The Official Election Thread

so how do we attract guy/gal that's been successful in private life and may have had a real job to A; take the pay cut to be PM, B; won't just help shovel into the war chests of his private sector buddies. ?

A bit of a tangent, but relating to the NDP's dependence on the French:

The NDP was more-or-less elected in the last election by Québec, and in Québec the federal election is held as far less important then their Provincial one. The NDP became the official opposition party really as a joke -- Québec just wanted to collectively "poke a needle in the eye" of the rest of Canada, they thought Layton (the previous leader) looked harmless enough -- and voilà. Québec is also the most socialist province in Canada, and you help pay for their programs.

A large number of the NDP candidates in Québec were scrounged-up in a hurry, because at that time parties received a subsidy for every vote they received, so the NDP figured that it was good for their party income to run someone, anyone, in every riding. Bizarrely, many of these stand-in candidates actually identified themselves as separatist (you know, wanting Québec to leave Canada).

If you remember, a number of winning NDP candidates had never stepped foot in the ridings in which they were elected, the people who voted for them had no flipping idea who they were, and one was actually away on holiday in Las Vegas, or somewhere, and had to be tracked down to be told they were elected.

To the young people first paying attention to politics, don't be fooled into thinking that the NDP is a serious party, on the footings of the Liberals or Conservatives. It has what standing it does because of a joke played by Quebec on the the rest of Canada.

The NDP is a sneaky party, by and for unions, and if you read this thread you will see how the union types hide their true interest in voting (and tricking you into voting) for these socialists.

I believe Mulcair has said that he would renounce his French citizenship IF ELECTED PM - how very nice if him.

Imo I find the NDP the most honest party of the bunch. They proudly stand for the blue collar/working class.

Problem is, they do so while alienating the middle to upper classes as greedy. You know, doctors and lawyers and pharmacist, CFOs, etc. folks that own their own businesses and employ people and pay a lot in taxes. They vote too and it's one of the reasons the NDP in general was regulated to third in most elections.

It's a great concept to take care of everyone. Just as long as someone else pays for it.

What I find interesting is how much of the working middle class blames and hates the impoverished class as being freeloaders, when the super wealthy and corporations that use loopholes and off shore banking to avoid paying their fair share of taxes and demand government subsidies, are the ones that are siphoning off far more money from our society than the poor. The rich good old boys are able to get away from this because they bought conservative/republican politicians with lobbying and election contributions.

Sssh....it will only blow their minds if they look at the dollar amounts for each case.

you are wrong from the first word to the last word of this post. What basis do you have for any of these points? Most intelligent successful people blame government waste more than anything .
Just come and sit with me and go over my personal and corporate tax returns. I would love loopholes etc to avoid the tax but the sad reality is there really aren't any "legal" ones. Please don't tell me to switch accounting firms either because I have used the large international firms and local people so I know what can be done and what can't. And the government of Canada has been actively going after people with offshore and other tax shelters for many years now.
Only way to avoid tax is to lie and hope you don't get audited and that is a game I will not play, but many people of low and high income do.

This may be a blow to your ego Sonny: you're just not rich enough. Someone once asked (name escapes me, he's a huge silver investor in the U.S.) about paying taxes, he just laughed and said, "tax is something my secretary pays."

edit added: Warren Buffet

Assuming how much I earn/have ? Do you know or are you guessing . Because based on your statement you have no idea. My income places me in the less than 1 percent of the worlds population. Many many many many earn more but far more earn less. So I speak from a position of knowledge. You don't. Think I'm talking BS message me and I will show you my tax return at my office.
Are we in the U.S.? and that comment was in regards to dividends and the tax rate being lower not that he didn't pay any tax and it was warren Buffett. He didn't laugh he was pointing out the inequity of tax rates however he failed to point out if he took his income as salary he would be paying a higher percentage than his secretary.Quote facts not your dreams please. Here is what is wrong with the world, know it alls like you quoting things they thought they heard or know instead of believing or discussing facts.
and P.S no wealthy person is going on record and laughing that they pay no taxes , that would be like begging for an audit and telling CRA or the IRS to go F themselves at the same time.
edit I plugged my income into a wealth calculator website based on world salaries and confirmed.

Just a few days ago the NDP said they that they are going to raise the tax rate on corporations -- but in the next statement said that they are going to help small business. This is so absurd: most corporations in Canada are small businesses. The NDP paints a picture of the evil corporation, but in reality that really is the guys painting your tank, fixing your bike, or doing your safety -- all pretty evil folks that need to pay more according to the NDP.

The problem with corporate tax isn't so much the rate as the threshold . If you have less than 500,000 in profit you pay approximately 11.5 percent. Anything over 500,000 and you pay pretty much half on everything from dollar one.

Good point.

Its hard to take their arguments seriously when their arguments are self serving

They most certainly dont represent me! Im insulted by that idea.

They represent the Unions whos pockets they are in. Nothing more, nothing else. Please dont equate Unions with blue collar workers.

Sonny quoted rocker guy so I can read his post: isn't everyone's argument self serving in the sense that they argue for what they believe in? Why would anyone do differently?

This is is why he is ignored.

It happened again today. I bought oatmeal. Something seemed fishy. Yup, the bag is now 900grams. Same price. Last batch I bought was 1000grams. That's a corporate strategy. A normal business owner would raise price to cover cost. But corporate effs you right to your face behind your back. Must have multiple degrees to come up with that. We'll all be buying whorederv size portions at big and tall prices soon thanks to pleasuring of shareholders. Damn conservatives.

I disagree. Exxon, Shell, etc are not small businesses. Your bias makes you blind.

do you think these are small businesses?

compared to the guy that owns the independent auto garage or dry cleaners.

Dont argue what you believe in if it's made up and has no facts. As above I proved you are spitting emotion and not facts. How you feel doesn't matter it's what is the truth. Like it or not.

only because you can't take the truth. The people won't accept a price increase even if it's warranted but they generally won't go home and weigh the bag or check that the last one was more grams. The public especially Canadian public screwed themselves by attacking and hating profit. Same thing as our government, if someone stood up and told the truth they would never be elected, so they lie to you to tell you what you want to hear, then when elected they do what they want. Canadians don't like the truth, it's too aggressive.

I may have been wrong on your income, (props to you) but I'm not making up the fact that large corporations avoid paying taxes by using tax shelters, which are not available to the working class.

these shelters/loopholes exist because politicians writing the rules are bought by lobbyists and campaign contributions.
