-mails have been to me but also cc'ed to my boss etc and she has accused me of lying, etc. Again, I did have some choice words written down but shrugged them off. I went to see the boss to explain and he advised me to just ignore her. I think he's more or less on my side.

Thing is, it's hard to ignore someone so intent on causing trouble. I explained to her that I've been to see the boss etc but I get the feeling this witch will not back down. I think it's another 4-5 weeks at least until she retires, maybe longer though.

I looked at an article about bullying in the workplace and it seems as though it's more or less written with her in mind.

Should I be the better person and just ignore her completely or is it time to call the union and ask for libel charges to be brought etc? I get the feeling that if there's a fight no one will win. I'm wondering if I just ignore her she might shut the **** up too. She seems like the type of person to thrive on argument. Her latest e-mails have been quite bizarre and very unreasonable.

Anyone been in this situation?

And you're assuming there's a union involved. If there is then it's the boss who it gets reported to and then the union, if the boss gives no satisfaction. The union is there to back you up, when chain of command fails. It doesn't replace it. Whether by lack of action, or action that has failed with respect to talking it out with the co-worker, it's beyond that now.

Posting it on a motorcycle forum, talking to friends, asking your shrink; these are all things you can do, at any step in the process. Belittling someone, for looking for insight, is petty.
Did you read any of the posts in this thread? first you insinuate I said it's not a bosses job to intervene, now you insinuate I was assuming. Rob it must be an off day for you, usually you are better then this.

Yup, I missed that. Still doesn't support your attack on the Op though, does it?

It's not an attack on the op, just an objective point of view. I think he handled the situation wrong.

That word objective. I don't think it means what you think it means.

Those are used to catch the op's attention. The rest is my point of view..

So let me recap.

I hope your promotion doesn't require you to make any decisions. You have to come on a motorcycle forum and ask how to deal with a Co worker? You may be getting a demotion soon if that's the case. It's funny how everyone has advice, but have only heard one side of the storey, I'm sure the co workers side is different, but hey you ride a motorcycle, so you have to be telling the entire truth right? WTF

Which part was your opinion on the situation, the part about Tapatalk? Everything else reads like an attack on the OP.

I think it's self explanatory. The comments lead to the fact he handled the situation totally wrong. Sometimes you have to read and anylize to understand. The op will get a reputation at work as being a rat, whiner ect. The op should have put the same effort in to solving the situation as they did posting it here. Whining on a forum will not make it better for them. In my opinion the big problem is, they are a union member, and we all know unions make people soft, lazy ect. If I have an issue at work, I don't come here and cry about it, I take action to solve it. The workplace today has become soft. You have to be careful what you say, who you look at.I blame people like the op for this.

That's a very subjective explanation, for an 'objective' viewpoint.

It's objective by stating the facts, and not what I am thinking. It became subjective when I had to explain it, stating exactly what I am thinking. Now what bothers me most is the op's words. They say they have been doing her job a bit and doing it better, they state they did some work outside the dept and it was legal and above board. If that had to be stated, just maybe it's borderline legal and above board, so the Co worker could think maybe it isn't. The op comes off as one of those people that is a company kiss ass, that tries to make people look bad. Other problems I can see, if the op is doing work in other areas of the company, and it's a union company, then people in the dept they are doing work for won't be too happy with them.

You might want to look up "fact" in the dictionary too along with "objective'
