I’ve never had the opportunity to take a watch apart , I should get a few pawn shop low end and experiment. I think I’d enjoy it .

Well I got some of the parts on (new crystal, bezel, bezel insert, chapter ring, and rotor). I didn't know they made two different movement spacers, and apparently I have the wrong one that doesn't allow me to run the clear case back, so you can't see by new fancy rotor... :(

So I've got some parts to buy on my next order. Pretty happy with how its turned out, though this makes me want a new dial even more now...

does the new parts include seals and such? how do you go about getting water resistance back?

New front seal came with the crystal. Case back seal you can buy but I didn't change it.

It should be fairly water tight but without testing it who really knows. I'm not swimming with it so I don't care if it can't go down to 200m anymore, just rather dust proof.

With the way pawn shops price watches, it's probably cheaper to take apart one of your good ones. They seem to smoke more crack than their thieving patrons.

While not entirely cheap, there are lego sets that cost more. $500 for a gmt batman homage that comes in pieces and you build it. 4r34 is not a terrible movement. I like them much much better than the 7s in the seiko 5's.

Edit:
@mimico_polak should get one too. Much cheaper than investment watches (but depreciates to zero instead of appreciating) and can fill his lego itch.

Never even knew a watch kid existed! And yes…been a while since I bought LEGO.

Stupid mortgage.

Watch repair on YouTube can be a pretty chill way to kill some time. Two off the top of my head are Wristwatch Revival and Red Dead Restoration, the former with an entertaining patter as he goes about his business. the latter being mostly silent but with endless tools and gadgets to resurrect some seriously damaged examples.

It's certainly a damn sight better than the less charming collector channels with painfully try-hard names like Urban Gentry, Gadgets for Gentlemen, etc.

I'm pretty sure that was called a Pepsi back in the day. A few of my dive buddies had them.

Yeah it still is. A lot of Rolex GMT/sub/etc. dive two tone style watches have nick names. Sprite, Coke, Rootbeer, Batman, etc.

Its a lot easier to say Pepsi than BLRO or Batman instead of BLNR.

Agreed, I love watching repair videos. Another couple of YT channels to watch in addition to above are Watch Repair Channel and Stefen Erich Pahlow. WRC is conversational, detailed and instructive, and he offers a course through his Patrion channel. Pahlow is an old school watch restorer. His work is totally amazing as he brings neglected rare vintage watches back to their former glory.

I’m more confused now with the FB groups…do people willingly spend 2-5-10-20k without seeing the watches in person?

I’m sure there are reputable dealers but it seems ripe for someone to build up their reputation and then screw over some unsuspecting buyers.

Crazy that the quartz era pretty much made watch maker a dead trade and nobody pursued the career to the point there was a global shortage . Fast forward 35 yrs and is a skilled high end trade . Guys that can service the upper end can make a good living.

I remember my buddy bought a whole kit for watch repair also and he ended up getting some business from it. Good hobby I'm sure.

Not cheap to start, but the resources are out there to learn.

ooooooo the parts are here!

Kind of regret not getting new hands and dial, but can always swap them out later

Where did you get all the tools to actually take apart, and return back the watch? My friend said he's got a small watch press where he can return the watch to water tightness also.

Any recommendations on a tool to open up a watch and replace the battery? Last time I spent $50 on a battery replacement/watch...would much rather do it myself. When the guy told me $100 for the 2 batteries I almost fell off my chair.
