The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

Why do criminals have such bad taste. Poor breitling. Currently at $4600 which is more than an unmolested version. I guess if you had parts, you could return to stock and sell off the gold and diamonds

Language selection - GCSurplus / Sélection de la langue - GCSurplus search for breitling. .

Interesting read and not unlike what we are seeing in the CDN market with prices coming off crazy on high ticket watches .
You do not want be be the guy with 500k of inventory on Rolex when they drop 20% , it may be the new house flipper blues . All things correct in time .

Used and new prices are crazy right now for many luxury watch brands. In some cases MSRP alone has increased two fold+ in the last five to ten years for many models and COVID supply chain on new has just added to that. Many new watches selling on the grey market (think stubhub...) for multiples of new, which is just crazy dumb--grey market used to be discounted watches dealers could not unload.

Some luxury brands have also increased prices as a defence against smart watches (moving upscale), they learned not to go head to head in the Quartz Crisis (70s). This has also driven up prices. Rolex, Omega (and other Swatch brands), etc. are weathering smart trends quite well from what I have seen. Lower tier houses that were on fire years ago like Fortis are getting murdered.

Add to the above high interest rates and lower discretionary spending....

Luxury goods tend to be a little more recession proof but I think there is a perfect storm brewing for watches and my belief is things will come down in the next few years, specially used. Ironically I did not put much thought into it at the time but going over my records I bought a lot of watches (resale) in 2008 and 2009. I have a few I am keeping an eye out for now for downward price trends.

I’m chump change in watch money , if what I own drop 50% , I bought them primarily because I liked them so while sad it’s not a train wreck. I hope to aquire a Rolex sub for under 15 cdn that’s not beat to death . Maybe this spring is the chance .

I have seen msrp on 6-7k watches jump to 8-9k in the last three months regardless of brand . Inflation Im told .

The smart watch thing may be a serious choke hold, I have seen watch magazines giving column time to smart watches , it’s started

Tuna's ok. If I was buying a seiko diver it would probably be a turtle. The great thing about watches is people can love different things. For the price people are asking for those (pushing four figures), I wouldn't be impressed that it has a hardlex crystal. They are a lot easier to scratch than sapphire. I have a Seiko with hardlex and it has a huge swath of scratches on the crystal (rubbed against a brick?). If it is a diver or tool watch, I wear it when I am doing things. I want the watch to hold up to that (or be cheap enough that I don't mind the battle scars).

How old is it? Lume patina and box says it has some age???

I have no personal experience with Solar Seikos but from an EE perspective I expect there to be a functional lifespan.
I have a seiko kinetic. Theoretically long lifespan as it is a weird hybrid mechanical/electrical (rotor spins generator). In practice, less than a decade before it completely crapped the bed. I haven't bothered to pull it apart to see if I can fix it. The movement doesn't look friendly to troubleshoot. Citizen has been making solar watches for decades, they are probably a good reference for potential lifespan.

Probably 2021. I have no idea how the pillow took such a beating. SNE577P1

My grandfather brought this to Canada on about 1900. No idea how old it was when he brought it here from England. I never run it. It's very noisy and plays "Bicycle built for two" on the hour.

The faceplate shows it as a Junghans. I would have originally guessed it was about 1899 but the playing of Daisy Bell (the actual title of the song) makes me think it is not the original movement or is much later than 1900. Since the song was composed in 1892 (first recorded in 1893) it would have been years before it would have been incorporated into a clock movement.

Someone paid a lot of money to have it custom made !!

I would love to hear how it sounds.

Thanks for the info.

$400 seems reasonable to me. My concern on the lume is unfounded as that is how they came new (yellow lume to give a vintage look), it is a recent model.

A slightly different beast, but I also recommend checking out Orient (owned by Seiko Group) for anyone looking for a good value dive watch (or any watch). new and improved models are called Kanno.

I'm sure you have looked into your clock, but if not, I found this.
