Toronto politics

Can we raise money as a group and send it to some poor city with the condition that they take Olivia Chow as her mayor and she is never allowed to be the mayor of Toronto? If every person in Toronto gives $10, we can pay for roads for a small city!

Let me put it this way, if Chow is mayor, say goodbye to free motorcycle parking for certain. Motorists are nothing but revenue generators to her. She'll use that money to expand the money-losing Bixi bicycle program further wasting more millions. At least Ford doesn't care about free bike parking, it's not even on his radar.

Was it not Fords directive to find every penny in the cushion (while cutting revenue streams Toronto needs) that lead to looking into taking away free Motorcycle parking?

But it wasn't Ford who proposed the idea, it was a couple of councilors. I don't believe Ford even gave it any thought and it's still in limbo. But for sure Chow would push it through, even if it costs more money to implement and maintain than it actually generates. For her it's bicyclists above all. While in parliament, she wanted to mandate side skirts to be fitted on all trucks to prevent cyclists from getting run over because one woman in Toronto was killed that way. Put the responsibility and costs on all truck operators to protect her precious cyclists, that's her logic.

I could care less about free MC parking, I need a mayor that makes manufacturers think logistic getting in and out of my plant? good roads, hirable work force, educated population, my workers WANT to live there. Even the financial district are seeing small exodus to 905, much nicer office space at cents on the dollar, same time drive to airport, less prestiege? maybe but its bottom line dollars mattering more. For the city to really be successful IMHO it needs all cylinders firing, parades, festivals, road construction/infrastructure, accessability and favourable corporate tax rates. Turning over sofa cushions and looking for spare change? its buzz to appeal to the masses. Ford had the chance to be the greatest mayor in years, but his privileged west TO highschool mentality killed it. I really don't see Chow as an option for "my Toronto" , but Fords idiotic representation of the right may create the momentum for a swing left.

Exactly, the house she and Jack built was based on fact the rooms on the right are usually full, there's always a seat if you turn left. Just like going into the theatre.
Look what I'm giving you , jobs for young people , daycare, training for new Canadians. All very important things............

How about a booming factory where I can make enough to put my kid in a GREAT daycare, I want my kids at a center that attracts great employees that chose to work there because they make a great wage, not somebody needs to get there community service hours signed off. Her family moved here because it was NOT like Asia, don't make my TO China light.

Olivia Chow will officially declared her candidacy for Mayor of Toronto this morning. God help Toronto.

God has forsaken Toronto.

I'm still ****** that my property taxes are going up over the next few years in part to fund the Ford Subway. If they were going up to actually improve transport around the city it would be one thing, but a subway where a fully funded LRT would do more sooner was just idiotic.

Exactly. If subways made sense with the population density of scarborough then you would expect Mississauga to want them also as they have similar density. There is a reason Mississauga hasn't built subways. They are a waste of money unless you have the density to support them. If any subway line makes sense its a commuter relief line would serve the suburbs much more as well documented in the research by experts not Rob Ford's divisive vote pandering.

Convince everyone you know to forsake Walmart and shop local if you want to bring back high wage factory work to Canada. People complain about lack of high paying factory jobs but then won't pay for the more expensive products.

Name me one candidate of any party that has delivered what you asked? None of them can. High pay low skill days are gone.

Really?? How did she make TO "China light??"

If CHOW becomes mayor. Get ready for $2.00/litre gas, 10x higher taxes and widespread job losses. Worse than today.

I don’t need to argue anything. Gas is going up and people are waking up to these socialist governments and their agenda.
You keep thinking everything is ok.

Based on what? lets see some evidence to back up your wild speculation.

I agree we defiantly need no socialism and need to go to Laissez-faire capitalism. Privatize every road, hospital, school with the only thing being run by the government being the police force and military and business transactions are free from all government scrutiny.

On top of the severance packages and job losses and wage decreases for the common worker. I don't think the private sector or public have any appetite to privatize everything. Would you pay tolls for each set of streets you drive on? Would you want billboards spackled along your residential streets? If not what interest would the private sector have in maintaining roads, schools and hospitals unless they can make a good return through what would probably be advertising money & cutting salaries unless you work in a rich school or hospital. What do the people who can't afford to pay for private schools do? Privatization is a quick way to widening the gap between rich and poor and establish the cast system again.

Rob Ford promised privatized funding for his subway projects. How many companies stepped up? NONE. There is no interest from the private sector for civic projects unless they can gouge the customer. I don't believe for a second that privatizing everything will make it better. It is usually shown that this is not the case.

Thats my point people bad mouths socialism but everyone wants to use Paths, Walkways and roads for free. Social programs such as medicine and schools and public infrastructure are a Net benefit there isn's a country in the world that isn't socialist.

I think that you need to draw a line between the concepts of infrastructure, social programmes, and actual capital "S" Socialism. There isn't a pure Socialist country in the world. There isn't a pure Capitalist country in the world.

Infrastructure has been the responsibility of organized government, as long as there has been organized government, if only to foster making war and providing defence. The Romans epitomized this with their roads and aqueducts.

As to Chow I encourage anyone who hasn't done so to listen to her interview from CFRB, this morning, and critically analyze it. Listen past the buzzwords.

Opps sorry I missed the tone and agree with you 100%.

No one seems to ever show an example of a country with no government influence actually functioning on a large scale.
