The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

My FIL drunken girlfriend used to pull chains and turn hands without letting the chimes catch up to the time . It’s completely out of phase . It goes ding dong but rather randomly

That would explain why the left weight looks to be pulled up too high and the right is 'off balance'. If you feel like taking the time, the first thing to do would be to get the left and right weights lowered. Its easiest to do this from the back, hopefully there is a drop down panel for access. If not you can either remove the whole back panel or do it from under the movement. Remove the weights and use some kind of hook to lift the chain off the wheel and pull it down so the weight is about a foot lower. Once you have done that make sure you have the weights on the proper chains. Hopefully the weights are marked on the bottom with L (left), C (centre) and R (right). R goes on the right as you face the clock. If they arent marked, the heaviest goes on the right, lightest on the left and middle in the middle. This is important to have the chimes/gong work properly. The middle is time and will generally work no matter what weight is on there but the chimes wont unless they have the correct weight.

Once you have done all that its time to get the chimes working in sync. Some movements are self-correcting but will take a couple of hours to do it. You will know if you have one if you move the minute hand to each quarter hour and listen to the chimes. If on one of the quarter hours it doesnt do anything then it is about the self correct. Keep moving the hand to each quarter hour and hopefully it corrects. Do this for 3 'hours' to ensure it has corrected itself.

If this doesnt work it is not self-correcting. If it does chime on each quarter hour, just not the 'correct' quarter hour chime you will need to remove the minute hand and put it to the corresponding chime. Just remove the nut and pull the hand off and put it in on the correct quarter hour. Run it through another hour to see if that worked. If so, the hour gongs will probably also be off. Simple move the hour hand to correspond to the hour gongs. You dont need to remove it, you can simply move it right hour.

All of this shouldnt take more than 15 mins. I know you dont like it but happy wife..........

I didnt notice a Silent switch on it (clock runs but the chimes dont unless you want them to). If you do get it running again let me know and I can tell you an easy fix to silence the chimes and gong when you want to.

Probably should have done this in a PM since I doubt others care

I think it’s awesome you can basically walk someone through it from a few photos.

Good job!

Another way to acquire too many clocks. "I cant be bothered with all that, if you want it, take it". So I did. :)

The weights are marked , I’ll check it’s in the right place . It’s a pretty accessible movement so I can move chains with little yoga moves . It has a lever to disable chimes , doesn’t seem to matter location at this point . There is a choice of 12 ? Different chime combos . It’s a modern clock as far as that goes , maybe 60 yrs old . Colonial clock co from Waterloo , I’ll dig into it following your schedule and see what happens .

Although he spent his life as a Lt Comdr in the navy, my FIL was a trained watch and clock maker , as his father was, they owned a jewelry and watch store in Stratford . This clock was completely dismantled every Christmas and cleaned and oiled, then calibrated. Once Pops got the new drunk for a girlfriend, everything went to shite. They moved to Fla and the clock was abandoned for a decade or two . And now it’s here ….

All this watch talk helped Facebook litter my feed with watches…and some monthly watch club…

Mensfashionforward.com or something
A new POS delivered to your house every month. Hurray. Oh, if you want automatics, it's $300 a month. If you want brands you've heard of, at least double that. That's a lot of money lit on fire.

Watchbox is a great subscription for a watch a month at 30.00 for 3.00 of Asian crap .

Canadian watch exchange on Facebook is a good place to see Canadian ‘values’ and learn a bit about directions the market is headed . And see some interesting watches .

Interesting. I've never heard of them before. Website is a huge wank (stories of childhood, camp x and lacrosse). Congrats to your family member.

Neither have I. I owned this one for a few years. Regret selling it.

That looks very similar to my buddy's at work. I'll see him tomorrow and see if he's wearing it.

Still waiting to be allowed in...they must be on this thread and saw my humble watches, and deemed me unworthy of joining.

N/M...these guys added me in right away. It's the Canadian Watch Club that are not allowing me to enter.

This is the modern re-issue version.

The original Hamilton Ventura (1957 I think??) was the first regular production electric watch. This one sticks to the mid century modern design of the original...
I know enough to recognize some models but not nearly enough to be able to determine year without further information (obviously as I can't tell reissue from vintage without help).
