The Bad Riders of Ontario Thread

I've got an axe to grind.

I can appreciate the convenience of the e-bike movement and I respect the fact that people need an easy, affordable way to commute to and from work, appointments, etc. That said, these ************* like to just rip around, ignore all rules of the road and they're virtually anonymous while doing it because they are not required to register, plate, or be licensed in any way. The number of times I've nearly struck one, while driving the speed limit within my own damn lane is insane.

In addition, when they're not using the roads however they see fit they rip down the sidewalks presenting immediate danger to pedestrians everywhere they ride. I watched some ********* on an Emmo, with his phone in his hand nearly smoke a woman with stroller.

I hope e-bikes, and to some degree cyclists are going to be held to the same standard motor vehicles are expected to adhere to in the future, or else we'll continue to spiral downward into chaos.

....end rant.

Not quite the intent of this thread but close enough. Bicycle vs bicycle on waterfront trail. One cyclist in critical condition. One took off. Does a ftr charge require a motor vehicle?

A cyclist can get some decent speed coming down the hill on Lakeshore there.

Take it to the track they said. It's safer, they said.

Human failure. Ambulance driver? Flag men? Radio failure?

Registered and INSURED!!

An ebike rear-ended a parked car not far from me, doing about $3500 in damages; and the car owner was boned, as the eBike owner/operator didn't have insurance (or, to be honest, a pot to urinate in, so no point in suing)

How much does it cost to get a judgement against the guy? A judgement never goes away. A deadbeat friend had his CPP garnisheed. IIRC it was Visa.

To be honest the time chasing him would be more productively spent doing something more enjoyable but for someone who likes frying ants with a magnifying glass........

Repo his ebike

Black sportbike partially responsible for a 6 yo in hospital. Also, WTF GM. Body separating from frame?

Very hard to tell. Public conversation has effectively ceased while litigation gets underway and the parties start pointing fingers at each other. Roebling

A friend was riding down the DVP on Saturday - the usual stop and go traffic, all lanes busy.
At least half a dozen squids on obviously ungoverned e-bikes passed him doing the usual lane split, on the shoulder and other dumass moves. There are days I wish I was a cop...

My feeling is this.
If the mode of transportation you choose can reach the lowest posted speed limit in the Province you reside in.
You are required to have it registered and plated, insured and wear protective gear (Helmet) and follow traffic laws, failure to do so and if caught is an immediate seizure and possible destruction of property along with a traffic ticket to reflect the offence(s). If you have a valid license for a motor vehicle any offence will be reflected on your overall driving record. If you are under the legal license age, it goes against your parents or guardians record.

You wanna play, you gotta pay...

Reasonable but insurance on ebikes will instantly kill them (unless it is a provincial program with plate+insurance for something like $100 a year). Private insurance on ebikes will be in the ballpark of $1000/year and very very few people would do that. Now, if I could get LSM plates and insurance for $1000 a year on a sur-on, that could be really appealing to me.

Possible destruction? What? No rubber hose beating?

Destruction of legal vehicles makes zero sense (and by definition drives inflation as you are making goods more scarce). At least auction seized vehicles. Now, the immediate seizure if you break a law doesn't apply to normal motor vehicles so it shouldn't apply to e-anything either (unless they were not street-legal in which case they should be seized and only sprung by a mechanic that promises to bring into compliance or destroy).

Possible destruction of property, depends on the crime. Say where a death is involved for instance. I am also not talking about cars, trucks or motorcycles. This pertains more to the influx of e-bikes, scooters, etc.

Like with racism, I don't think we should treat them differently. Bring them under the same umbrella, assign the same penalties. Where the dinosaurs are burned should not affect the potential penalties nor licensing/insurance costs.

I've spoke about the eBike problem for years. Nothing is enforced - wheel size/weight/speed etc.
"What we allow will continue. What continues will escalate."

A child will be killed on a walking path from an eBike. Then the city might wake up.

This is your insurance companies responsibility in Ontario even if he had insurance.
