The Official Election Thread

Anyone that has had a real job before and promises not to raise tax and mind their own business would get my vote. Preferably with no party allegiance. But just once. They get one term to get their SJW kicks and then they are gone. Bye bye, thanks for your "service". Next please. I don't need to be governed. Most people shouldn't. Laws exist. Right now. And in the past. I don't think society would fall apart because a bunch of busy-bodies don't meet periodically and impose more red tape and tax on the untermensch.

Good luck with finding anyone willing.

And assuming there would be a viable and good candidate, good luck finding like minded people such as yourself to get them elected.

So how do we deal with reality? How does this country get the government it wants and deserves? With reasonable expectations.

I mean, if we could elect a good government, why would we want to replace them with someone else?

The presumption is once they get elected, they get corrupt with the power and benefits of the roll?

Seems to me, we don't have the patience or time or desire to put in the effort ourselves. We rather sit back and complain and hope that something better comes along.

I need to get out on the bike for some therapy. Lol.

We played with 'that's a lie'. Got a good buzz

Voting for socialism (NDP) is conceding that you can't take care of yourself or your family -- not the type of weak minded attitude I would we expect from riders.

More like I can't plan for the future & need handouts to make it in life

FWIW the population of Norway is approx 5 million, Denmark (my ancestry) approx 5.6 million. These countries each have approximately the population of the GTA. It's a whole lot easier to make things work in a small population (and relatively small land area) than in a big and diverse population with an enormous land area. Sweden is bigger, but still only about 9.5 million - basically like Ontario but contained in a whole lot less land area.

Vast natural resources have funded Norway. YES they have managed it well. It's still other people's money ... from those who have bought and paid for those resources that Norway exported ...

For an example of what happens when you don't have large supplies of other people's money, see France. Or Greece. Or Spain. All countries that I would love to visit, but wouldn't want to live there.

Dude, you cant bring up those countries!! Only specific, very unique resource wealthy countries where Socialism has succeeded!!

Screw the 90% of the countries where socialism has brought nothing but wealth distribution from the middle class to the ruling class.

Raise your hands if you lived in an actual Socialist country? Notice the number of Polish, Ukranian, Russian, well Eastern European actually immigrant coming to Canada. My god, Socialism is so great they cant get away from it fast enough!

Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand are all great countries built on the Conservative models and people flock to them because of those values. Not because they are great Socialist states, but they are still places where you arent regulated and choked to death. Where entrepeurial spirit is still rewarded. Cant have that under the Socialist system. Only the state-owned entities are allowed.
Where you can actually succeed if you work hard. Socialism wants to make everyone equals. Wanna see Socialism in action? Just look at Unions and the type of mentality they breed. Where everyone is equal and working hard is frowned upon because you make other slackers look bad.

Do you agree with how Liberals are running Ontario? Do you agree with the scandals and how they were dealt with? Do you want the same type of oversight and lack of accountability on a federal level? I sure as hell dont.

France...one of the best health care systems in the world and an amazing country to live in, I did for nearly 4 years in total. Very hard working people, a great attitude to life, wonderful culture (ie, they actually have some). You also forgot Germany though...who managed to supply more than 70% of their countries energy with sustainable energy only a week or so ago...due to having some foresight, investment in technology, avoidance of over reliance on one single resource and a socialist attitude towards quite a few things. Pretty strong economy too.

Greece is an odd country. They still have active marxist and communist party involvement and this goes way back. There's a culture of avoiding paying taxes, nepotism in job matters and general corruption in politics.

Spain also did badly but again only last week their tourism markets were reported as rebounding back to pre-trouble figures with the concurrent injection of cash that brings. I have friends that live in Spain, even with the troubles they love the country and can see some light at the end of the tunnel.

Also...you keep harping on about other peoples money which makes a great tag line but doesn't really mean anything. Banks wouldn't exist without other people's money and nor would many other institutions, organizations and even some countries would be irrelevant without it (hello Switzerland). It's how that money is managed that matters and some socially leaning countries do it better than others (like some banks) and many are at the top of the list of the best places to live in the world for a reason.

You people spitting feathers about the evils of socialist countries have watched too many Cold War films and need to get out more.

What if you genuinely can't, through no reason of your own, take care of your family?

France may have a good health-care system but their economy as a whole is in rough shape.

I intentionally didn't include Germany. I don't consider it to be all that "socialist".

France has a nice health care system, compared to the world market so does Canada.
I travel a bit and have been through socialist countries, eastern block and a couple communist countries. I'm there largely as a tourist, sometimes for work and most people that I speak with, those allowed to speak openly really like the idea of living in North America. I'm not in favor of making socialism work here because I'm on the wrong side of the corporate fence to want that in my back yard. I like work hard get paid, not work hard get paid same as Fred over there napping.
Justin would lean towards liberal provinces, and Wynn is enough of a dufus without federal backing to be a dufus.

There's some awfully stupid comments and blanket statements being thrown around about socialism.

About what I'd expect from people here. But Brian, I'm a little surprised by you.

You collectively will get the government you deserve.

And or economy isn't? The most ironic part of this whole discussion is that there are some talking about how great Canada is and how bad socialism is. As if we have no socialist programs or ideals at all.

For those that have been the most vocal in there criticism of socialism, I think they should consider a different country to live in.

Do you know the quote, paraphrased as: There, but for the grace of God, walk I.

(replace "grace of God" with "blind luck", if you are an atheist)

Maybe an agreed upon definition of socialism would help the discussion?

Voting conservative is conceding many of your charter rights and freedoms under Bill C-51, letting the government have more control over you - not the type of weak minded attitude I would expect from riders.

As for conceding that you can't take care of yourself or your family, that's incorrect. It's more about living in a society where those who are doing well have the social conscience to help those, who through no fault of their own, like getting cancer for example, require help, rather than just letting them rot. Our socialist hegalth care system does this, and I'm very proud and happy for it.

Libertarianism is all about selfishness. I'm doing all right Jack, the rest of you can F off. Pure anti-social mindset.

What a bore the debate is. Elizabeth May and Harper look best. Mulcair is a phony smiling creep and Trudeau is a lispy phony wimp who can't stop saying uhh.

I felt like I was watching the Gong Show: the Movie, with 4 different but same versions of the Unknown Comic doing their routines simultaneously. Just missing Chuck Barris as the host/MC.

Seems to me that a libertarian, in his self interest in looking after only himself and his family, lacks a social conscience and important noble human emotions like compassion, altruism, and empathy towards fellow humans - a rather unevolved person. Lacking social responsibility, there is little chance of a libertarian ever being considered a great man who has done great things. A libertarian is instead, a small mean man, (in all of its definitions.)
