The Official Ongoing Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding areas thread

Re: The Official Ongoing Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding areas thread.

Has anybody seen the brine or salt trucks out yet today? With the forecast temperature drop tonight and all the wet roads I'm fully expecting those bastards to dump as much crap as they can to meet their quota...

Haven't seen or noticed any yet. If and when they do spray I can usually tell on my way home from Guelph, but nothing today.

Just drove from Milton to Kitchener and nothing on the 401.

I saw a plow between Guelph and Eramosa today. It didn't appear to be spraying or salting when I saw it. Hopefully, he was driving it for an oil change at the garage ;), but who knows. I've seen none of that in KW so far :).

i have a morgan sync tool if you need to borrow it. I'm located in fergus

Good, I didn't see any evidence of salting either. Hopefully they didn't do it over night.

Nick, that's a pretty fancy looking tool!

Hopefully this is the last of old man winter. I REALLY want to pull my bike out this weekend.

So I guess we should tentatively set up a ride, eh?

How about we meet at Tim Horton's at Ottawa and Fischer-Hallman at about 2:00 on Sunday? That should give enough time for the temps to get up to comfortable. Don't forget daylight savings Sunday morning!

Sweet!!! Going to take the girl for a quick ride in the morning then hopefully I can break free for the meet up :)

There was some salt on the roads this morning, but they were back roads. I will have to get the bike up and running and see if I can make it out Sunday.

I'm game for a short ride,

and just to answer some of the previous posts:

1.) I do valve checks myself, I don't trust a shop to do it correctly, its a fairly straight forward process and a good learning experience on how to take your head off if you've never done it before, just get the service manual. Feeler guages are cheap. Make sure you do not get any dirt in there, so have a protected place to do it.

2.) Brake fluid really depends on what kind of riding you do. IMO, use dot 4, not dot 5.1. 5.1 is usually slated as a racing fluid with a higher boiling point, but it is more spongy than dot 4 and lacks feel. Unless your getting your brakes really hot (i.e. at the track), just get regular dot 4. If your racing, talk to tony @ bluestreak and consider some motul 660, about $30/qt I think.

Ya if the temps go up like they are forecasting 0 for tomorrow. Shouldn't take long to dry up Sunday. Most cities try not to salt late in the season bc they'd rather not spend the money, environmental effects etc. they'll do the high risk roads but minimal usually.

I'm an optimistic and if this sun fights through like it is then shouldn't take long :)

saw salt trucks out in full force this morning on back roads on my way to work.

Anyone know were I can new fasteners for my track bike?

Brafasco in Waterloo on Bridge at Northfield. If you want the blingy stuff Kurveygurl or Bluestreak.

I think the OP has a Katana?

I have a Bandit 600, which is very very similar, and have done my own valve job.

It's a bit of a PITA, but not impossible. You do need more than a service manual; you also need some sealant (I used Threebond 1194), a special valve adjustment tool (I bought one and have an extra, but you can also also make one from a Robertson #1 screw and a dowel), and probably a spare signal generator cover gasket (I broke this gasket, and just used the Threebond to seal this off too.) A torque wrench would be good too.

The procedure on a Bandit/Katana/old Gixxer is easy. Rotate the engine so the cam isn't touching the follower, then check clearance. If it's out, use the tool, and loosen the locknut, and adjust until you get the right clearance and tighten back up the locknut.

Bad/noisy valves can sometimes just be a carb sync issue. But speaking from experience, the Bandit 6 has really frequent adjustment intervals, I think every 6000-7000 kms.

If you're interested, let me know and I could lend the valve adjust tool.

Would love to ride on Sunday but have an engagement. Will keep my eyes out for the next group ride.
