The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

Not my fathers (just something I bought used ~20 years ago), this one is from 1971, I wear it regularly. Just had it fully serviced and the case refinished by a Rolex RSC. It needed a new crown so I had to go with authorized service as these parts are not available from Rolex to independent watchmakers. It does feel like taking your old car to the dealer... work was top notch just expensive.

Entry level model back then (ref 6694). Rolex is like the BMW of watches, in many, many ways....

My father's watch was a Timex Automatic... I have that as well (posted early in the thread).

I think Rolex may be more like Ferrari , they both make you buy models you don’t want, to get to the model you might want.
BMW just takes your money . ( wifeys low end beemer just got major service , which is not low end despite the car)

To be more precise... what it says about how the owner perceives themselves, the position it holds in the luxury hierarchy, the cost achievability (outside of sales practices), the desirability, the cost to dealer service vs independent, a household name with a perceived status of those outside of the fold.... All that may be positive or negative or both.

I see (self indulgent to be fair) my 6694 like owning a entry 2002 or maybe an E30.... in the above context.

Now as for the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation (Rolex is a Swiss charitable trust, more or less...) modern sales practises , yes they are trying to be Ferrari like BUT.... They are not part of the Swiss Holy Trinity which I would compare more Ferrari, Rolls, etc. with respect to my first paragraph (top end or the luxury market). Back to BMW status.

It's not as exclusive as they want it to be. You can still get the Rolex to a point with right connections. But, that's not anything new. A good deep recession would of fix all these chumps back in the old days. However now with concentrated money even more in the upper crust, should be interesting to see.

Even more crazy is having to have an appointment to walk into a jewelers or high end watch dealers.

Was in Vegas last week and stores are starting to have Rolex certified pre-owned displays.
Hilarious to see a 10 year old watch cost 2x more than the brand new one at the front.
(Guess which one you can buy now and which one is display only or waitlist required?)

That’s an unusual watch . I like it .

Thanks!
It started around 15 years ago looking for someone to fix my grandfather’s beat up Omega pocket watch. No watchmaker would touch it. So started looking on eBay for parts and went down this rabbit hole with this guy having some parts for the pocket watch and a watch called Enicar ….an expedition to Everest and I was hooked on the story of the brand. This particular watch was beat up and I bought it for parts but couldn’t do it when the watch maker said it just needs cleaning if you are okay with the dial. It kept such good time that I kept wearing it and it grew on me. I love the old automatic watches.

I likes the magnetic induction.

Submariner , no date , is on my list . Like them a lot , I just don’t want to spend 12-15 k .

Agreed. MSRP I'd pick one up today. Only Rolex I'd be interested in owning. 12k for a mint one is basically msrp plus tax. Last time I looked msrp was $10500. 12k would be hard to find if not impossible.

Me too. That is the true Submariner, as opposed to the Submariner Date. I like the "two liner" best, in keeping with my KISS aesthetic preference. The one I posted is a LV variant. The indices and hands are larger. I replaced the original green bezel with a black one.
