Toronto Motorcycle and Powersports Show - Feb 14-16

I'm also thinking of getting a set of custom filtered earplugs done at the show. I see that Big Ear (mentioned above) and Hearing Protection Ontario (also mentioned above) will both be there.

Anyone have any feedback on one of those vs the other? or custom filtered earplugs in general? Foam I find annoying to use and the reusable ones I have now (Earpeace) are kind of finicky in terms of getting them to consistently seat properly i.e. I have to be very specific about how I put them in if I want them to seal correctly.
I have custom ones made locally. 99% sure they are the same as the Big Ear earplugs.

I like them and never see myself riding a bike without them. I also did not like the foam as I found it would loose its seal either when putting the helmet on or during riding. The times that I did try them for a few ride, I found my ears would hurt as the foam material would try to expand.

I paid approx. $90 for mine and its the best $90 I spend on motorcycle hear. They take about an hour to make on the spot.
If you can, try to request 2 different colors. My right plug is bright pink and the left is bright yellow. Go with bright colors so they do not blend with anything on the ground if you drop it.

I got a set of plugs at the January show from Big Ear. They fit great. They were ready in 30-40 minutes. $100. In ear speakers cost more, even if you supply your own and have to be sent out to be done.
The Big Ear rep lives up in Wasaga Beach.

Appreciate that guys. I see the filtered ones are about twice the price on Big Ear's site, so I'm assuming you both got solid ones? Any feedback on how they work with a Cardo/Sena? I don't need speakers in them, but my understanding is the filtered ones would be better to use with my Cardo.

Good idea on the different colors for left vs right

I have a Cardo and they work fine with it. It is set to max volume. Sometimes I wish it was a tiny but louder but then I am sort of thankful that it isn't any louder.
I had a Sena before, no issues either.

Which Cardo are you using and do you know which speakers?
I keep forgetting to try out the custom earplugs and hopefully this is the show I finally buy them. I would only get the customer earplugs without speakers, since I am always using my Packtalk Bold w/ 45mm JBL speakers.

Also hope to be at the show around lunch time on Saturday.

I got the solid ones. Don’t have in helmet speakers so can’t comment. They mark one of the ear plugs so you can differentiate them.

The Hearing Protection Ontario booth was busy so I didn’t talk them at the show and contacted them after by email. Their price was the same for on the spot made plugs. But, they can take a mold and send out to lab and make them for $160. They said that the material quality of those were better. On site was made out of vinyl and at the manufacturer they are made out of medical silicone.
Not sure if Big Ear has similar.

When I had mine done (twice) this was the set up used.

I am convinced that the "medical material" is dental impression material. 2 Part tube that squeezes out using a special gun. I asked if it is the same but I was told it is not, but I am not convinced that it is not.

I have access to the dental impression material and was thinking of trying it out but I can't find a volunteer to allow me to squirt a bunch of jelly into their ear.
I think some companies (maybe even Big Ear) send out a kit to your house so you can make your own impression. You then send the impression to them and they make the custom plugs with filters or speakers.

This stuff dries almost instantly.
The only additional thing that was done my my earplugs once they cured, they were dipped in a clear coating to seal them better.

I have a Packtalk Bold. It came with a 2nd set of speakers and the JBLs. Not sure of the brand but I can take a look and get back to you.
I bought my Cardo used. The PO said the aftermarket speakers worked better so I installed those and never bothered to compare.

That looked familiar. I didn’t look too closely as I was nervous with that caulking gun going into my ear.
At the January show it was the owner of the company up from North Carolina that did the deed. He’s the guy on their YouTube video.
I see that they will send a kit to you for the mold.
Not sure if I would have paid the extra $60 from the Hearing Protection folks.
I might take you up on the Guinea Pig offer as long as your hands aren’t shaking and sweat not pouring off your forehead. 😂

Did they put in a small piece of foam/sponge on a short tether.
Its purpose is to prevent the magical solution from getting to deep into your ear canal.

Yah he did that. I thought that was to pull out the plug. The plasticy goop going in was weird and glad it came out in one piece

Living with tinnitus the past several years has been unpleasant to put in kindly. I have earplugs but have been contemplating custom earplugs for a while, just never had the opportunity to check them out.

I will be going to this show on Saturday...so @cutekill, who do we have to know to qualify for those tickets you were bragging about :)?

Anyone remember how much parking is at Enercare. I seem to recall it was less than taking the train for me but my memory tends to be kind.

I'd expect $10-20

There were cheaper lots down the street south of lakeshore.
