The Official Ongoing Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding areas thread

<meh> Salt trucks were doing cedar hill in Kitchener this morning. So it appears that only high-risk city and back-roads were done. </meh> The same salter was not dropping any on Courtland Ave. Just a heads-up 8)

my old ninja 500 was easy, just watch the torque on the head bolts. The 08 CBR 1k is not bad. The only hard part is snaking the head cover through the frame, you have to move/twist it just right to get it out. Getting it back in without the gasket moving was the real challenge. There is literally 2 mm of clearance, otherwise the rest isn't that bad. Once the covers off the actual measurements are only 5 minutes. If you have adjustable valves, while a PITA, at least you don't have to buy shims @ insane prices. For the Honda 30,000km, all within 50% tolerance, except one which was right at the limit on the loose side, but still within spec.

Either way I still think at least if you do it your self you know 100% it was done right, but to each their own.

I think the OP has a Katana?

I have a Bandit 600, which is very very similar, and have done my own valve job.

It's a bit of a PITA, but not impossible. You do need more than a service manual; you also need some sealant (I used Threebond 1194), a special valve adjustment tool (I bought one and have an extra, but you can also also make one from a Robertson #1 screw and a dowel), and probably a spare signal generator cover gasket (I broke this gasket, and just used the Threebond to seal this off too.) A torque wrench would be good too.

The procedure on a Bandit/Katana/old Gixxer is easy. Rotate the engine so the cam isn't touching the follower, then check clearance. If it's out, use the tool, and loosen the locknut, and adjust until you get the right clearance and tighten back up the locknut.

Bad/noisy valves can sometimes just be a carb sync issue. But speaking from experience, the Bandit 6 has really frequent adjustment intervals, I think every 6000-7000 kms.

If you're interested, let me know and I could lend the valve adjust tool.

Would love to ride on Sunday but have an engagement. Will keep my eyes out for the next group ride.

Im actually looking for some new screws and backings (welded clip nut, and rubber grommet with nut) for my track bike

I prefer to get those quick release screws. They only require one turn and no tools, it has a hoop.

Curvey girl is the cheapest place (even after shipping) you are looking for DZUS fasteners. Blue Streak carries them in Embro but is a little more expensive.

So who's up for that ride tomorrow then?
For me, it depends on the weather. Never got the rain we were hoping for today, so there's still salt on the roads. Will be a "game time" decision for me I think.
Will have to hook up the hose for a solid wash if I do end up going out.

Going out for a quick one to try my new lid.Not sure when.

Steve. Is that 2:00 at Ottawa and F Hallman?

I was out around the same time as you folks, but couldn't make it for 2PM. Ended up riding to Cambridge and back on backroads.

Beautiful day out today, saw lots of different bikes and riders out.

See you guys another day.

couldn't make it for 2, but we'll find another nice day, got a full season ahead of us

We waited at Tim Horton's until about 2:20, then headed south.

Hey Dave, Tim and Bek, what the heck happened to you guys? Don't like riding with me and Steve? We turned onto the highway to jog over to Norte Dame and you guys kept going on Ira Needles! Nobody said they had a curfew...

Was able to get out earlier today, but had surprise company over in the afternoon.

Anyone got some scrap wood? Enough to build a ramp for my work shed??

Hey Dave...
Yeah, sorry about that.. i thought Beck (Duality) was continuing on and was going to let you know... Dave and I peeled out at the 7/8 exit...

Spent 2 hours cleaning salt and all that crap off of Babs.

No prob. That was my first time actually riding on Alps road by the 401. I've seen it many many times but was always going somewhere else at the time. When I noticed that it came out on Spragues Rd that was perfect. Turned around and hit it.

I really need to get a mirror solution on my crazy frankenbike. Haha...

Yeah, I didn't see exactly what happened, just saw a bike in my mirror as I was getting onto the ramp and thought it was everyone. Steve and I managed to find the saltiest roads possible. haha

2 hours?? Man, I spent 20 minutes and thought that was overboard. You must love your bike more than I do. :) actually I didn't have much salt on mine at all.
