The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

I'd take that over a fake pepsi in a heartbeat. Similar style but not pretending to be something it isn't. Quartz watches interest me very little though. Good to see timex bringing out more interesting watches.
Some versions of the Orient Kanno and other divers gets you something very similar (but not GMT AFAIK) in Automatic for about the same price. Another great legit option.

For what you have wasted on counterfeits you likely could have just bought the Lunar Pilot which is a great watch and a great value IMO. This is what makes many here sad for you.

Other than that, again. It seems you are upset for being called out buying illegal counterfeit goods and not getting a pat on the back for your CSB, followed by the list of usual lame excuses for buying counterfeits. I am pointing out illegal behaviour and what it does to personal credibility... and this hobby in general (plus many others).

I don't have a specific brand, but yes someone coming here pissing on this "expensive hobby" while claiming to be spending "Big Money, just buy once" in another is a total dichotomy. If its cool and I like it I buy it, a low price is not a factor. You should see my DMs BTW, lol. And of course this hobby can be both expensive and inexpensive, just comes down to what one collects. That Lunar Pilot could be a just buy once....

If you like the look and feel of the Panerai there are lots of options instead of a counterfeit, we can point you in the right direction and give you some great options, I encourage it.

In the meantime I encourage you to put it to bed by taking @GreyGhost suggestion, post up a video or pic of you blowing away your counterfeits with the Baretta, if its real of course :).

Most were gifts. Nothing wasted at all. The lunar pilot is an ugly watch to me so no, I wouldn’t buy it but it has a cool history and a decent price which is why I mentioned it.

Again, you seem way more animated about this than most. I usually see that with people that care more about how they are perceived by others, so some advice…don’t get so wound up. Ha ha..see what I did there?

I spent money on something that if it doesn’t perform well can explode in my face, you spend yours on something that tells the time equally as well as a quartz watch. I can’t really help you if you don’t see a difference (but I do understand the allure of collecting things and that has a value only to the collector).

lol, I was just appointed via DM to take this one up by the crowd, happens on the Internet and GTAM if you have not figured that one out yet... the excuses you posted were fun. wound up, nice pun BTW, good one.

BUT, seriously, no need to buy illegal counterfeit stuff (anything) or "get gifted it", specially no need to own it/wear it.... most importantly no need to have friends smuggle it into the country for you from Asia....

I avoided these headaches by purposefully buying realistic fakes for a while. Whenever anyone went on holiday to Asia I'd ask them to bring me back a fake brand watch. Went to a snooty festival once in TO with a fake TAG Heuer on and some sleazy salesman said "oh I see you're a TAG man eh?", looked puzzled when I told him it was just a $50 fake.

Anyways, we are all here to help, if you have something you like we can point you in the right direction to get something legit in the same style instead of counterfeit, usually lots of options. May be quartz, if you want mechanical there are options there too. If it is not the Lunar Pilot, what else do you like? It may not say highfalutin "Tag Heuer" on the dial but it will be legit. There is no need to be fake in life and get judged by sleazy salesman lol. Don't like watches at all, why even be in the thread????

Also a gun owner BTW (why I am subscribed and know about the other thread), but obviously not doing it in as manly a way where my hobby may explode in my face.

Finally, we really do want to see you shoot these $50 counterfeit abominations to destroy them--REALLY! It will be fun and entertaining. Come on, do it!!!! Shoot'em up! Either thread!

This is taking a weird turn. I’m glad you’re getting DM’s, maybe you can chat about them in your next playground break with the gang. It’s good to be passionate about a hobby! Bravo!

Do you want the last…
No, you fully 100% get the last word by posting the shooting/blasting or otherwise destroying those illegal counterfeit abominations.

Again, we are all glad to help here if there is a style watch you like but on a fixed budget. Lots of options and the hunt for the right one is a lot of fun for many. Just let us know what you are interested in, not joking here, lots of knowledge in this thread. What do you think is cool that we can help find an alternative? Is it the Panerai?

I vote let it go. Your both fine and while entertaining your F'ing up a potentially good thread.

Now for a classic thread derail , I shot 3 rounds of Skeet this morning , in 25km wind with wet snow everywhere , and shot just as poorly as a sunny day in May. Yes i used a genuine 725 o/u sporting, and I had two miss fires in 75 shells , bit weak firing pin on lower barrel, I suspect there is some goo in there

Back on track.... Never really noticed until today how much these two are alike... (both on my desk).

1970s, of course on one hand they are fairly generic TV dials, on the other hand....
It took timex quite a while but even they figured out a watch that you owned the tooling on for 60 yrs , even if the tooling now sits 300kms west of DingBangBow. Once its dusted off and you hit the nastalgia switch a Marlin waterproof is now $99.00. Cost to manufacture ? about $3.29, I'm shocked at the bounce back Timex is enjoying

So we are sitting last year at the Hamilton Golf Club , staring out the leaded glass windows at the reshaped 18th ahead of the Canadian open. A fellow at our table , retired from owning a jewelry store was explaining about how the time price you wore said something about you as an individual. He shows us his Richard Mille , says to my boss Jim ( a legitimate millionaire) what are you wearing ? Jim says a Time . They guys says a Timex ? Jim says no a Time , guys says what are you on about ? Jim says it came free with my Time magazine subscription, it says Time on the dial over the digital numbers . So there is that .

@jc100 , if you like the look of a Panerai , take a gander at Panzera , it’s an Australian company making a very similar case and face , they use Japanese automatic movements , which feel a bit agricultural once you’ve handled better , but they tell time , and the Aus dollar sucks so about $250 all in .

you know whats worse then a replica knock off?

companies that make "similar looking watches, with similar names" Panerai Panzera?

If I were Panerai, I'd sue.

BTW, nothing wrong with G-Shocks, they make some pretty cool stuff. (full disclosure I own several)

Panzera is the guys last name , I sue for that also .

Timex is making a fantastic comeback and they are on trend with the back catalogue these days.

But to be clear, in the watch the one on the left is an Omega....right is Timex :)

Panerai is an interesting one and a good challenge finding a cheap alternative (if anyone is interested....). Their lawyers have been pretty successful defending the "brand identity" in the past even after patents (like the crown) must have long expired. The Radiomir line has a lot of legit homages as it is a little more generic but the Luminor less so due to the crown design.

There were some from "Parnis" (a sort of brand) but Panerai got them to stop AFAIK. Peugeot Sport has some on Amazon at the moment, quartz. There were ones being marketed as Marina Militare with Chinese Unitas 6497 clones (patents are expired so there are lots of copies of the calibre) for a while but when I saw one in person I noticed it had OP markings in places, so counterfeiters were producing that one I had in my hand (not a surprise). Also some sterile dial ones, but again some are bad actor sources others are just cheap Seagull movements and no OP markings. Likely many other options, I have not done a deep dive.

In general it is a brand in some trouble because the giant watch fad is all but dead and that is all they make (they are downsizing some models). They road it up, and now back down again. I expect the used market (and maybe new) to drop for the genuine article. 37mm is the new 47mm, so to speak.

I am not a G-Shock guy but they are fantastic, and tough watches. Very cool, just not my mojo. Great buy/value IMO.

Size for Panerai wasn't fashion (I'm sure your aware) It's there DNA. Having said that, its in business to make money. They have models that are 38 - 40 - 42 mm. IMHO a Panerai should be large. My wrists are an average 6 3/4. I can pull off a 47mm. Wider, some what flat wrist helps. I own a 372. A classic Panerai that wouldn't be the same if only 42mm.
