The Bad Riders of Ontario Thread

Here's an old one. Not sure if Ontario drivers are up to having two way bike lanes on one way streets.
The optics IMO:

The van driver is making a left turn from the left lane. This is something new because we don't typically get passed on the left when we are in the left most lane. The driver probably saw the oncoming bicycle but failed to check for the one passing him.

There will be more of these. Just because someone paints some lines and passes a law it doesn't mean everyone suddenly fully complies. Drivers will have to take on the mindset of a WWII fighter pilot, constantly scanning in all directions for incoming obstacles, including the ones that shouldn't be there. Don't listen to the radio or converse with passengers unless they are acting as observers as well. "Bicycle at 11 o'clock, pedestrian at nine o'clock and closing."

If drivers were retested to meet the WWII fighter pilot standards most would fail. What would that do to our already dismal public transit system?

What would that do to house prices beyond the fringes of the public transit system?

We have failed to integrate other means of transportation into our systems for a century. It is unrealistic to expect drivers to modify their patterns overnight.

Where are drivers made aware of the changes?

Drivers don't get updated handbooks. If they missed the change on the media because there was something more sensational going on they don't find out until they hit someone.

Ask Chow, Ford, Trudeau about it and they'll tell you it's not that bad and people will adapt. Right, when?

I was surprised at the massive changes in the driver's written test when I did my M1 decades later.

I also agree with you on the new stuff with regards to bicycles.
Making a left and having to look behind in the mirror, and then judge the speed of a bicycle is going to be beyond the capability of some drivers.
(Objects may be closer than they appear).

Due to speeding, object may appear sooner than expected.

While the driver looks to the left a texting pedestrian jay walks from the right.

Cannon St. in Hamilton, but in Ottawa.

Saw 3, 50 something year old white hair riders in a group of 10 this morning on Harley's on Hamilton mountain not wearing a helmet cruising down the road (Ontario plates)....Is something new, to identify as a Sikh or something? I was prepared to see Florida plates or similar and pleading ignorance..but no.

Sikh has been allowed to ride without helmets in Ontario for more than a decade.

I think this has been tested in court, and some say they got no tickets from not wearing a helmet

A few states have no helmet law.

I am not 100% sure and I am certainly not about to change my own behaviour in order to test it, but I don't think the police are allowed to ask the questions that they would have to ask in order to establish if a rider is Sikh or not.

I'm having trouble finding the actual law. There was a proposed amendment to hta in 2016 but it died. Douggie said an exemption was coming in force in October 2018 but I don't see it. There were issues/protests about amending safety laws to address religion as well as insurance companies wondering about changing rates based on declared helmet usage.

Definitely no helmet is not for me.

It’s just another layer of protection that I’m quite comfortable with wearing

Yes I know that but without being racist these men were not traditional Sikh looking. White middle aged men on Harleys. Maybe better to not ask questions as it's 2023 and can identify as you wish.

Therein lies the problem. An exemption was made to carve out a specific group, but it can't be enforced that way without invoking accusations of discrimination.
The wording of the proposed law could allow room. It required unshorn hair and a turban. They aren't questioning your religion, they are challenging your haircut.

Anyone have any more info? Was this a ride the 6ix or 1% or ???

By the end of the traffic stop, the police:

However, there were more tickets forthcoming, including:

• Driving a motor vehicle with no plates
• Obstructed plate
• Using a plate not authorized for vehicle
• Driving a motor vehicle with no valid permit
• Driver failing to surrender a licence
• Driving a motor vehicle with an improper licence
• Owner operating a motor vehicle without insurance
• Failing to surrender an insurance card"
