The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

Indeed it does suck to be him, Rolex is possibly the most faked watch on the planet, the ones you will pay $3-500 cdn for in China are able to fool jewelers unless the open them up and do a serial number check, they are that good. You really need to do your own due diligence and if its a first time buy in the thousands you better vet the guy. If they arent known in the watch community ( its sort of that tight) and wont meet you at a Rolex dealer, walk away.

Just had a nice chat with our in house watch guy at work. My red watch caught his eye and he explained to me the fakes, what movements to look for, and how some companies have their own in house movements and some outsource.

This topic is a rabbit hole!

Love your red color, but for myself I picked a metal green one, this picture doesn't do this watch justice - must see this dial in the direct sun rays!

Sucks to be him.

I've watched some YouTube videos on this. There are some very convincing fakes out there. The fakers are getting better at their craft. Beware!
It just goes to show it is not a victimless crime... The entire box and papers thing is making it even worse these days. It used to be a red flag for anything fairly new, no box, papers and warranty, why would you not have them on a few year old $10K+++ watch (ie stolen or counterfeit), so now they covered that. Hurts sellers of legit ones and buyers of course like this guy.

I am not a Rolex expert and it is a low resolution picture but a couple of things jump out at me. The writing on the dial is off, it does not pop like I would expect (too low res to see how crisp it is). The fluted bezel looks like it is stainless vs white gold (based on contrast to the rest of the case). The average person that has not seen many in person would likely not pick up on those things (and it is based on just looking at the low res picture) and of course the scammers may send pics of the real one (sometimes just grabbed off of the net from a random) to the buyer and then send the fake so hindsight is always 20-20. That last part is why a buyer should ask to see pictures with a specific time.

In the end you always buy the seller, not the watch.

I looked up the Heuer Monaco recently and someone was selling a NOS with no box or papers. Quite disappointing when you pay a big premium for a NOS watch that you can never wear (or that premium will disappear) and it isn't a complete set. The trailer queen needs to have the whole package.

Very nice! Which model is that! I took the red because my colours are typically grey, blue, dark, etc. So wife said I need more colour.

Got a lime green vest, bright red Converse sneakers, and now a bright red watch!

Colors variety is not a problem if you are a fan of G-shock :)
I get my pieces from G-Shock Canada. They have sales 2-3 times a year, trending models usually sales out so worth waiting for 3-4th restock. just sign up for their newsletter to be notified about sales and new releases.

Green metal model:

This one was the most popular due addition of Solar and Bluetooth and very nice summer color adn positive display :)

Nice thanks! I like that yellow one!

I was more gripped by this thread when you guys were scrapping over counterfeits.
Speaking of...my buddy just bought a nice IWC(?) watch a week ago. And as he was concerned it was a fake (with receipt and box and all) he ended up going with the seller to the store of origin, and they confirmed everything down to serial number on receipt and the watch.

So he got a $1700 watch for $900.

If you like dive watches under $500 these are apparently a decent buy with favourable reviews Deep Blue Dive Watches

That's a pretty good deal at the sub $500 price point for a dive watch with a Swiss Automatic movement, at their list prices it gets a little more questionable as many options open up.

I know that Sellita (used in some of the higher models) was having some teething problems early with the 200 which is a copy (patents are expired) of the ETA 2824 family. AFAIK that has been sorted. Many companies are switching to Sellita as ETA calibres are more expensive and hard to get. For example, Marathon switched the SARs to Sellita and they are double+ in cost of these at the listed discounted prices!

I posted this in another thread but this is the official thread so here it is again. This is an amazing read about building the first accurate chronometers. It's astounding how long they thought that the answer was in the astronomy.
I have the DVD of the Granada film that was made based on the book. Stars Jeremy Irons and Michael Gambon. Very good film and interesting story.

I have the coffee table book about the history of the marine chronometer that lead to calculating longitude . Its great if you need a sleep aid. The movie was pretty good , I think at one point the BBC did a mini series.

Just finished reading different article about the restoration of the two original chronometers that have been sitting in the museum at Grenwich for a couple hundred years , largely ignored and allowed to just seize up.

I’m not sure I’ve seen an IWC at that low a price point , good for your buddy I think

Neither have I. I owned this one for a few years. Regret selling it.

I looked at them initially as you can get a tritium tube lume watch that’s cheaper than a luminox and looks to be built better and isn’t resin.
I almost bought a Luminox in Japan but decided on a Traser instead. Quartz but at the time an alarm was important to me (pre carrying cell phone) and a mechanical alarm watch will likely never be in the budget. Lume is getting a little dull on this one.
